Jack Nicklaus US Am Irons (Merged)

Quickfire14

Recommended Posts

I heard recently that Jack Nicklaus used single length irons when he won one (or both) of his US Amateur titles. The person who stated this said that he saw the clubs at Buckeye Hall of Fame Café before it closed.

Can anybody corroborate this I information?

I'm looking for anyone out there that can shed any light on this. I know somebody on this site knows!

Thank you for any help you can offer.

I seriously doubt it. I can't even find a mention of single length irons until the mid 1980's.

I have heard that Jack was pretty traditional and played most of his career with similar MacGregor blades, so I am sure that if he did, it would be a fairly well known fact. I do know that he used a wooden shafted putter for those two Am wins and it is in the Jack Nicklaus Museum in Columbus, OH.

I really doubt it. I think he probably played TT Dynamic shafts, which were in just about everyone's clubs in pay then, including woods. I can't imagine what the swing weights would have been like if he did such a thing. But, I'm seldom right! :swoon:

Define single length. If you mean shafts with no steps on the outside. You could be correct. I think he used straight taper shafts which had steps on the inside. If you mean all the clubs were the same length , I doubt that is true.

Yeah the person who stated this said that they were actually the same physical length, and he was saying this in reference to the fact that Bryson Dechambeau is not the first person to have success with single length irons, that's it was actually Jack.

1959 US AM

1961 US AM

Both years it looks like he's using a normal transition set of irons. I've also heard the rumor that Bryson's coach Mike Schy said that Bobby Jones used a single length set of irons in 1930 when he won the Grand Slam, which is also not true.

I remember an article on a test on Nicklaus' bag from the 60s or 70s...it mentioned that few of shafts had the same frequency (that BJones' hickories were closer matched) and that a some of the balls left in the were out of round.

Never heard anything about his shafts being the same length.

not surprising about frequencies. When was the tech invented? As for the MacGregor ball. It is well know they made horrible balls. Rumor had it it that Jack had a special ball made or that he was using a Titleist that was re-logo'd.

No way the clubs were single length. Absurd.

This thread reminds me of all the modern swing gurus who claim Hogan did all these things they are promoting. Next thing you know they will be claiming Hogan Vardon used single length clubs. I mean they aren't around to dispute it so why not?

My favorite, was when the "Natural Golf" guys (Moe Norman clones) claimed Hogan was a disciple.

Than again, the Jim McLean Single Plane guys adopted Hogan, Nelson, Jones, Nicklaus, Watson, Norman, Snead, Tiger and any other name with less than 10 letters.

If one was new to golf and was perusing a list of golf books to read they would think Hogan authored 25 books on the golf swing, not two.

Well, Natural Golf was somewhat out on a limb when they claimed Moe was a disciple.

i know that Jack played the MacGregor '67 VIP irons for a while - they had straight, step less shafts.

Wait a second, I've always gone under the premise that not only did Sam try to assist Moe at the Masters(He actually did) but that Moe and Ben were tight and he stayed and played with Ben and Valerie when he was galavanting through the Southern States :)

Doesn't the Big Mac fit in here somewhere???

I just can't for the life of me see he and Hogan sitting and discussing the swing, lol

Have a nice week Kathy Marie & Gents :)

I have a set of straight taper irons. They are stiffer than Lanny's apex 5 and make Tiger's specs seem truly. Pu---y in comparison. They had steps on the inside of the shaft. There is a kick point, but it takes a strong human to flex it. In my opinion, Jack and possibly Weiskopf were the only players with the ability to use that flex
