Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

has anyone played Wilmette so far this year?

we're having a group tourney on the course in July and I haven't played it before.

Thinking about playing there this week to get a feel for the course.

I haven't played it, but find the scorecard online (sometimes needed to follow holes) and browse google earth. I do that, at least briefly, for almost every course I go to for the first time, just to get an idea what is there.

I know it's a cow pasture, but is Fresh Meadows worth a one time visit? I have an appointment early on Saturday morning in Oak Brook, so I'll be teeing off at 11 am or so. I have to be back downtown by 4 pm, so I don't have a lot of time to play anything further out. I've played Oak Brook at Willow Crest, but have avoided FM until now. 'Not expecting much, but it has to be playable.

Go for it especially if you get a Hot Deal on it.

I booked a tee time for Hilldale tomorrow morning. I'm hoping they are wrong aboot the forecast.

Aboot? We have an Aussie on the Chicago board and now a Canadian. Welcome to Chicago!

Lol, stupid auto correct.

Yes, I've played Wilmette several times this season, but not in the last few weeks. What would you like to know?

The course is vastly improved since the renovation. The greens now have some character, whereas before they were very bland. The main goal was to improve drainage, which seems to have happened. The course is not going to be top 25 material, but it's a decent muni.

Ideally you need to be able to work the ball off the tee both ways. Holes 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 work best with a fade. Holes 3, 7, 9, 15, 17, and 18 work best with a draw. The others are straight ball holes.

Hole 3 has the most difficult green since the redo, as they oriented it sideways, which make it very shallow. The short par 3 12th has a tricky green if the pin is front right.

Holes 5, 14, and 15 are short par 4's, and should probably be played with a fairway wood off the tee. One can play driver, but I don't think it gains you much.

The par 5 17th can be reached in two with a very good drive, but the green is tough to hold.

I play Wilmette a lot. For a local park dist. course I like it. The redesign is a tremendous improvement. I generally agree with Arg's analysis. The only hole I don't like is 17.

17 is a tough nut. It's a par 5 dogleg left. If you go too far left off the tee, the trees will block your second, making for a tough layup. You need to split the middle of the fairway on your tee shot. The layup area has water on the left, and trees on the right, so it's tight. However, if you lay back too far, it can be tough to hold the shallow green with a mid iron, especially with a middle pin position. A back left pin is actually easier.

I think i will play Wilmette this Friday afternoon right at the start of twilight.

I know I'll be playing during one of the busier time slots, but how is pace of play there in general?

Pace of play has always been great, which is one reason it's on my regular play list. In over 60 rounds, I think my longest round was 4:30. Weekend rounds are typically 4:00 to 4:15.

I think the big reason is that the majority of players walk the course.

Anyone interested in playing Countryside (Prairie) on Sunday at 8:35 am? There's an opening for two, and they don't allow singles to book. The long range forecast looks great for Sunday.

Sure, why not. Use a $10 reward, play 9 at Schaumburgh for $3.49. Hopefully I can get done before rain arrives.

WTF. A 34.9% tax rate?

Tomorrow - had a choice to either play in a scramble (Realtors' outing) at Village Greens OR play Bull Valley In Woodstock. For some unknown reason, I picked the scramble... I almost wish we'll get rained out ?

The 3.49 GN fee is part of doing business, and while it looks bad for a $10 fee, not as bad when you are paying $50 a round. I realize it is there and consider it in the cost of the round. I could have paid 19.xx or 2x.xx at the course, or book a hot deal with a 3.49 fee, for a total of 13.49. Use the reward, free greens fee, and one more fee, earning more points towards another reward.

As it being 9 holes, I wanted to make sure that I got in before any rain came, and I literally booked it less than an hour before the tee time. By the time I got to 8, I was wanting to play more.

As for the round, shot a 43. Tried the TP Mills putter I got and torched over the winter. Wasn't a bad result from it. 17 putts over the 9 holes. Started out par par with two GIRs, and thought I was in for a good round. Still wasn't bad, but I keep hitting right (thinking I am leaving the club open into impact).

After the round, I checked 2 Ross stores, and a BCF to see if any had gotten more golf shoes. Neither had, but I was able to snag 3 polos from Ross for <$40 after taxes. Being a big guy, it isn't the easiest to find stores that carry my size in store, so was nice to find a few without having to order online.

I'm up for a round at Countryside. Are you planning to walk or ride? (It's not the most walk friendly course but it can be done. The Traditional course there is a little easier to walk.) Either is ok by me as me thinks I will be picking up a Clicgear 8.0 this week.

I'm starting to make plans for the 4th of July weekend. I'll be heading up to the McHenry/Lake County area, and have an initial list of courses: Brae Loch CC, Bonnie Dundee GC, Boone Creek GC, Palatine Hills GC, Pinecrest GC, Antioch GC, and Twin Lakes CC (WI).

Any thoughts? I know I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here, but I assume they're playable at a minimum. 'Seems like a handful don't allow singles to book online, so it may be tough getting on the courses.

Fox lake country club is probably best bang for your buck in lake county, nice greens and a lot of hills/ blind approaches

I think this course has been covered but couldn't seem to find it last night. Anyone have any opinions on lake bluff?

I played it last Father's Day. Here's my take on it on page 24: http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1172783-where-are-you-playing-tomorrow-chicago-round2/page__st__690__p__11801928?do=findComment&comment=11801928.

It's a decent tree-lined muni, but nothing special. A few funky holes, but overall playable.
