I'm not that familiar with golf rules since I only play casual beer rounds. I'm a little shocked that its only a 1 stroke penalty to take line of site relief like that. What are the limits to this rule? Does a rule official have to agree with you that it is unplayable or is it solely the players call? I can't remember how many times I've seen guys hacking it out of terrible knee high rough but if you trek far enough beck there must be a fairway or at least a patch of hardpan or something to hit off. It seems like this escape is way underutilized if all it costs is a stroke. Seems like a dumb rule that should cost you more strokes.

 

That being said, I don't blame Spieth at all for this tactic. Its not his job to make or enforce rules. His job is to win. There are multiple tourney officials all around whose job it is to enforce fair play. There is absolutely nothing to feel guilty about. There is no moral or ethical violation what so ever. I actually admire the guts to keep your cool in that situation and think your way out of a bind.

 

Player determines unplayable. It's an underutilized rule by hackers frankly. I say this as a high HC myself. I took one yesterday and it was huge. I got two clubs an dit took me out of knee high grass. You can even take an unplayable out of a bunker but you have to go back to the last shot.

Sure he should have taken his 3rd from there, but wtf took so long? Take the line, move back and drop. I said he should take the drop there as soon as he got to the ball. 25 minutes later he's hitting from that exact spot.

Jordan didn't break a rule. He just took a light year to apply the one he used.

Everybody acknowledged this was a second shot golf course before play ever started. Spieth led the field in GIR (aka 2nd shots) through 54 holes. Why are we so upset at him that he is leading?
