Tiger Woods Driver Driver Shaft Change in Preparation for Augusta

Here is some insider news on Tiger Woods and his latest change to his driver in preparation for The Masters...

This week Tiger flew up to Augusta National to play 36 holes on Thursday and Friday. He put a new driver shaft in his M3, a Mitsubishi Tensei Pro Orange 70TX, the same shaft that Rory changed to when he won at Bay Hill last week. Tiger loves the shaft change and in the 36 holes he played at Augusta National the last few days he only missed one fairway.

Interesting. Being a primarily right to left course I wouldn't think he'd go to a more stout, super low spinning shaft unless he is aiming to simply hit the ball straighter and not worry about curving it 30 yards in either direction. I wonder what he'll do with the 3 wood?

Seems like there is a growing group of Tour players giving the Tensei Pro Orange a try. I know that doesn't translate to amateurs like us, but interesting none the less.

Ugh. Great. He’s changing shafts 11 days before the event and will have no competition swings under his belt with it.

Not ideal. I’m envisioning more army Golf in two weeks.

Well when it comes to that aspect of his game, what exactly does he have to lose? Its not a radically different shaft than what he is used to playing (White Profile) but the counter weighting might just be something that works better from a feel perspective. Either way I say go for it, if he drives it in the woods then at least it wasn't because he refused to try something different. :D

No big deal to me. His driving was better the last couple of weeks that it was in LA but it's not like he was hitting every fairway.

That said, I don't buy that he missed one fairway out of 28.

I agree, no chance of that. I bet he misses the first fairway at the Masters.

For those of us that don't know much about shaft tech, is this one heavier than what he had before? He drove it a lot straighter back in the day with the heavier steel shafts compared to any of the graphite stuff he has used lately.

Its the 70TX so slightly heavier than what he was playing but still only a little more than half what the steel shafts weighed back in the day. This is however probably the stiffest tip section shaft that he has gamed since playing steel though, so we'll see what happens.

Thanks. I tend to think he should just play a straight ball. Seems like half the time he sets up for a big fade, it turns out to be a double cross going way left. Bubba is the only guy who seems to be able to always get the big movement on his shots nowadays. The tech is designed to go straight. Nothing wrong with playing a straight ball.

I would tend to agree, yeah. I've been watching old Tiger stuff lately and he literally does try to hit that exact same low screaming cut shot that he did with the old 975D back in the day. That really feels like going out of your way to work against what modern tech has tried to accomplish, like attempting to do donuts in a 4WD car.

He ought to take that M2 with the Tensei white out of the closet and try it.

TM would no doubt be irritated that he wasnt playing their latest model but I think they’d get over it if it helped him.

I honestly wonder if he gives shorter a try. Back down to 43.5” like he played in the early days....maybe even 43”. Anything to hit the damn fairway.

So now Tiger, Rory and Adam are gaming the TS Orange, seems like the period when everybody started switching to the KK.

If Tiger has a solid driving week after Rory's win then everyone at MRC gets a nice quarterly bonus this year. :D

To the tune of Rolling Stones “Sister Morphine:”

“The scream from Arnie’s gallery is still sounding in my ear,

Oh Sister Tensei, will you go a round with me.

You know and I know if I go left at Augusta then I’m dead,

And you can sit around and watch all my numbers going far from red.

Sweet cousin Cameron lay your cool cool hands on the greens,

And with Sister Tensei turn my nightmares into dreams.”

My thoughts are that if he’s more comfortable with the Orange, and he thinks it may help eliminate “The Big Miss,” then let the good times roll.

I can guarantee that 27 fairways was fact, that info came from Rob McNamara who was keeping stats and playing alongside TW.

So he's potentially going to game a shaft from a manufacturer he doesn't even own?!?!?!

I disagree, I like his chances ;)

On the whole I still like his chances because everything else has been so good and he loves the course and knows it so well.

I just wish he was going to bag something that he’d already hit in tournament play. It’s so different than bashing it on the range or even in practice rounds.

Good to know he’s already there practicing though.

Out of interest, how can you guarantee that?

He has hit 51.61% of his fairways this year. He puts in a new shaft and he hits 96.42%. You can see why I am a little sceptical...
