SkySports coverage on their dedicated The Open channel has been great this week.

Loads of official films from the 70's 80's and 90's plus the Open Zone where they have had players hitting all types of shots with Pro Tracer!

Fowler, Finau, Grace, Schwartzel, Westwood, all showing how they hit low, high, shape shots etc Brilliant!

is it free?

As we have some here who'll be THERE, can someone please tell me about the Troon public courses I was thinking of playing adjacent to the Royal?

My trip will be focused on munis rather than the more "royal" clubs.

The other courses in Ayr area courses I'm thinking of playing are Girvan and Dundonald.

Thanks.

Is the rough here long and thick like it was at the Scottish Open?

I was there yesterday and it is! I was also at the Scottish Open on Saturday and the fairways at Troon are an lot narrower than those at Castle Stuart. I couldn't believe how tight holes like 6 and 9 were.

I was just thinking, he wasn't done much this year but then he didn't do much last year apart from winning The Open.

Personally though, I can't see him being a contender. The back 9 into the wind is going to be brutal and he is going to be stuck playing a lot of long irons for his second shots. He is 101st in proximity to the hole from 175 to 200 yards and 90th from 200 yards to 225. That isn't going to get it done this week.

I've played Troon Darley and Lochgreen which are two of the Municiples at Troon. They're fine. Nothing to shout about, but the Green complexes on the Darley Course are very good, but the overall course conditions reflect that they're municiples. Personally, I would rather play Dundonald or Glasgow Gailes and try and get twilight tee off times where the prices are less. I don't think you would regret paying that little bit extra for the privilege. They're a definite step up in quality and enjoyment over the Munis'.

If price is also a factor, then somewhere like a last minute (within 4 days) tee time at Prestwick St Nicholas is also worth considering over the Munis'.

Enjoy!

Thank you, UKJay...from this Jay here in Florida.....

I'll definitely look into St. Nicholas. I had planned on taking a "taylored" pair of heavy microfiber slacks for just such a course. :)

Lot of euros have the wind in their sails. Wood, Noren, Knox, Cabrera Bello, Colsaerts, Sullivan, Luiten, Molinari,..

All dark horses and potentially 1st timer ! That should be an interesting leaderboard unfolding

For the last 20 years our annual golf trip has always been to the Municipal courses of http://www.golfsouthayrshire.com and for value for money the courses are unbeatable. In Troon, Darly and Lochgreen are just excellent, the fairways are great and the greens are just superb. Darley is tougher and my favorite course, it is a touch scruffy around the 3&4th hole close the school, you can score well on the front and the back is harder, the 12 is my favorite. Lochgreen is a longer course par 74 I think, but it is wider and runs parralell to Royal Troon. The front 9 at Girvan are great the back 9 are poor. Belleisle is a fantastic parkland course in ayr and is always in immaculate condition. Also in Ayr is Seafield which is part links and part parkland and Maybole which is a funky little course. For value for money these 6 course are simply unbeatable. You can buy a 3 day pass for next to nothing, and spend the rest of your money in the great pubs of Prestwick (much better drinking than Ayr).

If you want to step it up a notch then Barassie http://www.kbgc.co.uk/ and Prestwick http://www.prestwickgc.co.uk/ are just out of this world. But I would really recommend the muni's

also check out teetimes.co.uk which has some great bargains in the area

Thank you for the comments on Troon's munis.....

It amazes me that people can play a half-dozen rounds in a week in Scotland and I'll be lucky to get in 8 rounds in 3 weeks.

With all the sightseeing I want to do from Durness at the far north, to Golspie and Aviermore in the Highlands and Glasgow and Edinburgh to the southeast/south west coasts there's so much to see and I don't know if I'll get another chance.

I'd planned on playing munis throughout because that's what I play here and bringing back memories of those tracks will fit comfortably in my bag. Again....thanks.

Vijay hit one of his drives from the 7 tee on the 8 green and ended up hitting Dawson's caddie on the head. It looked pretty serious. It took about 20-30 mins for the medics to get him out of there.

Troon is quite tight and the rough is very thick. 11 looks tough, blind tee shot with on right and thick gorse ob the left.

BTW Garcia is absolutely flushing it. He going to be running away with it come Sunday.

Would love to see Sergio win this one. A major win for him has been past due since the lip out at Carnoustie.

Haven't seen his name listed down for a practice round yet! The Open App is pretty accurate and has most of the players that are out and there has been no sign of him. I imagine that he will play and obviously there is no chance that he will win but pretty shoddy to not even bother with a practice round. Amazes me that people still want to watch this guy, he is a joke.

You can sign up to Sky Sports online for 7 days for under 10 pounds. In return you'll get over 50 hours of live Open coverage. That's less than 20p per hour. And if your one of those people who refuses to give any money to Rupert Murdoch he sold Sky off quite some time ago.
