Not a great way to end the season, but absolute certainty that those Speedblade irons aren't for me in any way shape or form.  I guess that much is good to have reached a decision on.

A perfect autumn afternoon. Sweetgum and Sugar Maples are turning red, and today was

mid 60's. sunny and very little wind. I have no clue what score i shot. It was so nice out that it really didn't matter . I  was able to play on a beautiful day and was content with the hitting

and putting.  Hope most of you guys were able to get some good weather !

Planck time? Wow, I haven't heard that in a while! I had what was referred to as a "nuclear option" in my undergraduate degree. Basically a minor in nuclear engineering. I still calculate my driving time to the store in zeptoseconds...

Planck time is ironically equivalent to my attention span while watching the news -- 10^-43 seconds. Isn't it great that we can use superscript here? What a site.

 

And I wholeheartedly think the Autumn is best time for golf.

 

Is there nothing better than a crisp early morning with some dew and leaves on the practice tee? Your footprints make a trail to your spot. You empty your bag or bucket, and you hear the strangely comforting sound of golf balls colliding into a pile, telling you that all is right in the world.

 

You're about to take a short hiatus from the nonsense of the real world, even if it is just for a few hours, to enjoy the best damn game ever invented.

Yeah.  Finding balls was a problem.  The sun angle at this time of year makes it challenging to follow the ball flight.  Something I'm normally pretty good at.  Didn't help that I was skewing them all over the place.  Had a couple instances that I had no idea where the ball went after it was struck.  No matter, was into the hodgepodge of balls left in the bag, wasn't using my primos.  Left four for someone else to find.

Getting an overwhelming vibe that I'd like to return to having but one set of golf clubs to play.  Liquidate everything else.  Reach a determination for a viable "old guy" kit for my pedestrian game and call it good.  This is what it is for the remainder of my golf playing days.  Think it's doable.

Yeah as much as I relish my old stuff I am getting to think I will be thinning down the heard some or at least to two sets. I absolutely have too much stuff and we are contlemplating moving. It would I conservatively estimate at least a 28 ft box truck just to move my golf clubs and tools. I have relished myself to my "old Mans" set ( see signature) to just be able to play. Like you I guess what is in the signature will be for the remainder of my playing days too. Even though I can hold my own against people my age my golf game will never be what it once was. But I can have fun still playing like I do.

Indeed.  It has to be the shafts.  They're just dead for me.  They have had bits of a year and a half to prove themselves, but to no avail.  Best be rid of them.

 

On the plus side of the leger, the RBZ driver and Tight Lies fairways acquitted themselves pretty well.  Had some excellent results with those clubs.  A little bit lighter and a little bit softer has some definite advantages in the long end of the bag.  Kuro Kage shafts seem to suit this duffer, now to seek out a set of irons so equipped.  That might be a future project.

 I am just about where Fella is as far as clubs and golfing is concerned.  I still have a set of

Adams OS12 or something like that...not sure of the numbers.  And I am so happy to know that i am not the only one that can hit a tee shot, and being honest to myself, say "I dont have a ffning clue where that one went." Have been pleasantly  surprised to find some in the fairway, and others traveled to that golf ball BLACK HOLE .  Got 9 in today. Fantastic day, weather wise. I'll leave it at that !

I’ve played a lot of golf, as many of you have.

 

Please don’t take this the wrong way, because it is not bragging. I’ve been lucky to play with and know some great golfers. I’ve played with Moe Norman, some of the best pros and and some pretty famous people, from Joe Namath to Evel Knevel to Jackie Gleason, Dean Martin, to well, a bunch of people. It’s just a fluke of timing.

 

But, one of the most enjoyable rounds I’ve ever played is with someone I met though GolfWRX. His screen name was HoldenCornfield and he’s gone from here now. He was smart, clever and I was on a business trip, and I was going though Atlanta, so I stayed a couple days so I could play a round with him.

 

I think when I die, I’m going to have to change planes in Atlanta.

 

My lonely wife was still alive then and she was so great about tolerating me. We were traveling back and forth from Japan to the US then.

 

Good old Holden picked me up at the hotel in a Mustang convertible (I think it was blue) and off we went to his private club. He gave me a present of a Wilson persimmon 3-wood with an aluminum insert. What a guy.

 

We played with a friend of his and his young teenage son. It was a brilliant, clear, wonderful summer day in the Atlanta suburbs. Both of us played some old, 1960’s (or 1970’s?) irons and woods. What gentlemen these guys were.

 

I spent a few years in Atlanta and I truly appreciate the good, old fashioned, gentile spirit of the south and people in the south. There is a special sense of politeness and generosity in the south.

 

Anyway, it was great day. The last hole was a very long and difficult par 4 with a forced carry to an island green. I hit a pretty damn good towering 4-iron (a 6 or 7-iron with modern clubs) to about 15 feet and was the only one to not put it in the water.

