New $500 Flightscope personal launch monitor (MERGED)

Recommended Posts

If the Skytraks were $1200-1400 I would of bought one already.

There are a lot of used Skytrak's out there

There's a reason.

What reason would this be? For the price, ST is outstanding.

I just bought a Mevo and plan to do a side by side vs SkyTrak in the near future if my home ST setup will work out with Mevo.

Not quite a video review, but here is the raw video from the mevo app saved to my iPhone's camera roll: http://bpxl.io/QGtSw/3bH4gq8R

Stats for the swing:

Ball Speed: 160

Smash: 1.44

Launch Angle: 12.3

Carry: 273

Spin: 2610

I was able to set up my tripod, hit record and let the Mevo and app do its thing. In the app, I was able to draw some lines to see if I'm on plane and keeping my spine angle. My coach was impressed and we're working on a few things we're seeing from the video.

I hope they are able to trim the video a little more in future releases. There's a lot of extra footage around the swing.

Why are you 20 handicap? You have a good enough swing and can carry a golf ball 270+ yards!

I'm tweaking the end video setting. I'm asking flightscope about starting the recording a bit earlier so I can get a proper swing plane line.

As far as my index, I haven't updated it on my profile. I'm an 8.

Any idea how much space the videos take up on your device, I have a feeling 50-75 shots at the range would eat up a lot of space if you videoed it all

They are HD high framerate videos, not sure how much space they take up. I went through and deleted the errant videos. They just won't show up in the app.

They are long videos. I may have a workflow that keeps the swings I want my coach to see and delete the rest when I review a range session/swing tweak review.

got mine this week and have been messing around w/ it when I've had a chance but its been a busy week at the course. I'm wondering if I am having some sort of an issue w/ the bluetooth on my phone as I get a ton of non-registered shots. Yesterday I hit driver only and I had 36 balls w/ stickers and it registered 18 of them and the rest were errors. Today i hit 9 irons and a few other irons and it was registering about 1 in 15. I'd read through this page prior to even going out yesterday to try it out. When I mention the phone part ( i have a galaxy note 5 thats about 18months old) i have similar issues w/ my blast golf sensor from time to time w/ it pairing and unpairing a lot. joined the facebook group so we'll see if i can get it figured out! Havn't tried it indoors yet or outdoors on a mat.

also, i think i have the original IPAD and I cant find the app do download to try it there instead of on the phone....might not be compatible being so old...i know blast golf didn't work on it either.

It seems like precise setup is paramount. You may want to focus on that and see if you can get things working better for you.

You comments sound like my call to Flightscope. When you search for the app on the ipad, change it to iPhone only on the drop down. Charge the Mevo again then set it up 5' behind the ball and report back. Mine seemed to work fine after that.

I just did my initial testing at the range. People weren't kidding about the distance and alignment. I missed more shots than I liked but I found it got better when I moved 1 ball in front of exactly what I I putted to the app. I used a 4 foot alignment rod to measure and moved the ball about 1 inch in front. It may be just my unit or a general sweet spot. But I would recommend using the alignment stick or tape measure then varying ball placement.

One KEY thing which I'm not sure anybody has mentioned. You have to select the club you are using! I left it on driver to start and hit PW. I was getting 2500 -3000 spin. I thought it was the range balls. Then I finally decided to select pw. My spin jumped to 8000. I selected different clubs and the spin changed. So I guess this is part of how they estimate spin without stickers. As nice as it felt to hit 145 yard PW it lost 10-15 yards once I selected the correct club haha. I'll upload an alignment video once I get home.

I didn't realize it would estimate spin..? Is there a "non sticker" mode or something? This has me sorta spooked.

There isn't a separate mode for stickers vs non stickers as far as I could tell. I'll play around with stickers vs non and use my skytrack to verify this weekend.

It has nothing to do with estimating spin. It has to do with where the unit is looking for the target(ball). All FS units have operated in this way. The units look for a projected launch angle and spin rate based on the club selected. Using the wrong setting will and probably is causing a lot of the "errors" and misreads people are getting.

This is how a lot of rumors are gonna get started...

Flightscope confirmed on the mevo user page if it doesn't get a good spin reading it calculates spin based on the club you use.. Ie..Estimating.

So will the others. Not sure if the "*" is also visible, but the estimation is nothing new. The estimation is not the primary reason though...

Great video and very nice swing. Thanks for posting this.

I have one question, I thought based on the online images that you would have the shot statistics overlaid on the video, however based on your video it does not look like this or do you set an option somewhere to split the data out?

The unit has a fixed radar beam. It will not "look" in any particular part of the beam for a target (ball). When a reflective item appears in the beam the unit will measure elevation (launch) angle using a monopulse method. Spin is measured by a radar seeing and counting fluctuations in the reflected signal strength. Higher end devices like trackman have refined enough receiver designs to measure these fluctuations without a reflective sticker. Mevo needs a little help, hence the stickers.

Without stickers, I'm guessing mevo will use the entered club to give it a ballpark spin number.

It overlays the stats in the app. That video was from my phones's camera roll so it is the raw video.

From what I have seen about the Mevo, it looks like it does measure launch angle. Can anyone comment on the accuracy of this feature? How does the launch angle compare to more expensive units?

Thanks

Yes it does measure launch angle.

The most influential factors in angular measurement accuracy for radars is beam width and range. The sharper the beams, the more accurate in angle measurement. And beam width is most influenced by antenna size; the bigger the antenna, the sharper the beam. Given the size of the MEVO, it will inevitably be less accurate than a trackman or a FS X series. But that doesn't mean it isn't good enough to measure within 0.1 of a degree using monopulse techniques, because it is measuring at close ranges (a few metres/yards).
