Thrift Store Jackpot

Recommended Posts

I used to play the Titleist PTS 90. The first and second generation balls felt nice, granted they weren't great spinners but they putted nicely. The final generation were awful, the winding was just a vestigial token gesture, it was essentially a cheap two piece ball.

In retrospect, although I played a lot of good hickory golf back then, I also broke quite a few shafts.

I recall Titleist DTs feeling as hard as their 2 piece models.

The worst damage I ever did to a wooden head 40 plus years ago was not with a Top-Flite but on a toe hit with a 90 compression wound Titleist DT.

I've always believed that the issue with damage to woods wasn't two-piece versus wound but rather Surlyn versus balata.  If that isn't true, why is a 100 compression wound ball ok to hit with a wood but not a 100 compression two piece ball?  It's kind of like the old trick question, "what weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead?"  100 compression is 100 compression regardless of construction, so the issue must be with the cover material rather than the design of the ball.

Thankfully, modern ionomer covers such as those used on modern low compression balls are much softer than the Surlyn of the 70s and 80s.  I would think the modern high compression premium ball, which is essentially a Surlyn covered solid ball with a thin layer of urethane on the outside to make it spin more around the greens, could be quite hard on a wooden head.

Bottom line, I would be very hesitant to use old Titleist DTs (or Blue Max or Ram 3D-that one might be the worst-or ProStaff or any other wound Surlyn ball of that era) with persimmon or laminated woods.

Not vintage but couldn’t leave these behind at the thrift store. Future vintage purchase money makers?? Paid $27.36 for 4-SW Mizuno MX-19 ladies irons that have barely been played. Essentially demo club condition, grips are just slightly dry but definitely no wear. Gotta figure out how to move em. Guessing 2nd Swing would pay significantly more than I paid. Been thinking of trying eBay selling once again. Maybe the more recent changes make it a decent option, hmmm…..

The latest batch of clubs put out at a local thrift had double, double the usual price!

Oh well, I decided to take this home anyway instead of waiting for the half price sale this Saturday. I will go back for the set of M75 irons and get them on Saturday if they are still there, though.

This might be my favorite thrift store find of many, many thrift store finds.

Beautiful irons and appear not to have been played much. I don’t see great finds like this in my area. As a senior golfer I may have even played these.

Hardly a mark on them and for ladies irons not feminine looking at all. If I can’t flip em my 12 year old boy may play them. Know I got incredibly lucky. Pickin’s are rarely this good but I have gotten a nice Hoofer carry bag and a set of Muirfield’ 20th irons minus a 7 iron out of this place in the last year. I visit this thrift just about weekly. Why someone wouldn’t put 1 minute into investigating their value and figure out a way to make a buck or 2 but instead donate them to a non charity thrift store is beyond me. Sign of my hoarding qualities perhaps.

What I would do is pull the heads and sell them. Or re-shaft them for myself.

Yeah, I probably will. I have a set of Persimmon Muirfield 20th anniversary woods, I need to list for sale. Bunch of other stuff too, keep procrastinating.

It even said "Richard O'hara" on the sole...😏

And as for the "Ping" Dalehead...well, he eventually figured that one out as well🤣

The lady didn't know what she was talking about relative to Ping putters.  Starting at 4:11.  A wall of MnBr Pings being called BeCu.  Come on!!  Most popular?  B60???  BeCu Ping Anser??  Since when?  For a hundy?   Got a couple OG 029 Ansers in the basement that I'd sell immediately for that kind of coin.  Besides the "Dalehead" that wasn't.

Rubber cement on the regrip because you want to play the club that day?  Rubber cement squirting out the butt end.  What a mess.  LOL.  What, you don't have an hour or so before it's played?  You're in SoCal, let the club set in the sun for 15 minutes.

Any one of us in this room could put together a quality set of Nuevo Classic or Classic for $500.  The greater challenge would be assembling a quality set for something like $200.  I've mentally tabulated thrift store/garage sale finds that were acquired for less than that.  Quality sticks, no junk.  Then again, wasn't paying used full retail either.

Oh don't get me started on the pricing....😁

I recently picked up a BeCu B60 (Ping's most popular putter, doncha know🤣) for 3,300 yen, which includes 10% sales tax.

That's US$24.78 at today's exchange rate.

Quality pickup Catchy.  Beats my Cu Pat Pend A2 that I paid $40 for because the seller thought it was "brass".  Wasn't of a notion to tell him otherwise.  Although I can't putt very well with it.  Nevertheless, I flash it in the bag once in awhile.  Just because.  Nobody notices.

That's the thing with classic clubs and peripherals.  What can be found and how cheaply can they be acquired.  Best to understand the game when you're a scrounger.

It’s quite the understatement to say I’m excited about this find. 2-9, very similar profile to the golden rams that I’ve been wanting. Only downside is like many older clubs they are about an “1 under standard length, I would extend the shafts but I also want to keep the grips 🤷‍♂️. I’ve never pulled grips to reuse. At any rate, can’t wait to hit these! 🤩🤩🤩

I think yours beats mine, even if mine was slightly cheaper!

I don't normally get on with plumber's neck type putters, but I've made some recent changes to my putting stroke, and I am getting on well with the B60.

I had a BeCu B60 a few years ago, but ended up selling it because I could not make a putt with it. I'll be really happy if this one continues to work out for me, as I loved the look of the BeCu B60 putters when I was a Junior, but could never afford one.

As you say, one thing I love about the old clubs is how cheaply they can be acquired. And also the variety of clubs that are out there.

Wow!  A set of RT70's.  Impressive!

Personally, I wouldn't think the grips are worth keeping.  They might look cool, but unless they're really leather, don't think they're worth the effort.

I wonder if you might be able to find a PW, maybe Clubfinders?  Failing that, there's always Golden Ram substitute potential...  🙂

That was actually fun to watch. I sort of get where he's coming from now as well in terms of classic golf. Also, to his credit, he told his mate to hang on to the BeCu Hogan sand iron rather than put it back.

Well, "non-charity" thrift store...what is that? I've donated some good sets & orphan clubs to a local "charity" thrift store and spoke w/them about putting a price that would be good for them & good for the buyer..
