Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

Looking to maybe hit up a course or two early this week.

Any suggestions of some to try? I'm in the Loop and don't want to drive TOO far. I've played Harborside, Ruffled, Cog, George Dunne and I would like to try a few different tracks.

Ideally good value cost-wise would be great too!

Stonewall Orchard or Ravisloe perhaps?

An hour and a half frost delay this morning. In May. WTF. I walked 18 at Sportsman's today. Cold, wet, and breezy, but not as bad as yesterday. The course was very soft. The greens were bumpy, but playable.

Decent round with 11 greens, and 2 birdies.

Anything south of downtown worth playing?

Played Lost Marsh before and didn't mind it.

Ravisloe was mentioned. Have you played George Dunne? I wouldn't recommend it on the weekends due to abysmal pace of play, but an early week round might not be too bad. Balmoral Woods is worth the 40 mile drive.

Odyssey, Coyote Run, and Glenwoodie are playable, but nothing special.

Otherwise, most of the southern courses aren't worth the time, e.g. River Oaks, Burnham Woods, Joe Louis, Meadows.

A number of folks are put off by the 4th, 5th, and 14th holes. Holes 4 and 5 are on the northern border of the property, and they didn't have much land to work with. They're narrow holes that require straight shots, with OB left, and water right. The par 5 4th is not really reachable in two, as the green is surrounded with trouble. Hit a 5 wood off the tee, a hybrid to the layup area, and a short iron to the green. A par is a fine score. Hole 5 is short, and requires no more than a 5 iron off the tee. If you get greedy, it can bite.

Hole 14 is a Z shaped par 5. If you bomb one over the right trees, you can probably reach in two, but there is trouble all around the green. A 3 wood off the tee, and a 7 or 8 iron to the layup area set you up with a easy wedge to the green. Play it safe and there are no issues.

Otherwise the course is a mix of prairie style, woodland, and watery holes. I think it's a good mix. #3 is a long par 4, and one of the hardest holes in Chicagoland golf, especially on a windy day.

Conditioning is never great, but it's not a goat track, either. It's overpriced, but still a bargain compared to Harborside. The bar in the clubhouse is excellent. Harborside should kidnap the clubhouse.

Agreed with a lot of things that have already been said. number 3,4,10, and 14 just seem off. The course conditions are hit or miss. The club house staff is either really good or could care less that you are there. The pace of play is usually higher than I think it should be. On a positive note the club house and restaurant upstairs are nice but for me there are other courses in the area that are nicer and better value.

So Danielle from HoE just surfaced. She's been busy suffice to say...

She had a bun in the oven. Little girl...

Oh Geez...does little Danielle resemble any member of the Chicago crew??? You know, there are some pictures floating around...

You asked for this.

One of the best posts ever!

LMFAO, coffee on the tablecloth!

This must be why DP4 took me to Schaumburg!

Loved Schaumburg, by the way, and now that I've met the infamous smoking hot Mrs. Pelz (he's living a dream) can't understand this Tiger-like behavior.

Very kind of you to say Hawk and probably explains why Mrs. Pelz asked if you were single!

Some useless information.... LPGA's Symetra tour held the tournament there for few years (2010 was the last year). Lowest round ever - Jenny Shin - 64. These gals age good!!!

Local knowledge at Lost Marsh is probably worth 3 shots alone for knowing some of the lines.

Easily. #10 is a dogleg par 5. If you hit driver, you have to cut the corner, otherwise you'll run through the fairway and into the hazard. #1 is a risk/reward hole. The fairway narrows into a peninsula. If you hit driver or fairway wood, you need to be straight to have a short iron or wedge into the green. I generally hit a mid iron to take the hazard out of play (after too many opening doubles), and hit an 8 or 9 iron for the approach. #15 is a short, tough par 4 when the wind is blowing. Driver/3-wood off the tee brings the water hazard on the right into play. Laying short leaves a mid iron into a very narrow green with OB right and hazard left.

When LM first opened, #10 was the starting hole, but it generally lead to a backup as the main landing area was a blind shot, and a lot of first time players would hit driver through the fairway. After a year or so, they swapped the nines. This allowed an easier start on the short par 4, but meant that 3, 4, and 5 were played early. These holes are a heck of a tough start to a round.

LM is certainly not my favorite course in the area, but I think it gets a lot of unfair criticism. Yes, it has a few "gimmick" holes, but they're simply target golf holes that require precision over power. It seems that a lot of folks are unhappy if they can't bomb a 300 yard drive on every hole, but then again, this is GolfWRX.

Played at Mt.Prospect again yesterday afternoon. I really didn't want to play, was still recovering from the weather on Saturday, but the wife wanted to play so off we went. Don't know if it was cause I didn't want to play, but I had my worst round since 2014. Shot a 97, a week after shooting 84 there. Couldn't get anything right. Forgot how to swing a hybrid on the range beforehand and that was an issue all round. Off the tee I replaced my usual miss to the right with misses to the left all day. Left 4 putts an inch short. Just awful all around.

Come on Arg...the 300 yard drive, as of the Player's Championship, is old school. It's now the 308 yard 2-iron.

So I worked for 10 hours yesterday/last night, and had a 807 tee time this morning, right after work. Went with a few guys from work to Tanna Farms. Not a horrible course, but definitely nothing special. As for my round, it was from one extreme to the next. I hit par the first 2 holes, par the 4th, birdie the 9th, and shot a 45 on the front (it was either par or triple). At least I am able to have a plausible blame (fatigue/sleep deprivation) as I was up all night, and worked. Hoping to get another round in either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Snuck in 9 holes at Mt. Prospect after hearing about it here. I have mixed feelings about this course. Mostly positive, but not sure it's enough to motivate me to go out of my way to play 18 there, or suggest to friends that we meet there.

I love how it's tucked in the middle of a residential neighborhood. It has cozy vibe - from the parking lot to the clubhouse, to the practice areas. It does feel a little tight, though. I can imagine what it was like before the renovations, and tell why it needed sprucing up. The best feature about the course may also be its worst feature and that, of course, is the much talked about greens. The practice green gives golfers a good idea of what lies ahead for them. I think it's particularly important to spend a few focused minutes there before teeing off. I love the architectural concept of fast, undulating greens, but it was taken a bit too far at Mt. Prospect. Holes 1,2,8 and 9 in particular - and that's too many gimmicky greens for one side of a course. The unfortunate thing is, those greens are close to being great, but restraint wasn't on the mind of the architect, apparently.

I did like the layout, thought the par 3's were very good and the bunkering is also very well done. Sand conditions were well kept (thankfully), but I thinks it's going to be difficult to maintain those greens in the long term. And I can't end this post without complimenting the golf carts - quiet, comfortable, interactive GPS, sand bottles (filled) and those cool overhead compartments for whatever. Only missing on cart ball and club washers.

I think that's a fair assessment. The course plays tough, especially in the wind. I assume they've kept the greens on the slow side to avoid 6 hour rounds.

Just moved to the area. Played Ruffled Feathers yesterday. After all the rain it wasn't overly wet. Course was in great shape. Only complaint is the minefield of goose crap. Other than that fun course

Welcome to the area! I really wish there wasn't a ban on killing geese. I'd have a field day. F'in flying rats.