 

When we finished, I remember digging in my bag and giving the young teenager a whole slew of Japanese money out of my bag - from 1 yen up through 10,000 yen (about US$100) because he was fascinated about Japan. Holden told me later that he was so appreciative and even more fascinated. I think that even today, that young man is using one of those coins as a ball mark.

 

There’s something different about golfers. It’s a common bond, a thread that runs through golfers, that I don’t think exists in other sports or activities.

 

Holden is gone. I don’t know where he went. I hope he’s healthy because I know he had cancer a few years before we met.

 

I would love to meet some of you and enjoy a round of golf and laughs. I keep threatening to take a trip around the country just to play some golf. I’m getting to be an old geezer now, but maybe I’ll do it this spring. If any of you ever get to Arizona, look me up.

Thanks man yeah I do not take it seriously anymore but still have the drive to win in the little things like our Shootout and 9 and Dine. 

 

Like you I have played with some famous people because my old man ran one of the daily fee public courses. I guess in some circles they were famous mostly some of the Old School NASCAR drivers and professional wrestlers. I did go to Vegas twice and played in 2 of those big Vegas shootouts-of course I had backers. Played the minis with some up and comers that did well on the PGA Tour and a couple today are on the Champions Tour and some are retired. Have met quite a few PGA Stars back in the day because my old man did play the Tour some himself back right before WW2 and after. 

 

As far as WRX I have only met one in person that was Old School Rocker ( Randy) . He came up here about 4 years ago now. We piddled around the shop with me and we went and ate. He is the one who titled me "The Unofficial Mayor of The Garden City Pancake House" which my friend the owner loves. I have not heard from Randy in quite a few years now so do not know his status hope he is all right. Now on the other site I frequent I have met and played golf with several members, Had one member from there come up from Georgia just to meet me and mess around the shop. But I have had fun playing golf and chatting with those guys. August Golf ( Augie) and I have never met face to face but we keep up with each other Via phone and we are on 2 of the FB persimmon and collector sites

 

When I joined the course I am at now it opened up a whole new world of fun for me. I was really having fun before my accident and had semi retired to 2 days a week and even played 9 on those days. On days off I would walk a 5 hole spread with a 5 club set up go home and eat breakdfast then return in the afternoons and play 18 with some of  my buds. I had actually lost about 20 Lbs without even trying. Yep I was having the most fun in golf I had ever had and had somewhat gotten the old edge back on my game. Then the accident and it set me back to say the least in both golf and life- It has been a long road but I am coming around again.

 

Was quite proud of myself yesterday-- It was in the 70s Sunny and no wind. I went out to practice and hit like 65 balls which normally I only hit 30 or so. Went and worked on the short game about an hour. One of my fellow members that has played with me ( and my wife) on Scramble teams and in the Nine and Dine came up. He is around 75 yoa and had not been playing much due to the weather--- He wanted to play 9 so I told him I would give it a whirl. Now the course was crowded and we met up with another guy who is lives here now and is a Native from up the road about 50 miles. It was slow but we had a blast. Main thing was I did not stiffen up or hurt and had not done any type of meds since I had taken some Ibprofen early yesterday morning. I did try to push the issue on the driver some and got wild on a couple holes because I was feeling great but I toned the throttle back down and started placing it where I wanted it. Did some experimenting since we were laughing it up and not keeping score. Tried the new 25* hybrid on the range and in play yesterday and it performed well. It stays in the bag for now. When I got hurt we had a pretty formidable scramble team but that team has had some changes. Most of the time now I show up and get a pick up scramble team. Actually our Pro told me that they were fixing to split us up because we won too much right before my accident. Well after yesterday I think we are off to a start of a great Scramble team. The one guy we met yesterday still plays an old Bertha driver and fairways and is long and straight hits this little baby draw and controls it. He actually eagled our #4 Par 5 hole from the green tees ( Super Senior over 70) Driver 5 wood to 2 ft---- He like the other guy is a good putter and we educated him on the nuances of our greens. Main thing I am feeling good in fact great and if it was daylight now I would not hesitate to hit balls or play-- We do have the 9 and dine this afternoon and my wife and I are playing. Yep I am having fun and relishing it

@Soloman1  I remember Holden Cornfield from the Classic section.  Real classic club aficionado.   Likely Stu and Sco remember him as well.  He always read as being one of the good guys, engaging with his postings and banter.   We exchanged some PM's once, on a subject that I don't remember.  Thanks for sharing your story.  Brought a smile to my face.  Hoping HC is getting on with life OK.  IIRC, became a new father again a bit latter on in life.

Holden as I remember him was really knowledgble on classic clubs especially MacGregor but knew old clubs in general very well---- Loved his Avatar with the guy with all the band aids on his fact stating " I cut myself shaving" always got a kick out of that.

