Patrick Reed's new Callaway Apex MB irons: 2017 Career Builders

Recommended Posts

Why is Tour B X you're preferred choice...These are New and haven't been released yet to the Public for Public Opinion

Strictly from a looks perspective, I prefer the Tour B X. I loved the MB's and the Tour B X is a close relative to these. Also Endo forged.

"These are new and haven't been released"........Yes and No. They have not been officially released with this badging on them but they are no different other than a couple of tiny details from MP4's or 1000 other similar blades.

What Callaway did with this blade is what Scotty Cameron and every other putter manufacturer has done to the original PING putters. Same/similar design, different label, higher price.

Great Point Not much you can change with a Blade...

Looks like a take on the old MP 69's. Although the 69's are easy to hit, I don't like the ashtray effect on the muscle. Callaway seems to have fixed that, however, nothing beats a Mizuno. I have 64's in the bag for $$ matches and a set of 4's that I bring for intimidation. BTW, the only difference in the set is that the 4's are softer and the 64 3 iron is easier to hit by a touch. Have you noticed that everyone is trying to copy Mizuno?

Look...we can all sit here and argue about blades and make comments like all they are doing is what Scotty Cameron did to Ping...to an extent yes but What Scotty did was take a Chevy and turn it into a Ferrari. he experimented with metals, top line looks, the 009, 009m, he added a LOT more to the design than just "copy" it and stamp his name on it. Hell all Mizuno, Titleist, bridgestone, etc did was copy Hogan and Wilson...but I can ASSURE you that my Titleist 680's or even the 716mb's play a LOT easier and have more technology to them than the two set's of Hogan precision and personal irons I have. There has been a lot of technology thrown at blades over the last 30+ years with the evolution of trackman, high speed/low speed cameras so that they can see the interaction of the club with the ball or how it cuts thru the turf. The grinds in blades today are far superior to what they made in the 60's and 70's. Most of this can be attributed to the advancement in agronomy. Grass is much thicker and more lush on courses today then it was in the 60's when guys were hitting shots off of super tight lies. Trust me, I have a shafted up set of hogan personal irons and if I take them out and play (mind you I have a shallow swing) I will take beaver pelts that could cover a small child!!! With my 680's, 716's, MB1's I take a nice thing divot. I will also say that the grooves are far superior to what they played in previous years. You can't just say Oh it's just the same as every other blade out there. Callaway makes money off of every type of golfer and thanks to Phil Mickleson largely after he signed with them they have become a much more attractive company to EVERY type of player. 15 years ago callaway was more focused on the weekend golfer who generally bought Pings...Hell I remember getting my first great big bertha titanium driver. 8 deg of loft and an X shaft...that thing launched higher and spun more than hybrids I play now a days. That's because it was really 10deg and a stiff shaft because they weren't concerned about being attractive to the scratch golfer or professional golfer who wanted a blade or blade style club. Now Callaway is right up there with the best of them. Products evolve and grow. They obviously felt they needed to move in a different direction after the Apex MB being a dud. PGA tour players like muscle back irons as do a lot of traditionalist type players. Every ( or most of us) like to have brand loyalty and get attached to certain companies and fly their colors. This club ( in my estimation) wasn't built to try and sway all the blade players out there to leave their current kool aid of choice but to offer something to their players who are very brand loyal from looking elsewhere in this category OR it now helps them be in the discussion for players like a Rory who are known to love a MB type club. Seriously, who would have ever thought Rory (or hell maybe even a Tiger) might be draped in callaway colors?! You can't look at this in a linear fashion and say oh well nothing new...to the contrary...For brand loyalist types this is huge step in solidifying their base and their position in the discussion of "Players club" companies

The previous Apex MB was a dud? I think not.

Any update on a public release? I've reached out via twitter to some of the Callaway higher ups and they responded (miraculously) and said to give it a few months. Johnny Thompson said "Should be on the racks in a couple months....they are so pretty, I don't want to put any dirt on them!!!"

Man I really liked these in raw but now in chrome the hosel and neck looks so chunky. The long irons have this weird look to them. Like the blade was pulled away from the fat hosel. I can see these are really flat for Patrick but I don't think bending them toe up would help. I am not liking the looks of these at all. Blade itself is awesome, front and back, but that neck and hosel just scream out to me and need a diet. IMO

Of course.

- Something that continues to go long off the tee in the fairway
- Something that is a fairway finder when needed and long
- Something that high, consistent and helps with par 5’s
-  Something to help with long par3’s and short par 4’s

-  Something metal, lots of them and go the gaps I need
- Something metal, 2x of them and helps me 120y and in
- Putters - limited rotation because I cannot afford misses

Golf is what you make of it.  Play grateful and accepting. We are all lucky to have it.

Rather than expecting lets all try and appreciate instead.
Treat people the way you want to be treated
