Tough few days coming up. Heading up to Geneva National later today and playing the Palmer course on Friday.

I played up there on Monday. The greens on the Palmer course were ridiculously fast. It was the first time I had ever played any of the courses at Geneva National and thought they were good.

We ended up on the Trevino and the Palmer. The Player was closed to the public.

Think the second green on the Palmer is the one the goes sharply from front to back. Have tried hitting the front of the green and letting it go but it always seems to trundle off the back.

Have said a negative word or two to Arnie on that one.

Plenty of colorful language coming from our group on that hole and many others. They must have had some ode to the us open the day before because these were quick.

Should be good fun up there. My brother and family are in town for 3 weeks and there'll be 8 of us staying on site. He's a lefty too which makes my excuses for new clubs every month slightly more plausible. Then my parents come in next month and the old man's a lefty too. I reckon he needs to test out some new clubs as well.

Managed to get to the range in between all of this weather. My game has been so good lately but my 3 wood has been garbage for too long, nothing but huge hooks. I think it's time for a 2 hybrid or 2 iron maybe scare it into playing nice.

Playing Lost Marsh with my Dad for the first time tomorrow afternoon, from what I have read on here I'm thunking driver stays in the bag for most holes in favor of accuracy off the tee.

You try weakening your grip a bit?

I think you need driver on #3, #9, and #18. They're all long holes, and 9 and 18 are fairly wide.

I play with a pretty neutral grip and have toyed with a weak one but that seems like a winter project. It's weird with my 3 wood, I might hook one iron shot a round, but it's turned into an every shot thing with my 3 wood, my other clubs are a straight shot that falls left, BIG push hook with 3 wood.

Thanks for the info on Lost Marsh, I get the impression people either love it or hate it.

Is the 3 wood adjustable? Lowering the loft will open the club face a bit, which should help.

Frankly, I don't know anyone, including myself, that love Lost Marsh. I think some of us accept it for what it is, a challenging, mostly target golf course. Players who don't like target golf tend to hate it. It's certainly not a wide open bombers course.

Let me know how the condition is. I usually play there a lot in the summer but haven't been there yet. I'd imagine yesterday's rain will have left many courses soft for at least a short while.

For those that played Cantigny, which is the better of the 2 courses there? Trying to book a work outing there.

Honestly, I don't think any of the three nines is "worse" than the other. I played Lakeside/Hillside on Sunday, and I don't seem to recall Woodside being any better or worse than these two. Each has some very strong holes, as well as one or two "meh" holes.

I will say that the par 5 2nd on Woodside is one of the toughest holes in Chicago (public) golf. #9 on Woodside is no slouch, either.

Yes, they send off 3 groups at the same time on each of the nines (Hillside/Woodside, Lakeside/Hillside, and Woodside/Lakeside) every 10 minutes (7 am - 9:am), with 13 groups going off on each pair. The next wave starts at 12:10 pm.

Cantigny is known for their conditioning

I would think it's hard to go wrong.

I would say Woodside/Lakeside would be the better 2 of 3, with Hillside a touch below.

Prairie Landing might be a good choice for an outing.

Arrowhead is also know for their conditions, but also a 27 hole layout with East/West/South 9's

East has the most targety golf of the three 9's in my opinion.

I play cantigny weekly. Woodside/ lakeside is the most difficult rated. I agree Woodside 2 is one of the hardest holes in Chicago. Hillside is the widest fairways. Lakeside is the most scenic and #9 lakeside is probably their "signature hole. Any other specific questions feel free to PM me.

Might have to try to get a twilight round at Mt Prospect in today, unless someone else is going this afternoon and looking for a partner. Will have to walk up to Mt Prospect (though they have times) or book one particular one, as I would be going as a single, and they don't book singles unless 2 is already taken.

They look pretty wide open from 3:09 until 4:03 pm. 'Shouldn't be a problem.

I know that, but was also throwing out a chance to golf with someone else. Those tee times tend to go fairly quick once afternoon gets closer. I booked that last one of the 354 time. Got to get my new TW shoes out on the course! :)

Had an interesting morning round at Lost Marsh, my old man canceled so I got around in a little over 2 hours solo. I would say I liked the course for the most part but of it I think It would take a few rounds to know what club to hit off each tee. I'm not sure why the architect thought 10 was a reasonable hole, I got really lucky with a "let's see where this goes" banana slice, but it seems like it's hit one in the water, get lucky like me or lay up and have 300 yards in from there.

Tough day off the tee, seemed to be in the rough every hole and scrambling to make pars from there. The round was highlighted by an eagle on 14 where I hit another big cut/slice and put a 6 iron to 3 inches! Shot an 80 that would have been better if I avoided the rough, I'll have to try again with my Dad and Brother.

Lol. Yes, it does take a few rounds to get a hang of the place. When they first opened, #10 was the 1st hole, with hilarious backups ensuing. You can poke a 5 wood straight out, and play the hole in 3 shots, try to fade a driver around the blind corner, or simply try to hit it dead straight over the corner to leave yourself a reachable shot in two (not recommended for a first time visit.

Nice play of 14. Sweet. While reachable in two, I play for my par/birdie the old fashion way. As you discovered, though, cutting the corner can pay off provided that you can find you ball.

How many drivers did you hit? How'd you do on #3? The wind was from the north today, so I'm guessing it was a beast.

Well my round, and possibly my year have been cut short. Went to hit my tee shot on 10, and my left knee just sort of popped and gave out. Going to have to head to the ER or doctors tonight/tomorrow. Hoping for the best, but feel like it could be near the worst.

At the very least, I don't expect to be able to golf again for at least a month, worst case scenario, hopefully stays under 6 months, but that is still the year for Chicago.

I played from the back so I hit driver a lot, but didn't need to, it put me in trouble more than it helped. Ran through some bends in fairways and on 12 I ran into a hazard. I play without a range finder so unless I have a really good course guide it's guess work off the tee. I got really lucky on 10 and 14, don't think I would try to hit a big slice with driver again, it's pretty amazing I pulled it off twice today. 3 was fine, but I can see it being tough.

Played Cantigny today

Started on woodside and conditions were perfect. Then played lakeside and the greens were heavily sanded. A little disappointing when your ball accumulates a line of sand for any putt more than 6 inches. Tough to get a good roll on the ball.
