AARRGGHH!!  Is there some way to block pictures only?  Make them go away? Hab lime 20/20...barf.  T-Bird (The American Classic??)...barf.  Didn't realize the Grille was populated by a bunch of latent winos.

Golf yesterday.  Cool (~52*) when we teed off.  But warmed when the sun rose higher.  A brief cloudburst for a hole dampened things up.  Then cleared and was splendid.  Unusual this year, the leaves have not turned colors all that much.  Still hanging on.  Course was in splendid shape.

 

Shot by customary. Good holes, sloppy holes.  44/46.  Played the graphites, light and easy has become a trend.  Finally think I've figured out chip and pitch, at least it's no longer yippy.  Been much improved of late.  Using anything form a 7 iron to a SW depending on the "look" and "feels".  Distance control could stand some improvement.  But at least I'm getting the ball on the green, in some general direction of the pin.  Fun was had.  Days are numbered.  The bottom falls out climatically for the next week.  Don't know if there's anymore golf shorts days left.  

 

We had a burger and beer (large) for lunch at a nearby watering hole (aka dive bar).  Very good.  In light of the libations shown around here of late, the brew was exceptionally tasty.  This fact did not escape me.  Booyah.

And in other sporting news today, the first game of curling is now in the books for the 2021-2022 season in senior men's competitive league.  WE won 9-6 on the last rock scoring 3 when the opposing skip missed his takeout and stick.  Didn't stick.  Really good game with plenty of good curling shots made.  Even yours truly made a couple. 😉

Interesting revelation on the putting front for me yesterday.  If greens are slow then go with a light weight bladey putter.  If greens are quick then the heavy face balanced mallet seems to be more reliable at making putts. 🤔

Well I will say if it works for you ok--- Me I am just the opposite--- I love a Ironmaster blade style on slick bent greens. But with that being said a couple of months ago I played a course I had not played in a while with slick fast bent greens. I got out there and thought &%$#*%$ I forgot this place has slick bent greens. I was thinking man I wish I had brought one of my Ironmasters or my Cleveland 8802. It did not matter I putted lights out with my rusty lead taped heavy Scotty. So my statement may be moot

I do not know if I ever told you this--- When we had our truck we were laid over for a weekend with an oversized load in Minnesota. They had a curling tournament at a near by mall we could actually walk to from the truck stop. Pretty cool we watched and we had excellent food and beer. One of those things I do not know how I would play but it sure was fun watching. One of our fellow spectators gave us a ride back to the Truck Stop because the weather had gotten bad and it had started snowing. In fact they would not let permitted loads move for 2 days so we were there 4 days.

I got 9 in today. The rain hit just as i finished the 9th.  By the time igot to the truck

the rain was over, and the sun was out, and the wind was up to about 20mph. I called it a day

and went home !  Highs tomorrow and the next ten days in the low 60's with some rain but should still

be able to get some more in before the great gray shelf moves in.

I tried hitting an old Adams hybred today.  Have had it for years but  left it in the garage. After

a couple shots with it I remembered why i threw it into the barrell..lol  Instant hook machine !

I may have mentioned earlier that I picked up a Burner Plus "C" head 5 iron from Clubfinder.com via eBay.  The club arrived today and it was as I suspected an NOS unhit 5 iron.  The plastic had been removed from the head and the grip, but it was pristine with nary a mark anywhere along with the glint of fresh chrome.  I paid enough for a single iron at $60, but when I saw it in person and compare that with the $180+ prices for new orders from OEMs it was a veritable bargain.

 

Kinda cool to be able to claim that my irons are actually a set from the TM Tour Van which I believe was the only place you could get "C" heads new.😎

Now, I did happen to be on out local course a couple years ago. There  was a large

brawl taking place between two foursomes. Turns out it was over someones son

being discovered somewhere he wasn't supposed to be, shall we say !