HC's user name was a slight modification of the iconic fictional character Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye.  At least that's what I always figured it to be.  

 

Yeah, always think of his avatar as well.  That was a pic of the Jack Nicholson character, Jake Gittes, from the classic movie "Chinatown".  After his nose had been carved up a bit by the henchman character (Roman Polanski).  

 

Chinatown remains one of my top 10 GOAT movies.

I remember Holden too.  I also had conversations offline with him.  He was very supportive of anyone willing to give classic/vintage golf a go, no matter how you chose to play it.

 

I remember him chronicling the restoration he did of a set of late 40's Spalding persimmons that he finished in white with red insert.  I don't recall if they were a one off or an actual rip on the MacGregor WW series woods.  Pretty cool nonetheless!

 

He was definitely one of the good guys.  Too bad so many have left us.  I hope that they're all doing well. 🏌️‍♂️

Played the 9 and dine yesterday--- Had a lot of no shows including the couple that was supposed to play with us. We did the alternate shot thing and we shot even par on our front side which was the most difficult side. But then again we only had enough teams for the front side something like only 12 teams. But it was fun anyhow, We played behind some fellow members and had a blast. We ended up tied for 3rd which is not bad considering 2 teams tied for 1st at -1. It was kinda slow but not bad. Sometimes I did not hit my alternate drive or second because I saw no way I could better us and let the wife hit the alternate shots most of the time to give her practice. 

The food as usual was excellent and as always a great value for the money--- Now understandably so they did have to go up on the price of only $5 for each player. One of the owners was dissapointed about the low turn out but it is that time of the year. A lot of the permanant residents from up North travel back to see Grandkids etc for Thanksgiving. I also told him tongue and cheek that some probably did not play due to the slight price increase. He told me seriously that I may be correct on the price increase because some of these retirees will talk about how much they sold their house for up North but they are so tight they squeak. I also told him well you know gas is high and they are traveling back up North to see the kids. They did schedule another one for Dec 1st so we will see. 

LOL did have a group of hobble and gobble people behind us. Those are the ones who will rush to play and get in to eat and get in their eyes the best seats. We had a group of antiques behind us like that. They had started on #9 where we started as the second team on #1--- Yeah they came blasting up our butts on #2 and we could not go anywhere we had 2 groups in front of us. Those are the type that will get a ball on the green and not putt it just pick up and write a score. They are not going to win anyhow and everyone knows it. I watched them when we were finished on #3 and waiting and that is exactly what they done. They hit into us on #5 a par 3 as we walked off the green and the bad side of Stu came out. I picked up the ball and took it to them and they had the Deer in the headlights look. I told them if they did it again I would sail it back at them hot. I also told them why rush? The old folks home would let them back in after dark I would call to make sure. I think they picked up on #7 because they ran wide open up the fairway to the clubhouse. LOL when we got in they were waiting because the food was not ready and they were complaining. I heard them and shot back well if you were in that big of a rush you should have skipped the golf and went to a seafood buffet or Mickey dees. That was after the owner told me they accused us of cheating because we hit some second shots. The owner told me he had to explain that we were after all a two person team and were entitled to do just that. And he said he got the Deer in the headlights look too and we had a big laugh. Some people.

All in all big fun and I got to try the little 5 hybrid (25*) I built some more. I like it and hit it well but do not honestly see where distance wise it fits in for my game. For now I think I am pulling it out and putting it back for when I get older. An no I am up early because we came home about 6:00 and I was in bed by 7:00. I was tired from the last 2 days. But I do not have any pain or stiffness and will more than likely return to bed in a couple of hours or maybe not. Hey I am retired and can do what I darn well please and have nothing scheduled for today.

 

Another thing on the slack field may have been this--- 3 weeks ago when I had to pull out because I hurt my back in the Shootout the had like a 32 34 team field and from what some of the members told me afterwards was it took close to 3 hrs to play 9 and they were not going to participate any more. The owner admitted they had overbooked the event that week and had would have to start limiting the fields again with members getting priority. Usually they had to do that in past years with the Canadians down but it usually balances out because most of the members and local supporters are traveling for the holidays.

Ha.  Been perusing something Ping also .  Used, bouncy, easy to play, G series something.  Aren't they suppose to be good for high cap scufflers to wield?  That's the chatter.  Automatic for the People.  IDK.  Only require 6 of them.  "It's the shaft, stupid" anyways.   Risky business.

Supposedly.  At least I have an idea of what I'm getting into provided I steer clear of K series.  The funny part is that it was a set of i25's that sent me down this rabbit hole chasing a better playing iron.

