Titleist Tour Soft

6 boxes on the shelf at my local store last week. Same 6 boxes there this afternoon. £30 a dozen for a 2 piece ball is not going to work in the UK.

 

That was my point previously. In the UK they cost more than a chrome soft and you can get the pro v for £2 a dozen more. The price point makes no sense to me in the UK.

I played in a tournament while on vacation in Florida. I won some Pro Shop money, and bought a dozen of these balls. The shop didn’t have them out yet, and the attendant didn’t know if he could sell them yet, and wasn’t even sure how much they were.

They had ProV’s on sale, and me and my buddy paid more for the Tour Soft than those.

I’m sure the guy in the shop had a good story for his boss the next day.

“These 2 guys came in and wanted to pay $47.50 for a dozen of those new Titleist balls when we have all those ProV’s on the counter for $30! Man are they stupid!”

The people buying a dozen Tour Soft from the pro shop before their rounf don't give a damn about how cheap a deal they could find on some non-Titleist ball. That is not what they are looking for.

I think the real thing is some people wouldn’t be caught dead playing something other than a Titleist. That and many pro shops only carry Titleist and Pinnacle so if you buy at the course you have little choice.

 

Those that are more cautious with their spend, can find a tour ball that suits them for under $40 and usually under $30 if you buy in bulk.

 

I have a large inventory of XV - CS and KSIGS. The CS I paid about $26 which is the most I paid for a ball in a long time, and those I paid more for because I dig the Truvis. ($32 on sale with 20% off when spending $100)

 

Yes there will always be the guys who only buy at pro shops. However I have said and will continue to say, the way people shop for everything is constantly changing , including golf balls and the amount of people paying $35 for a 2 pc ball is going o shrink after the initial interest wears off.

Someone posts their outrage over the fact that people actually pay Titleist's asking price for golf balls when there are cheaper, better, faster, cooler, newer, whatever alternatives out there.

 

Some of us post that Titleist ball pricing and popularity is simply what it's always been and that the majority of golf ball buyers are VERY different from GolfWRX enthusiasts.

 

Then there's the inevitable cries of yeah, but that's all changing. Any day now the whole world will start shopping at Costco, buying cheap Korean golf balls and saving billions and billions of dollar. Then Titleist is gonna be sorry they've ripped people off all these years.

They are still unquestionably #1 and they will continue to be for a long time. The point is the gap has shrunk and as time goes on I personally think it will. Competition is much different now. The way people shop is changing , even if only 20% of the people shop differently , that’s a pretty big shift and millions of golf balls are purchased differently than 10 years ago. NB you yourself said you shopping online is easy (from the Costco thread) and you would rather shop for household goods and have them delivered than go out and purchase in store.

 

Why would that way of thinking not cross over to a good percentage of golfers too ?

If you buy Titleist balls online, you generally pay just about the same price as buying them at a store or pro shop. Unless you go bargain trolling on eBay (which I do).

When you shop online you’re exposed to a much wider variety of brands to choose from. When you buy in the local pro shop typically you get Titleist and maybe one other brand.

 

Also the retail stores, typically you can use discounts and coupons on the competitive brands however with Titleist those discounts typically do not apply.

I don't think it's going to work here either, the Tour soft is currently priced 10 to 12 euros more than the Chrome Soft...that's crazy;

I don't think it's going to work here either, the Tour soft is currently priced 10 to 12 euros more than the Chrome Soft...that's crazy;

 

That's (probably) because your Chrome Soft is the current Chrome Soft and NOT the new one (about to be released).

 

They're discounting the current Chrome Soft here in the States too.

 

Once you see the newer CS I expect it'll be about 6 Euros more than the Tour Soft.

I have purchased NXT balls in the pro shop a few times when I realized I didnt put any balls in my bag. Why? Didnt want to pay Pro V1 prices and NXT were a price point down. I am not a scratch golfer so I didn't want to pay up for a premium ball. No other reason. No other thoughts going into it. This new ball will get plenty of buyers for the same reason. 90% of golfers don't know difference from one ball from another. Titleist gets premium placement in most pro shops and they provide multiple price points. Most golfers will purchase balls based on price at pro shop.

Anyway, in the next few days I will test all three balls (2018 Titleist Tour Soft, 2018 Taylormade Project A, and 2017 Srixon QStar Tour). Let's see how it goes. My gamer for the rest of the year will come from one of these three. The only other ball I'm interested in is the brand new Chrome Soft, which they also have now at Edwin Watts.

I remember a guy I played with some years ago telling me he used the NXT Tour because he wanted a high-performance ball but "wasn't good enough" for the ProV1. In his mind "Titleist" meant "high performance" so he just bought the second most expensive Titleist ball in the pro shop.

The couple times I've played an NXT I was shocked at the rock-like feel. They were the last Titleist balls I ever bought, I'm pretty sure, years ago.

Okay. This is going to be part one. Today I had a chance to go out to a golf course near me to chip and putt with all three balls (Titleist Tour Soft, 2018 Project (a) and the Srixon Q Star Tour). I chipped for about 45 minutes from variable distances - 3 feet off the green to 15 yards from the green. Then putted for about 15 minutes. So here are my UNSCIENTIFIC results.

 

Chipping - The Tour Soft is definitely softer than the other two. Second softest is the Project A. Least soft was the Q Star Tour. I expected that, and I confirmed it. All three had about the same spin. I had no machine to measure spin, but from my observation all three balls reacted very similarly. They all spin - even the two piece surlyn covered Tour Soft reacted the same as the other two balls from all distances. I could not see any difference. I will say that the Tour Soft comes up at a little bit of a higher angle than the other two.

 

Putting - hands down the Titleist Tour Soft feels the best. The Project A is slightly firmer. The Q Star Tour was noticeably clickier than the other two balls. All three putt nicely. But if I had to pick just based on putting, I'd pick the Titleist.

 

As of today, the Q Star Tour will not be my gamer. I'll keep the dozen just in case, but I will not make it my primary ball. It's going to be between the Taylormade and the Titleist. Now before everyone starts attacking me that the Q Star Tour is a 3 piece urethane ball with better value than the over priced Titleist ball, let me say this...I KNOW. Duh!!!!! I'm just talking about how for me, the feel isn't as good as the other two balls, yet they play the same around the green.

 

What will my next test be? I plan to play the project A and Tour Soft on the course so I can see distance and overall performance. As of today, I don't see any difference in performance between these two balls. The only difference is feel and a little higher trajectory for the Tour Soft.

 

I'll be honest. I was hoping that the project a would be a clear winner. After all how can a two piece surlyn ball compete with a three piece urethane ball right? Well, from my limited testing they play equal for me. I did play the Tour Soft on the course two weeks ago and I loved it. But I will make a final decision once I play both out on the course. For now...Good-bye Q Star Tour. I'm sure it's a great ball, but the other two feel better for me.

I would be interested in shots out of the rough, especially those around the green. I just can't ionomer balls to check out of those, they just come out hot all the time.
