Thrift Store Jackpot

Recommended Posts

I'm low-key kicking myself for passing over the two or three sets of Ping Zing 2s that I've seen around here.

Recently, I found one of these lil' guys and it came home with me:
https://www.2ndswing.com/golf-clubs/drivers/nike-nds-driver/right-handed-stiff-graphite-45dot0in-d-62224257660

And, locally, someone's been trolling the donation bins:  They'll donate, say, a 3-4-5-6i to one thrift shop and a 7-8-9-w to another.

Brewski_Golfs , those TopFlites with the bird on ball are great looking irons.

I picked these Wilson Tour Blade (FG17 I guess? even though no FG17 logo) up from Facebook marketplace. I got a 2 to PW set, the grips are in great shape.

I use Wilson Gooseneck blades as my everyday irons now and I wanted a second set to leave in the truck all the time for driving range visits or quick 9 hole outings. I wanted them to play somewhat similar to the Goosenecks so that improvements with either set carried over to the other but I couldn't find any Goosenecks for sale with the same shafts(and my irons have a long discontinued Brunswick graphite shaft) so figured these would work for now and they were only 15 minutes away.  They are noticeably a bit smaller than the Gooseneck irons but don't seem to have much difference in offset in the 7 irons I compared.

Pretty sure they are the forerunners to the FG-17s, in other words the 1978~1980 Staff Tour Blades.

I'm not actually sure how different they are from the FG-17s, but Word on the street fairways is that they are  cracking set of irons, so nice pick-up🍻

The Tour Blades are the Wilson Staff iron from 1978 to 1980.  They have a thinner sole, and a slightly larger bulge to the muscle, when viewed from the toe end of the clubhead, compared to the FG-17.

They have the same lofts as the FG-17s.  20/23/26 in the 2i/3i/4i, and 4* between each iron from the 4i to the PW.

A lovely set.  I have a set myself.  Have hit them on the range, but I've never played them, and not sure I will.  They have Dynamic S, which I've largely aged out of.  😐   They also had strange lengths, not a consistent change in length between the clubs.  I was in the process of extending them to line them up better when I switched to graphite.

I took them to the range today, once I got used to them I was swinging pretty well. They are about 5 yards shorter per club than my Wilson Gooseneck FG53s maybe. They are all 1 degree weaker loft and about 1/2" shorter..also metal vs. graphite shaft though I am not really sure what flex either shaft is since neither are labeled(label on these is black at the top).

The 5 iron was maybe a little harder to hit but I seemed to be catching on to it at the end of my session. The PW/8/7 hit the same feel wise. I didn't bring 3/4/6/9. I can make some nice shots with my Gooseneck 4i off the tee and occasionally good fairway lie and some decent tee shots with the 3i. When I say 'nice shot' I mean 170-175 carry off the tee with the 4i and lands where it was supposed too...not nice by the 210 yard 7 iron crew standards.

The Tour Blade 2i was unhittable off the tee for me...just wanted to go right with the same swing I use with the other blade long irons and several flat mishits that went low and 100 yards. I will have to try the 3 and 4 in Tour Blade just for the heck of it and see how they compare to the Goosenecks.

I think they'll work fine as leave in the truck driving range and occasional after work 9 clubs. Probably will go 4/6/8/W and put a new shaft in the Louisville 5 wood that had the shaft break and it should get me around my 6000 yard home course as well as my playing ability allows. Any gains in ability from practice should transfer well enough between the 2 sets of Wilson irons.

Have no idea about the Brassie, they had the driver as well, but half the face was missing. The shaft seems to be fraud wood over steel, is that 30’s?  The Hogan wedge is a little beat but a nice forged wedge non the less, not sure on the year for that either. It is really too bad that they only had the 2-4 of the Hogan Precision, they have the green label rockets, which makes me regret it even more. Really liked the Wilson lob wedge, the head was gifted to me, and I found out why quickly. A normal iron shaft only goes down half way, there is a metal ring, that I can’t drill out, have tried tapered, and even tried putting a .33 driver shaft in it and it even got caught on the ring. Maybe I’m an idiot if anybody knows, please enlighten me please

When I found a 6 & 8 (lefty Slazenger) of those in a thrift store a few weeks back I sold them off on eBay for 10x what I paid. Smart move taking them home!

they were so beautiful, I figured at least I'm keeping them from being a yard ornament, the will be appreciated in my home, and maybe make some use for them

Do it in the Police Station parking lot

Wonder what is with some people?  I text the woman asking if they were still in her possession and if I can come see them.  One word answer - yes.  I respond great and ask for time and place.  **poof** Disappeared and no response since.

As far as police parking lot, good suggestion.  I tend to take proper precautions in these transactions.

It’s all fantastic!!! The stamping in the sole’s are so pronounced. The color on the persimmons look very rich even with the black face’s. Is that gator skin on the bag? I’m a sucker for cool head covers and I’d treasure those Bay Hill Classic’s. Congrats on that purchase and thanks for the pic’s.

Did some black paint fill on the soles and wow!  Pics this evening.  The persimmons need a scuff and recoat.  The bag is dead naugas with faux gator texture.  Even has the rain cover, the carry strap is still stiff and is in like new condition.  Since I found the set is very early ‘80s, not quite as thrilled, but then again Honma was only around for a decade at that point.

The head covers are a prize by themselves. I was truly anxious to see and buy this collection after viewing the ad on Marketplace.  Never expected to play a set of true JPN clubs and I have the current Mizunos.
