My daughter wanted some vintage clothes so we went to Goodwill a few weeks ago. Two bags of clubs were sitting outside. One was a junior set of Ping Moxie’s, the perfect size for my younger daughter. Like new for $15. The other bag had 3-9 iron and 3 wedges all excellent condition, Ping Eye 2 Orange Dots; Big Bertha War Bird Gems (driver, 3 and 5); Ping Pal 2 putter; Carbite ZM putter; a dozen new Callaway balls. $20!!! I paid as fast as I could for both sets. All too short for me and most are sold already.

I couldn’t believe my luck so I pressed it a little further and went back the next week. What was sitting out there in the same spot was a perfect looking red Ping Sunday bag. I walked up to it with great anticipation. As soon as I saw the Mizuno MP-14’s (amazing condition), I snagged it. Paid $35! There were two drivers and two putters in there as well but I didn’t know much about them... yet.

To be honest, I’ve been out of the golf game for a while and only started playing again a few months ago. These finds have really stirred things up for again and I’ve played more this summer than the last 5 years combined.

Back to the bag! The two drivers were a Ping G10 in awesome condition and a Ping TiSi which was pretty rough. The putters looked great but I know nothing about putters so I had to do a little research.

Putter 1- Bettinardi BB1F, midnight black!!!

Putter 2- Piretti Cottonwood 2, onyx!!!

I fell in love with the Piretti on the practice green. The Betti was a little short for me.

I traded the Bettinardi for a Scotty X7m which was my length. Maybe not a great trade but I was curious and ended up really liking the way I hit the Scotty. Now I need to either sell the Piretti or the Scotty and I can’t decide, they are very different but both work well for me. I’m going to keep the one that doesn’t sell first. Haha!

I really lucked out and went back a few more times but didn’t see any more clubs. I’ll keep trying, though. ?

I constantly look for a set of MP-14s. I never see them but hope one day a set will show up.

No need to start another thread but how about trash can jackpot. Buddies son rescued these out of the trash can bye the driving range at the golf course he works at. Palmer ‘the Deacon’ irons 2-P minus a 4 iron but one of the last Hogan Apex in its place. Have Precision 7.0 stepped shafts. Are these extra stiff? I’ve only associated Precision with rifle shafts.

And now the real eye candy and the true treasure!!! 1 iron

Might be one of the prettiest irons I’ve ever seen. Pictures do not do it justice. Cannot wait to try this. Yet another iron to add to my want list.

I would love to take these off their hands but am happy they have these to possibly start their vintage adventures.

7.0s would be extra stiff, yes. Quite stout indeed and a great find, in spite of the missing club.

Yeah, the logo is what is throwing me off, with the "oval snake" on the top.  It looks like Ogilvy and Poulter started with Taylormade early in their careers, then went to Cobra around 2007ish.  I think if I can pinpoint when they used that logo, it will be easier to find out who may have wore this type hat.

That's quite the haul!  Can't say that I've ever seen Spalding Executive woods in blonde finish.  All I've ever run across were the traditional black lacquer in the men's or cherry stain in women's.

5/3/23 Edit…..I moved these on to a fellow Vintager

Just picked these up at Arc thrift store near me for $2.99 a club minus my points discount I didn’t realize I had so just under $16 bucks for 3-E Hogan Radial irons with regular #3 shafts. Damn near perfect. Had to clean dirt of em so they were actually played with apparently. Original grips are even fantastic and still totally usable. Shaft labels aren’t even rolled up at all. Ferrules spin on a few clubs but matching serial numbers for set. Have to be the later cast clubs cuz zero bag chatter and chrome bottom and duller satin back and faces. Forgot the Hogan serial number dating on these later irons and remember something about the Radial with a line under it deal.

I just couldn’t leave em behind but I really have no plans for them. If anyone is a Hogan Radial lover or knows someone wanting to start their vintage journey let me know and I’d gladly pass these on for what I paid plus whatever shipping we could figure out. Damn if I keep ‘em now I gotta find some Hogan Laminates to pair with em. Already have 4 sets of ready to go players plus 2 more sets in  waiting.

Like to say I’m done buying clubs for a bit but guess it’s safer to say I’m done planning to buy any more for now. A370D54A-834A-4BE8-BCF7-482AB5DF6367.jpeg.5e4af81bf13d776c83fb79583fc4b632.jpegDAD9A005-5D60-4F06-9D63-1515A03DAFE6.jpeg.3f0c0da88482c3883a9dc4ef0332feda.jpeg

Not sure if the timeline lines up perfectly but pair these with some Kool Cats and Tear drop Zebra putter. Fun early 90’s set. See how it snowballs and fast.

1993-4.  These are cast versions of the Radial with the polished sole.  They're very odd clubs.  A cast, non shaft pinned club that doesn't show up in the catalog or price list.  I spoke with a Hogan team member that said the cast Radials were the first clubs assembled at Henrico, VA when the company moved away from Fort Worth.  The Radials ceased production when the H40 clubs started up.

I found this interesting Starwort wedge recently. Never heard of the make. It says "sailboat" under the gold boat stamp. And "The mark is best in the world." A web search doesn't turn up much except a wide-sole wedge for sale on an auction site in Japan. I guess it's a rare one? Looks good though, wide sole, a good amount of bounce, nice shape, good heft.

Measured specs: 58° loft, 68° lie, D8.5 swingweight, 474g total weight, 36" length.

I can't help you much except that I did a Japanese language search, and there appear to be a few Starwort hickory/wooden putters out there as well. From the looks of them, they are modern hickory putters (some listings said "hickory", but I not sure the wood actually is hickory).

From the specs, I'd say that SW was used by a big bloke. 36" and 68* lie angle? Crikey!

Why would English on the sole suggest a Japanese brand?

Not English per se, but rather the wording/phrasing of that English that suggests a Japanese brand, or at least a non-native English speaking country.

"Rare precision hand

made.  Starwort

wood-putter very

few in the world

like it a Real

asset to any

one's wood-

putter."

I really hope a native English speaker didn't write that.

When I first turned up in Japan, I would see all sorts of weird "Japlish" catch copy and the like on everything from clothes to cars, and that text on the putter sole reminded me of it.

One example I remember is an outdoors-y type care that had a spare tyre on the back, and the cover of the tyre had some wonderful gobbledygook on it, something like: "This gives us excellent time in Nature. Release your feelings for joyful life and successful."

Lot of good ones covered there. He mentions "back mirror" for rearview mirror; I use that now even when I think I'm speaking English.

Incidentally, Japanese cars have some real identity issues. They're British at the front, and American at the back.

They use bonnet, not hood, but trunk, not boot.

The steering wheel is called the "handle". Not sure where that comes from.

Not sure now but back in the day in Eastern NC and Eastern Virginia they used the terms boot for a car trunk and bonnet for the hood. They would also say if pushing a car  " I will push if you grab the handle and steer"  But you never heard those terms west of Wilson NC