I actually put my 3 iron (S58) in the bag a couple days ago. I like hitting that club. I keep trying

to tell myself to use hybrids, or even a 7 wood......but the 3 iron beckons. It's pretty tiny and

that's what makes it alluring. If I hit clankers with it then it would be easy to just leave it at

home. I don't use it much during a round but I generally hit satisfying shots with it when I do.

More importantly, I don't think it's cost me any strokes. 

 

I know it's cliche but it's true that looking down at that small head does have a way of making

you focus your mind. I think, and will admit age has something to do with it, that I have a hard

time maintaining my focus over an 18 hole round......or even 3 holes if I'm being honest. At times

I think about just grabbing my Rapture V2 irons that will help cover up my lapses in focus. 

 

On the other hand I think playing with the more demanding irons that force me to focus will

be better to help keep my mind sharp as the aging process relentlessly carries on.  I kind of

have the same mindset when sitting down at the piano. I can get lazy, and sloppy, and just

play things I already know.......or........I can keep pushing myself to learn new things, creating

new neural pathways. It's a continuous challenge to keep pushing yourself. It's easy to just

give in to the urge to just let your mind chill, especially when you are retired and, literally,

don't have to do much of anything if you don't want to.

2 grams or more of lead tape out on the toe will cure the hook problem especially if it is a peanut or a Adams OS hybrid. I have a Adams OS I hit pretty well but I put my V-Steel 9 wood back in because I hit it better. Selfishly I will admit I like looking at the V-Steel better at address. Any hybrid looks funky to me that is why I call them "little funkys".

I can still hit the long irons not as well or as high but still can. My problem being a feel and instinct player is swinging too hard because I know darn well I have to generate more swing speed to hit them. Last week in the shoot out was a prime example. The wind was up some and I was the "driver" of the bunch on my pick up team. Yep I had the 3 and 4 irons in and yes I pushed the issue too much. After 12 holes I started getting sore and stiff. In fact so bad I withdrew my wife and I from the afternoon Nine and Dine. Did manage with help from my cane and back brace to stumble the 26 steps up to the sound booth for Sunday services. Sat on my rear in my massaging chair until Wednesday. Hit about 15 whiffle balls in the yard off the mat and was ok. 

 

Went out to the course yesterday and talked to a friend who has a golf acamedy there. We both have similar backgrounds and go way way back to the old Space Coast Tour in Florida. We are the same age. We had a talk and he is also an old school feel and instinct player too but he does not teach that way. He said our minds are trying to do 24 year old stuff that our 64 year old bodies can no longer pull off. We were talking about my hurting last week. He brought up the point of torsional vibration transfer. Yep with steel shafts and believe it or not I play standard size Tour Wraps. You may not know it per say but that vibration does transfer through the whole body. He does know the extent of my injuries and my nerve damage and the vibrations are causing my back nerves to act up. He talked me into going back to the house and geting my TMs with the graphite shafts. He got me to swinging those as I watched and would not let me swing hard. Main thing I did was hit about 40 balls with ample breaks in between. I hit those irons pretty well and had no pain. He said he saw me on the range when I first got those irons and I remember he had asked what shafts were in them? He told me I was swinging them too fast and hard for what the shafts were designed for. He also pointed out him being a blade man himself that we were not as physically able to practice like we once did and we could not hit as consistant as we once did. In other words we need a little forgiveness. The jury is still out on me playing CBs with graphite even those are "players cavities". I told him I do not hurt my back playing my vintage rounds with steel and persimmon. He said that was easy. When out there playing vintage I am not competing and trying to beat someone and shooting at a score so I am not swinging hard. In my mind I am still a competive person. He also noted that my swing was always fast and violent something my old man had said 45 years ago. So basically for now I am in full old man mode and am trying the graphites again with the 7 & 9 woods thrown in. I had that talk with him because honestly I was thinking about giving up the game period and going fishing or buying an old hot rod and renting a place to work on it at.  I remembered my old man gave up the game around my age because of health issues and diminished distance. He stayed at the course and gave lessons etc but did not play.

