2018 Phoenix Course Conditions

Pinnacle will be closing for the summer to redo the greens, will reopen usual overseed schedule. Monument greens were redone last year.

Question. What tees do you guys play from at Southern Dunes? Played it a few times when I lived here before, but wondering what a 10 capper tees should play from. I am about 280 off the tee.

OCI, Gold would be a perfect starting place on your first round back there. playing the course myself on Tuesday. probably drop an update on course conditions on the thread here.

Talking Stick North (o'odaham) today.

Bunkers had good sand. Greens rolled true, not too fast. Greens were receptive, with ball marks having been made on most approach shots.

Fairways played firm, although lots of dead areas and dirt, especially in the landing areas.

Good breeze made the course play pretty long. I keep forgetting it is par 70, so even the 6500 yd tees has some long holes.

Lookout Mountain Sat 5/12. Had never played there before. Course is very firm and fast, greens are ok, just a little inconsistent as the bermuda comes in.

Are you playing or just practicing? I've been wanting to get out and play this course for a while now and see that golfnow has rates <$40 just about all times of the day. Might book a solo time for myself but always prefer to play with others.

Ah bummer - that's a great deal and I would have joined had I not since been invited to play elsewhere. Let us know how the course is and I might try to get out there later this week.

Coldwater yesterday on a "free twosome" coupon.

 

Tees - Chewed up

 

Fairways - thin and burned in most areas.

 

Rough - mainly dirt

 

Greens - smooth but drying out with lots of burned out areas.

 

Pace - 5 1/2 hrs for a 7:30 tee time.

 

Free was probably a tad high for the conditions. Sad. Used to be a pretty good track back in the day.

Verrado Founders this past weekend, it’s in great shape. They sent out an email, $49 golf, lunch and beer included. Think it’s good until the end of the month. The promotion may be on the website as well.

 

Only negative was that the pace was slow, a shotgun had teed off earlier in the morning, 5 hour round.

Played Trilogy at Power Ranch over the weekend. Dissapointing. 2 greens are getting major work, was told before teeing off in the clubhouse and by the starter, so was expected.

 

However, every single green was widely scattered with bare patches throughout, and were mostly rock hard. Not sure what happened there. Also bunkers were typical AZ rock hard pack.

 

Fairways and tee boxes were solid shape though.

 

I don't expect perfect this time of year, but do expect better for $40 in the afternoon.

Whirlwind - Devil's Claw today. 5 hour round, always slow out there. Decent shape. Greens are a bit slow but rolling pretty well. Worth the hot deal for $30 out there. Always going to be a place in my heart for this course after shooting my top 3 rounds ever today there.

Played back 9 at gcu yesterday. I thought it was in pretty good condition. Some greens were faster than others though.

and on a side note, I am gonna thread jack a moment, but it's informational.... all my fellow Valley residents/WRXers, you have gotta try and go (if you didn't this year, or never have) to the WLD when they come back into town next year. Ak-Chin did a fantastic job of hosting the event on the casino grounds. and seeing these guys live on the grid (and it was incredible to see the spots a Long Drive guy can hit it on a golf course like Southern Dunes) is fantastic show. Will Hogue beat Paul Howell in a great all Callaway final (wind was flat at dusk) blasting it 421 yds.

a sneak peak in their equipment build truck was a WRXers dream, but, the stuff they are all hitting is not for us mere mortals.

 

edit: and yes, that Callaway head says 5 degrees and with the tour issue only cog the setting can be/was set -2 open. the sound Glenn Wilson Jr. made all round with that driver today at the Dunes was unbelievable. :swoon:

I’m not, but it sounds fun. It’s a bit over an hour for me so not sure I’ll participate.

How are the bugs at Southern Dunes? Haven’t been there in awhile. Remember there being some at times. Going Sunday and was just curious. Thanks

There surprisingly weren't that many the last couple of times I played there. Forgot to bring bug spray and only got bit once. (I'm normally a magnet) Still recommend coming prepared though.
