More a fun place to hit balls and drink with friends. I drove by the new facility in Vegas and the place looks pretty amazing, but not the kind of place I would want to practice at.

Its a place to hang out and not a place to hit balls or work on your game. Its basically for non golfers and people looking for something to do. The balls are not normal golf balls and the clubs they provide have super whippy graphite shafts. I wouldnt go back, you cannot practice there you have to play one of the games.

I don't understant the hate on topgolf not being somewhere you can practice? Its a range with golf balls that tell you exactly how close you hit to your target lol sounds like pretty good practice to me

 

As for the whippy shafts.. are you not allowed to bring your own clubs? In my experience every range ive ever been to always has poor rental clubs anyway (except manahattan indoor places tend to have some nicer options because its harder to bring your own clubs)

I'm guessing you could practice at Top Golf with no real problem but your probably wouldn't want. I've never been but I'm guessing Top Golf isn't cheap and you are paying a premium for the social aspect but if you are practicing by yourself you aren't really taking full advantage of the place. Can be done but guessing just not cost effective.

Top Golf isn't somewhere I'd go to get real practice in, but I think it's a great place to hang out with buddies who may or may not play golf at all levels.

 

Personally, I think it's a very fun atmosphere to introduce people to golf and to hang out.

also, to the people furious you can't practice at a top golf, do you also complain about the stimp of greens at mini-golf?

 

the place is meant to be fun and practice. and yes, you can bring your own clubs if the rentals are 'too whippy' for you.

Pretty excited for this as I live pretty close. Construction looks like it's moving along, I don't believe it will be ready until early 2017.

You can just practice without playing a game, there is an option for that but it's not money well spent at $45 an hour. I went on Monday for the first time and liked it. It encourages you to hit at a target and it's novel to see how well you did, instead of just beating balls all day even if you are trying to aim at greens at a regular range.

 

I actually discovered a flaw in my swing that had to fix when I was gunning for the 185 yard green. After fixing it, I played later that day and gained 20 yards on my drives and airmailed the green on some of my irons. Maybe I'll post the full report in the instruction or golf talk forum sometime.

Topgolf Edison is open. Grand Opening Friday Dec 23 but they had a soft launch so I checked it out and really really liked it. I was alone and found it much more entertaining and productive than hitting range balls for an hour. Having the games forced me to focus, even though I was basically playing against myself. Really looking forward to getting back and taking friends who are only moderately interested in golf (they play 4-5x a year) but should really like the social aspect. It's sort of the social part of bowling with target games similar to darts. With the TVs it seems like an awesome place to hang and play and watch the majors.

Topgolf is basically bowling meets golf. It's a cool way to do something golf-related with friends of varying skill levels. Also a good way to get some quicker golf in vs. a course. I really like it - I've played with my friends in DC and have been jealous they have access to it. They do leagues at that location too on weeknights.

 

Looking forward to checking this out, especially the next few months before it warms back up.

Top Golf is a carry over of the lounge/Sports bar meets a sport.

In Bowling, its the Bowlmor or Bowlingo franchise.

They've been exceedingly successful while the rest of the industry has collapsed.

Bowling makes any problems in golf look like a minor quibble.

 

The owner is now the only game in town for bowling access.

Think if only one brand survived and same owner also ran every golf course in the US.

 

Yes, Top Golf is an expensive way for casual players to hit some balls.

Think pinball and flashing targets.

Definitely no for the traditional, hardcore just want to practice/dig out of the dirt player.

 

However, its impossible to ignore a successful business model.

It brings in new audiences including new to casual players and removes problems with time element.

Meanwhile everyone enjoys the sports bar.

 

The range gets multiple revenue streams, income independent of the weather, season and time of day.
