It comes down to credit card stuff and interest eating up paying down the balance as we wind things down. 

 

Playing music doesn't pay very well ... and we're pretty popular. 

 

Back when I was at NCSU, I was the lead columnist for our newspaper, The Technician. Journalism's been a thing I've loved most of my life and I was headed down that road a bit. (Til I wrote a particularly inflammatory article that got me summarily fired from that one AND my student spot on Raleigh's News & Observer. I'm really proud of that. "One of these days, I'm gonna teach you some tact." - My Friend&Nemesis) One of my articles, I scored an interview with a very famous local artist ... some of yall might very well know the name.

 

Dude was a total rockstar to 19 y/o ae and it was a blast talking to him and writing the article.

Been thinking a lot if I wanna keep on playing tunes or not. After TCK, I considered myself retired. F&D was an anomaly of a situation. 

 

We've kept the news of F&D rolling it down hidden from the scene but it drops in a few weeks. So Imma be getting hit up A LOT. 

 

I don't wanna play any boring punk rock which is surely what I'll soon be getting asked to do. Ms. ae has suggested I go do one of the Fremont St gigs - which would come with some good pay but I don't really want to put in the work. And I dunno how many times I can deal with playing Def Leppard covers. 

 

Oy. This might actually be the real retirement. Unless Slim Cessna needs a drummer. 

 

 

Man, that's the gig I want.

allen says he’s working at the ywca, handing out towels to women as they go into the showers. it’s only $5 per hour.

I retired from music for good when I was 58. Can't say I miss it that much. I had gotten to the point that if we didn't have at least 100 people there it wasn't that much fun. People just don't go out to bars and stay with the drinking laws around here. I do miss some of the big outdoor festivals we used to do though. We used to do one every year where we had 2500 on average. That was a cool gig.

There's bands that sold at platinum level and they cannot afford to tour.

 

Sam Ash Music is shutting down for good today and that says everything. It's an iconic music store. If you lived near NYC it was a pilgrimage to go there.

We are were talking about the TM classics, the R510 & R7 425. It got me to go on eBay. Bought a 425 out of Japan. Has the REAX shaft and all. Pretty mint too. Swung it yesterday, love it., I'm sticking it in bag for the last couple weeks I have of my golf season. Surgery at end of May ends that but this is a keeper and it will stay for a time. Great club.

It's almost like taxi cab confessions here.  I have been to Vegas, I certainly don't fear Las Vegas and apparently by the weekly reminders to come to the casino for free, they don't fear me either.  I am not sure if Def Leppard is your lane, but being on Fremont might be a pretty good gig if you can inject some life into them beyond hairband stuff, and I would think you could have some influence.

 

Now for the confession.  Wife and daughter went to TayTay last March (I think), and one of the nights we were wandering Fremont (as I am apt to do) and she was quite taken by Alter Ego.  She was impressed with their musician ship, and while she did say the lead singer wasn't "hot" in a 22 year old way, she did say he was really good and charismatic.  She couldn't figure out why they were playing for free.  Anyway, they came up again in conversation a few weeks later, and weird... we were there again without her, per usual, and yes, we did buy an Alter Ego tee shirt for her.

 

I have seen some of the old time headliners down there on the street, and I have to admit, I would enjoy walking down the street and seeing @aenemated banging away on the drums.

 

Which band do you think would come calling first?

 

EDIT: I should add I am a merch hound.  Since Spotify I feel like unless you are uber popular they aren't making a thing making people happy and merch is one way to get them a little more money so I can continue to enjoy them doing what they do.

spent most of my high school days closeted in my room learning to play. my father was a full-time musician, so i guess i just had some dna passed on. i never considered myself very good. i'm self deprecating by nature anyway, but i ended up being the guitarist of choice for some bands and people wanting someone who could play.

 

all i remember about this girl in high school was she must have been a pretty good singer or i wouldn't have played.

 

 

 

i didn't like the band thing much. i wanted to melt into the background and play, everyone else wanted to be mick jagger. most sounded like cats in heat and nails on chalkboards singing and playing.

 

didn't play at all after high school for about 10 years, then picked it up again to write some songs with a guy who was a much better writer than i was, and had a good voice. I finally had to learn to sing some. some are naturals, i was not. it was like learning a new instrument. a hobby/outlet for me, but a wide-eyed dream of stardom for him. wrote some reasonably good tunes and some good demos. he played the roots pretty well, but i played guitars, drums, bass, etc.

 

he crashed and burned like a meteor from being so intense and driven. he couldn't handle the rejection from a&r people.

 

didn't touch a guitar again for about 10 years. there's a pattern developing here.

 

needed something to do in japan and there were several 'live houses' as they're called near my place. bars with a stage. different people/groups playing every night. i got the bug again. just something do to - a hobby.

 

live houses were so easy to play at. all you had to do was show up with your instrument. no lugging stuff around. they had a p.a., mics, drums, amps, keyboard. imagine if you only had to carry drumsticks, aen?