 

There's nothing wrong with my Burner Plus irons.  I hit them well and have confidence in them.  It's just on occasion that I'd like to have a set with graphite shafts that would be a bit easier on my back, especially if I start playing 18's more often.  Like you, I gravitate towards G series for the obvious reasons.  The TFC 189 shafts that were in the i25's fit me well, so that's the starting point.  Not too concerned about color code.  Black, blue or yellow will work.

 

[Added] Just did Ping's web fit application and interesting results.  Blue color code this time around and a G series iron with either XP95's in R300 or Recoil ES in F3.  Had a line on a set of Ping G's w/graphite R, 5-UW at a much better price than other G series irons.  I guess there is an issue with the weights falling out of this model.

Have you ever considered looking at the OG King Cobra Oversize? Some came with Autoclave and other brands of graphite and were so easy to hit without looking like a door stop (compared to today's offerings.) They were the "anti-PING" when the EYE 2's and Zings were all the rage. I have a guy at my club who's gamed the same set of irons for at least 30 years and he plays at least twice a week. He also has another set just like them for when he finally wears these out LOL.

Sco and Fella, you may know this already, and if so, sorry for posting something you already

know. There is a dividing line on the ping G series irons. You have noticed, I'm sure that after

the G30 irons, Ping did not follow with the G35,  G40, etc. but instead went to just a G and

then G400, G410 and now G425. There is a reason for this.

 

The G was the first G series iron with a ferrule; which I think most like. But the biggest change

was Ping ending the solid reinforced face and replacing it with a thin flexing face, the so called

trampoline face. The G30 was the last with the solid, wonderful, and quiet feel the G series

was known for. From the G forward the feel has been described by many as harsh and the

sound as loud. It was all about the chase for distance. Ping had to keep up with the others and

thus why the G series was redesigned.

 

In full disclosure, I have not hit any of these newer G series irons myself. The newest I have hit 

are the G25s. So far, I have had no interest in the newer ones. There are plenty of threads on

WRX about these newer G series irons and I have probably read nearly all of them. The take I

get from these threads is these irons do go further; though some is from loft jacking, and the

feel is harsh and the sound loud. Some are good with it and some are not.

 

Like me, I know you guys tend to buy clubs online without hitting them first. I just wanted to

post this info in case you didn't know. A well known G aficionado here at WRX, Nessism, buys

every new iteration of the Gs when they come out and he loves and plays with the newer

ones. Another WRXer, mtljeff, describes the sound of his G410s as like hearing a gunshot.

I think he's playing with something else now.

I haven't heard door stop until now, lol.  Usually hear skillet or airport runway or just plain clunky.

Of course, Ping irons are famously ugly, or were famously ugly. Modern Pings are too pretty and

petite. 

 

Anyway, some pics of my S58 8 iron (circa 2006) next to my Rapture V2 8 iron (circa 2009). I'm

not sure what it says about me that I play both sets........maybe crappy golfer, haha.

And yep old guys like that are hard to beat. I got a bud of mine here that is a member of a neighboring course, His name is Earl and we call him Earl the Pearl--- He has played Eye 2s ever since they came out and he buys any Eye2s he can find in fact he bought my last set of Scrapyard finds. LOL he is now 80 yoa and plays everyday weather permitting and still hits a TM Quad driver. I can tell you he is tough before I was hurt he was tough for me to beat with him hitting from the Super Senior tees and me from the senior tees. That was before my accident. He just has an overall great game not that long anymore but straight and knows how to golf his ball. 

 

On the Ping deal I went out while ago and slipped my Zing LW in the bag. Seems our course is rebuilding the traps and I had not paid attention because I had not been in one for ages. On our 2nd hole I was trying to hit a cute float cut into a tucked pin and dumped it in that trap not once but twice. Yeah had my Tin Cup Moment. Well The PM wedge will not cut it out of sand the way I have the sole ground. Told the wife I wished I had either my Zing or 588 60* We took a bogey there and it more than likely cost us. So the Zing is back in the bag. I also hit balls and measured distances this AM and like I said I hit the little 25* hybrid good but can not use it for distance gaps for my game. I can actually choke down on the 7 wood and do that gap fine. So actually I have 13 clubs in the bag now

They finally put in senior tees at the RTJ I play at. Before it was the whites at around 6,000 yards

or the ladies at around 4,000/4500. Of course, there are longer tees going up to 7700-7800 yards,

which are way too long for us geezers. The other day we played the Legislator Course from the

new senior tees; which are gold. I think the card yardage from the gold was 5426.  I have mixed

feelings about moving up.

Have no issue with playing at ~5500 yards.  We play whatever tees that places us between 5500 - 5800.  Seems about right for the relative skill sets for all of us.  Some courses it's the forward tees, others from the whites.  We rarely play an unknown tract, so we know which tees are appropriate.  We can still botch it around just fine at the shorter lengths.  Longer than 6000 yards becomes a slog.
