My Hogan Precisions

Recommended Posts

Just thought that I'd post a few pics of my Hogan Precisions. This set is 2 - Equalizer and was refinished by the previous owner at The Iron Factory. I bought them as heads only and put a set of KBS Tour V X-flex shafts in them (straight in). I built the 5-iron to play at 37.5" and 32' with 1/2"/4' steps between clubs. This makes them exactly 1 club "weaker" than my 1957's (thus, my Hogan 7-iron is roughly the same as my Miura 8-iron). Yes, I am aware that these are the "incorrect" ferrules, I just used the "closest fit" of what I had on hand at the time (besides, I really like the black/red striped ferrules).

I took the 7-iron out to hit a few balls with last week but simply can not wait to get them on the course. I absolutely loved what I was getting out of the 7-iron and believe that I just might have a set that could see regular course use rather than being a "novelty wall hanger" set of irons.

Anyway, here are a couple of pics. I didn't grab any of the grooves but they are not "box grooves".

I believe that these are "short hosel" Precisions but don't know much more than that about them. Any additional information that you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Very nice! What I like is that you reshafted them with modern shafts that made them playable for you and you did a good job too with the shaft pins from what I saw. I believe you may have dialed them good since you state they are only one club shorter than your Miura irons

Yep, that was the intent anyway. Once I did a little research and found out that the stock lofts were almost exactly 1 club weak of my Miuras, I decided to build them like that. The swing weights worked out pretty good too. Here is the spec sheet;
Club Loft Bounce Lie Length Swingweight Weight Tip Ferrule Shaft
2 20* ?* 59* 39" D2 D3 250.7g 1.9g 2.1g KBS Tour V X (2-iron)

8 44* ?* 62.25* 36" D2.5 D3 292.8g 1.3g 2.0g KBS Tour V X (8-iron)
9 48* ?* 62.5* 35.5" C8 D3 290.8g 9.7g 2.1g KBS Tour V X (9-iron)
E 52* ?* 62.5* 35.25" D1 D4 302.3g 6.2g 1.5g KBS Tour V X (9-iron)

Dual red stripe ferrule 2-9, standard black ferrule Equalizer
Lamkin Tour Black Cord, 2 tape wraps
Note; First swingweight is without tip weight
If you look at the specs really close, you'll see that the 5-iron is basically a 6-iron in every way. Since I put the shafts "straight in," I (more or less) soft stepped them. The 5-iron and the 9-iron were really the only ones that needed a little extra weight too. I've built sets in the past that didn't come in this close and they were 40-50 years newer!

Overall I'm very happy with how these turned out. A piece me is actually hoping that they play well enough to bag on a regular basis. As hard as it would be to leave my Black Oxide 1957's at home, having these in the bag just might be worth it.

On another note, anybody have any idea what the bounce on these might be? I don't have a way to measure this (at the moment).

I don't have the exact measurements, will try to get them this weekend...mine are a mis-matched set from different years, re-shafted with Apex Extra 4's, at this point I have 6-9, Equalizer, Utility Wedge, (both Sunburst models) and an Exploder (the wedges have original shafts) I have a 4 and 5 iron in transit. I use these as my classic set so yes, I play them pretty regularly, you will like them, very solid irons.

If you'd like a 2-iron as well I'll send you my "spare" for the price of shipping. It's 100% original (less grip) and is showing its age but it's still a Precision. That will get you another step closer to a full set. Just a thought.

Yep you really soft stepped that equalizer. With that set up on lofts on the bottom end you do not need a gap wedge with it being 52*. that is the same degree that my Hogan PC is and I soft stepped it too. It hits real good in fact I pulled the Muirfield PW out of the CF-4000 set and put that PC in because it hits so good

Rebby-

So- After the work, this Hogan Precision set is just one club weaker than your Miura set?

If they play as good as they look...
Pretty much, that's how they were built anyway. Hit the 7 iron side by side with my Miura 8 iron late last week. I could have dropped a hula hoop over all of the ball marks (the ones that I hit well that is, we won't discuss the others). Trajectory and spin was slightly higher with the Hogans but it's hard to say why. The Miuras have C-Taper in S+, the Hogans sport "soft stepped" (sort of) Tour Vs in X so it's not exactly a 1:1 comparison.

Fabulous, work of art! Have they been repinned or just glued? Bet you had some fun just trying to find the pin on some of those amazing how they managed to hide them.

Yeah, they did a great job of hiding the pins. I did not re-pin them, I just put enough glue in there that it ran out and filled the old pin holes for the most part. Turned out really nice.

I won the bag in a contest that Ben Hogan was hosting during the PGA Championship. Quality is second to none! I'll have a full review of it later this fall after I've had a chance to get it on the course a few times.

Soft stepping is taking a longer iron shaft and putting it into the shorter iron head. For example, 5 iron shaft in a 6 iron head. The 6 iron head is heavier and should weaken the shaft a little. It's really a slight difference many people can't feel, but if you are fine tuning, it's perfectly acceptable. Hard stepping would be the opposite (6 shaft into 5 head)

I remember someone speculating that when I first bought them. The seller had 2 sets, this one that was heads only and a second shafted with PX 6.0s IIRC. Grabbed them off of eBay, seemed that the majority of buyers didn’t really realize what these were.

Welding the pin holes shut would have looked nice and clean but I kind of like the exposed tell tale signs of the history in these irons.
