China can just mandate this stuff if they like. As dense as the population centers are there, and is cheap as labor/pay is there, makes sense to just have millions of robotaxis roaming around than have everyone own a car.

And they don't care if some folks get run over or anything 😂

I had a similar experience. I'd gone to the Genesis Invitational in mid February (meandering through a big, international crowd) and about a week later; I was the absolute sickest I've ever in my life been. Like, out of work for a week, couldn't get out of bed sick. Had to call in my ex-wife to come help with my pups. Didn't get back to normal for a couple weeks.

Then, ya know, THAT happened. Never got tested for it but I'm convinced I had it.

Yeah, sounds like we were both unfortunate trendsetters. 😂

Doh!

Well the flip side

Over 40,000 deaths in car crashes in the US last year. Millions of accidents

People texting, drunk, stoned, can’t see, too old, exhausted truckers.

Pick your poison.

Amazing characters and rivalries. Ones team you had to worry about

The Big Red Machine!

Look at this lineup, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, Ken Griffey Sr.

you might not know the rest of the guys, but they were all really good! They swept the Yankees in 76 World Series

Trying to remember B. I think Cesar Geronimo might have been the SS (or maybe an OF). I think George Foster played OF. At first, Tony Perez? Just can’t finish the lineup off the top of my head.

Growing up a Dodger fan, my imaginary games were always between the two. Hated the Reds (but loved Johnny Bench)!

Think Dave Concepcion was at short! And Foster was a beast, hit over 50 HRs then the Mets got him and he stunk🤣

Ok Dodgers, off the top of my head….

93% of all clothing sold in the usa is made overseas. “performance textiles” use shredded old water bottles. plastic clothes.

42% of americans with an ev say they will not buy another one.

last year was the hottest on record since 1850. every month since june 2023 has been hotter than last year. now is probably the coolest you’ll ever know.

combining the prediction models used 20 years ago into a mean and comparing to data shows the mean prediction was accurate.

americans owe $1.2 trillion in car loan debt. who would have thought people would pay higher interest rates than mortgages for a depreciating asset that costs more than a house 40 years ago? but, people like new cars. 🙂

Yep most of the golf bag companies use what they call "rip stop" material especially in carry and stand bags. That is just a fancy name for material made from recycled plastic bottles

Yep Tommy Helms was on that team in that era. He was from Charlotte and the old man knew him well.

Back when I was a kid I was a Braves fan when frankly they sucked. I got to be a fan because this old guy the old man knew was a big Braves fan. We also had a team in Charlotte called the Hornets (no not the basketball team either) that was a farm team for the Braves.  We used to go to all of the Hornets games back in the day at Clark Griffith Park which was a wooden stadium. Sadly that place burned down in like 77 or 78. I was in Florida at the time but it made the papers and TV broadcasts down there.

charging your ev with residential power (120v, but is usually lower) won't give you full charge overnight. maybe 1/2 to 3/4.

so you have the added expense of having to set up 240v.

and the battery degrades, so you lose about 1/3 charging capacity (range) after 4 years. good luck getting a dealer to buy or take it in trade.

it's turning into something like fusion power. it's the dream, but always 40 years away.

Dodgers went Garvey, Lopes, Bill Russell, Ron Cey around the infield. Steve Yeager catching.

Dusty Baker, Glenn Burke, Reggie Smith, and Rick Monday in the OF

Bet we could talk baseball for a long time. Now that I don’t do fantasy baseball (and with all the injuries) I barely know any of current players.

I hear you on traffic moving on ways a robot couldn’t.

But besides the fact that the tech, in time, can easily accommodate human decision-making at an even faster speed,

I could see China (or in the US for that matter)  just removing all humans from driving in certain cities/ parts of cities and only having robotaxis that run around on a grid, are all coordinated, and people just get in and out of.

Thats far more efficient than human taxis or even allowing people to drive in large cities.

That's the problem. The hardware to actually do this in a meaningful way now is prohibitively expensive. And massive. And requires an extraordinary amount of power.

aen! Was waiting for you to drop some dat knowledge

I agree, mixing autonomous cars with human drivers is too complex. I’m surprised that two US cities already have them out there

Im looking at NYC and thinking there’s basically no reason for anyone besides cops and EMS to be driving around. It’s insane. And a city with just robotaxis that are all part of the same “machine”/grid would be best.

But the cost and power required is reduced drastically over time right?

@Soloman1 take a trip to Lima, Peru. absolutely only rule is to be 1st. I thought Sao Paulo was bad but it is a cake walk compared to Lima. I will drive anywhere except Lima and as you say close my eyes in the Taxi, the cars are held together with chicken wire and tape. The only thing on any car there that works perfectly is the horn and they use them non stop..

i saw a clip once of an intersection of 4 lane roads. i don’t know where it was, maybe usa or europe. traffic was backed up all directions until the traffic lights went out.

then the traffic jam went away and cars moved through the intersection like a big dance. no accidents.

I have not been to India or Manila or Bangkok, but Jamaica has the wildest, most aggressive traffic patterns I’ve encountered.  Kingston, and even moreso going over the mountains man I will NEVER drive that again for love or money.

Also have not been in Cairo…..have been told that is the wildest traffic on 🌍

It’s not one vs the other

Computer is simply a tool that we use to do things that we can’t do, like a hammer 🔨  ; )

“Without the computers on board the Apollo spacecraft, there would have been no moon landing, no triumphant first step, no high-water mark for human space travel. A pilot could never have navigated the way to the moon, as if a spaceship were simply a more powerful airplane. The calculations required to make in-flight adjustments and the complexity of the thrust controls outstripped human capacities.”

agree with you completely.

the atlantic is a great magazine, isn’t it?

they do what we tell them to do and what we anticipate they will need to do. it decides using the process we tell it to use.

the speed and precision of arithmetic functions are wonderful. sometimes we humans forget to carry the 1.

the computer wasn’t at fault during the final descent, it was the failure to anticipate some variables and measurements within the programming.

And there's the biggest challenge!

For about half my career; I was really only building server side systems. It's pretty easy because it's largely predictable and easy to bail out. If the input isn't what you're expecting - no problem; just throw an error and don't do anything else. Otherwise, do your routine and return the result and it's someone else's problem at that point. Point being; super easy to minimize variables.

Then at some point I made the switch to dealing with human interaction. That was dumb of me.