 

after getting a couple guitars, exercising my chops, learning new stuff, i played a couple of sets at a nice place close by one night/weekend. being the gaijin, you're treated with some reverence because you can pronounce the words of songs correctly. 🙂

 

it didn't hurt either that the place was filled girls.

 

then, the world famous charlie shows up one night. charlie was the king of booking live house musicians all over eastern japan. he played drums and put together different people to play the highest paying gigs himself and was agent extraordinaire.

 

before i know it, i'm playing more times per week than i want. played some cool gigs either alone or with some great musicians. played a day long outdoor festival with close to 20,000 people. just me onstage for an acoustic set. started off rough, but made a few birdies near the end. i'll call it invigorating and leave it at that. never dreamed i would ever, ever do that.

 

but, it was feeling like a job. yuck. i had one of those already. burned out again. i think the last time i picked up a guitar was 1995. skipped the 2005, 2015 renewal period and creeping up on the 2025 one.

 

hmmm, maybe i'll go to guitar center?

Damn. I dont like being in this position. 

Had a buddy in college get in a bit of trouble, so assisted with bail with agreement he would pay back in two weeks, told him if any issues, just communicate as friends should. One month later and nada word- got word dude had a new jet ski at local lake, so while he was on lake, got bud that was a park ranger to “impound” trailer for being parked illegally at ramp area, which actually was in restricted area. “Fine” to get it back was exactly amount he owed me 😂

Nothing was ever said about it further and guy dropped out of university shortly afterwards.  Fast forward a few years and same guy reaches out wanting help moving out from bad situation with his soon to be ex-wife, told him that didn’t have good place to legally park my truck to help, so he might want to reach out to someone else and the lightbulb 💡 finally went off.

Lots of cats on Sunset, right?. Hung out at The Rainbow for one weekend, partied with drummer from Boston, met Jason Bonham, and peed next to Tommy Lee, lol. YT has a channel about Sunset Studio, it's one of my favorites. NYC had it going on too. Talent everywhere and playing everywhere. Two great music towns in that time. I had fun, wish it went better but hey it's R&R.

Im self taught (guitar) and played in bluegrass bands growing up. If you know much about traditional bluegrass (this is long before David Grisman et al) you’ll know it’s mainly G, C and D, with an occ F or Am thrown in. Lots of bass runs. I learned to take solo licks but nothing resembling the complexity of my guitar hero’s or prob many here.  Finally bought my first good guitar at Mandolin Bros in 1977 ish, then like an idiot took it on an extended 6 mos trip to Europe. It was a herringbone D28 Martin with a few blems and a good deal. Stuck “See Arkansas First” and “Fly Freddie Laker” (anyone here remember that?) stickers on the case. Still have the guitar and stickers are intact.
 

You haven’t lived until you schlep a guitar in plastic case across countless trains and hostels. I played on street corners of countries from Ireland to Sweden to Greece.  I even occ made enough change for beer money but learned how to branch out and develop new licks and styles.  Fingerstyle, jazz, bossa nova/samba….  A buddy with a Gibson E335 taught me how to bend strings beginning the next phase. 
 

Somewhere along the line I started collecting electric guitars and amps. I was in love (still am) with classic tube amps and various combinations of single coil or humbucker pickups. Many here I’m sure can sympathize how addictive this can get. And fiddles and mandolins.  Electric one too as I wanted to sound like Johnny Gimble.  A few years ago, when I finally came to my senses I surveyed the stash and realized I had an obscene and embarrassing amount of musical instruments, many of which I never used.  So started selling most of them, and gave a few to my kids. Meanwhile I’ve switched from building boats to guitars so hopefully I can somehow manage to sell or give them away and not start all over. 
 

Music is a big part of my life. Can’t imaging being without it.

I lived just below the Rainbow off Doheny for about 5 years - was there quite frequently! 

 

My favorite spot was The Baked Potato in Studio City. 

 

About a year or two after I moved to Hollywood, was meeting some pals for drinks in Atwater and stopped at the 7-11 at Hollywood and Taft to pick up some smokes. Tall dude with long hair was in front of me in line and I didn't think much of it till it hit ... "Dude, that's Danny freakin Carey." I was like "I gotta say SOMETHING" ... I mean, this is one of my drummist gods, right?

 

Said something like "Uh, hey man, just wanted to thank you for the music. I'm a drummer as well and you've just been a huge influence on my playing for years. So, ya know, thank you." 

 

He was all "Appreciate that, man! You should come to the Baked Potato on Mondays. We do an open mic jam." 

 

So I started rolling up. Got to know Dan and VOLTO! ... met Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dweezil Zappa ... remember one night after Dan had just tore the stage apart, my pal John Ziegler was like "Dude! Go up and play!" Was like "Are you outta your mind?! I'm not following that guy - I'll just get booed outta here!" 😂

 

I know I poop on LA a lot but man, I had a blast there.

Great music scenes are the big ponds where you see what talent you're swimming up against. Maybe Nashville is still that way, NYC not as bright, don't know about LA. Amazing how in a few decades it changed. We had it pretty good at one time.

That 425TP is an all time great IMO. Sweet stick, just perfect optics, sound, feel. I played some really good golf in those days.