Well you know all to well the cure for old age. I wake up every morning thankful to wake up "on the right side of the dirt" even if I am stiff and hurting.

 

On the warranty thing I just saw on the TV news the car warranty deals are some kind of scammer thing. Like I said a while back when I got educated I quit answering the phone if it is not displayed as someone on my caller list. Our scam spam calls have dropped in the last few weeks to darn near zilch. I can remember when I was still laid up and answering those calls and messing with people. I got one of those car warranty calls. You could tell right off ( even with my flying without wings state) that this girl was a bubblehead. I told her I was interested. She asked what kind of car. I told her a 1954 Studebaker Hawk. I could hear her typing furiously on her computer telling me hold on hold on. She asked me if I was sure? Yep I told her she told me sir I do not see that car listed was I sure of the make and model? I told here I was not a dumbarse but she was I knew the make and model of my car. I told her that she had no idea what she was selling after all she herself had asked me if the car was newer than 20 years old and I told her no but she had babbled on. She asked me then well how old is a 54 Studebaker Hawk? Even in my flying without wings state I could no longer take it and hung up. Geez if she was really that dumb I see a dim future for her unless she is a hottie and gets into the Adult Enterainment business.

Edit---- I did actually own a 54 Hawk that had already been made into a Modified dirt track car complete with a actual Studebaker V-8. It had ran competively around the SE dirt tracks in the late 50s early 60s. When I traded for it it had not been near a track in 20 years or so. I never raced it because under the current rules I had to run the Studebaker engine which parts in any case were rare and expensive. I think I traded some 55 Chevy parts for it. I ended up selling it to some guy who wanted to restore it and piddle with it since he knew the original owner and driver.

We've likely all read the CW on weight relative to green speed.  No right or wrong anser, use whatever weight and type that gives one confidence.  Never know what speed a green stimps at, an entirely subjective assessment that takes place on the first green.  They're either rolling quick or not so quick.  Don't have the luxury of changing putters unless I'm carrying two.  

 

A light weight bladey putter lacks consistency in my hands.  Not enough heft to keep the stroke  smooth, a narrow (visually) blade and I struggle to align the head to the line and keep it there.  Seems like I manipulate the clubhead to much.  And forget about any LW heel shafted putter.  All I do is pull the putt.  

 

Suppose I prefer a heavier weight mallet style putter for all conditions.  The Ping Sigma G Tyne H has been the primary "gamer" for several years now. Believe its now the longest primary putter I've ever used.   #7 type, heavy (370g), plumbers neck, insert, with a midsize "conventional" grip.  The latter contributes to the "feels" despite the heavier putter weight.   Seems to work better than anything else I've tried.  Fast or slow, lag putts or from close range, seems to have some "finesse" to it.  

 

Mostly this stuff is beyond my pay grade to offer anything beyond personal chatter.  Can still miss far to many putts.  But believe it's operator error 100% of the time.  Putting is such a mental thing anyways.  Don't think there's anything definitive one way or the other.  Use whatever feels right and gives one confidence.

That's what my WRX research turned up.  There was even mention of Burner Plus "C" heads in the postings I turned up suggesting that they came from the Senior Tour Van and explaining the differences to "B" heads which were all the rage back in the R9 days.  Apparently a "C" head is Tom Leman specs with conforming grooves as that was around the time of the rule change.  I have no idea if this is gospel or a hunting story.

 

The original set I got in 2018 were "C" heads; 6-PW and std lie with +1/2" which were my fitting specs for that particular model.  I found an AW the following year, also a "C" head at +1/2".  The new to me 5 iron is a "C" head, but std. length.  Undecided as to whether I will extend or not.  See how it hits for starters.  +1/2" is fairly insignificant when you get to the 5 iron if you think about it.  It's already 38.5" OTR.
