Laser in the butt

I was in a golf shop where the instructor had a laser in the butt

of a an iron. There was a white piece of tape from the wall through

the ball and beyond to a target .

He said he uses it to work on his back swing.

The idea is when his arm is parallel to the ground and his wrists are

set properly the laser points at the line and as his shoulders turned

the laser light stays on the white tape.

 

Anyone ever used this before?

Yep - there's the move where you hold the club normally and try to get the laser pointing at the ball and then the other where you flip the club and hold it by the head-area and work on the takeaway by trying to follow the tape back behind the ball.

Yes my coach uses it for me to get my club a bit steeper in the backswing. If the laser points to far in front of the ball (face on direction) I am taking it back too flat.

 

 

You can also turn the club around and see whether you are taking back the club too much to the inside or outside.

 

I remember SwingByte is 'drawing' imaginary lasers coming out of the but and the head.

So, like everyone else, I was drawn to the thread title, but seemed intriguing so I went home and tried it (cut the butt off an old crap club and taped a laser pointer I happened to own into it). As simplistic as it is, I actually really like it. I've already been working on getting my plane a little steeper with my irons and this is a really easy way to make sure that I'm in the right position and not just guessing. So thanks for the new free drill.

I think Ledbetter sold on of these one time with a mat on the ground that you trace the lines with the laser

The lasers are interchangeable. You can remove it from one butt and insert it into another.

 

You might want to disinfect it before going into another butt however....

All obvious jokes aside...

 

Its essentially a home made "smart stick" ... which in my opinion, might be the only golf training aid WORTH spending money on.

 

Helps you 'trace' a straight plane line, and will immediately identify a takeaway that is too inside / outside and so forth. Furthermore, while turning, lifting, and going through your swing, the 'butt end' laser, OR the laser coming through the other end should be pointing at the line on the ground (ball / target line AKA base of your plane line).

 

It is really an excellent device. It lets you make adjustments in 'real time' during slow practice swings, and feel the new positions required to get the club on plane. If you spent time with one each day, you'd be SHOCKED at how much your swing improves.

 

I bought two lasers and a 36" dowel and made my own --- I eventually just spent the money and got the smart stick ... it really is a great training aid.
