No practice - Anyone else?

Recommended Posts

I have a driving range set up in my barn. I use it in the winter when boredom sets in. The problem for me is that there is no instruction available, so I'm just grooving whatever crappy moves I'm making. Our club has a range, you can hit all the balls you want, but they're yours and you have to pick them up, or donate them to the next person who bothers picking the range.

I consider myself very lucky to be a member of a club and we have the first tee off Saturday/Sunday (usually another game or two a week sometimes alone and hit multiple balls then). I seldom if ever practice. Five months off November-March and not going to a range. Every now and then a golf store and maybe a simulator to check out some new equipment.

So maybe I should hit a practice putt or two (and will if a new course), but I see no need to even hit some into the net prior to a round.

Our course has a great practice facility and have hit the range once during a demo day in 2.5 years.

Am I alone and stupid to be that way?

Is playing alone and hitting multiple balls not considered practice?

No that's playing a round of golf...... Really???

Practice is the driving range, practice area & putting green.......

Again missing the point and trying to be cute........

That absolutely is a practice round. Unless it's match play and you are putting on or near the green, which based on your OP you might want to do every now and again.

If you're going to complain about handicaps, whinge about the scores you shoot, and claim that you really really want to break 80 this year: then yes.

You really do miss the point of many of my posts. Complaining about other people's HC's (or whatever I do) has nothing to do with me practicing...... Wanting to break 80 is on my own terms and is not happening due to my lack of practice (more so to do with skill), but bad putting and loose shots/concentration. Today I played great, but putted terrible and 2-3 loose shots.

Concentration and good putting takes practice.

Skill also takes practice.

No practice? Ever watch Tiger hit about 100 putts with his right hand only...before or after he already putted 100 3 footers?

Nope never watched that. What channel is that on?

The 'no practice required" for weekend golfers channel.

I wasn’t being facetious. I’ve never seen that shown on any coverage. Did you watch him do this in person?

So you watch YouTube videos of Tiger hitting hundreds of 1 arm putts? Cool.

I play generally once a week at a 9 hole course that runs along Lake Michigan (out / back). Beautiful old course, great to walk but has no putting green or practice area. Also try to hit a nearby practice range once a week to work on short game and tempo. I enjoy both playing and practice but if have a choice - would rather play.

Just an older guy with 7 or 8 clubs and a MacKenzie Sunday Walker bag

I don't practice at all. Probably should, but it just seems like I never have time these days. I might roll a few practice putts on the putting green before a round to gauge green speed, but that's it.

I did have an optishot set up in my garage which I'd use just to keep swinging during the long off season up here in Canada (yeah, yeah, I know it's not super accurate, but just keeping my swing going over the 7 month off season helps)

Finally got to play my first (!) round of the year last night and shot 44-39, which as a 15 handicap I was stoked with, especially since I've barely touched the clubs since Sep last year. Only my second time ever breaking 40 on 9 holes, and to do it on the first round of the year surprised the hell outta me.

I planned on taking a few months off starting this past December and then my dad got sick and being newly married hit.

I have been to the range maybe 4 times all year, get to putt maybe once a week or every other week and played less than 10 rounds. We are all different. Some can maintain their abilities not practicing and some cannot. I'm in the cannot. I am at more peace day in and day out not beating myself up practicing, but playing I end up most of the time wondering why I even stepped out that day. On back to back 70's rounds at the moment. By not practicing I get to enjoy in the feeling of the good rounds more and be in, "I think I've turned the corner for the good and I deserve some new gear" mode for awhile longer so that is good lol.

In search of solid contact...

That is one of the more nonsensical evaluations to hit this board. Based on that I doubt anyone can show you the light so just keep believing its just your putting. If your listed handicap is correct then its far more than 2-3 loose shots unless you meant on every other hole.

Banging balls at the range is so different than actually playing a round of golf. Sure doesn't help me very much. If you're good you're good, and if you suck you suck.

You are speaking for yourself and lying to yourself all at once. That is most certainly not reality.

The contrarians are out in full force...opposite world logic. Pro's are playing and practicing every day...and if the pro's have to practice, what's that say about weekend golfers who believe otherwise?

Nicklaus's daily regimen....

Range...course...lunch....coach...course....range....putting green.
