MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

What part of the area? DC proper? Nothing in DC proper besides East Potomac and Langston. I like EPP for what it is, and if I still lived in the city that’d be my go to.

Blue Mash and Little Bennett have good grass options at normal prices. Olney Golf Park has the best targets in the area, but the grass range and practice areas are marked up significantly. I personally think Blue Mash is the best, but have spent a lot of time at Little Bennett because they did (maybe do?) offer a cheap $30/mo option for unlimited balls off grass.

Not as sure on VA side. I believe I’ve heard good things about 1757.

Terp, how heavy was that butt? Damn, that looks legit. The pork loin I smoked was @ 7 hours or so on a 5 pounder. Looks so freaking good though.

Just a bizarre day on the course. Woke up with a banged up back from powerwashing yesterday, could not hit balls, could not make a full swing. Brutal. Somehow just figured out a swing that could work. Shot 39 on the front with one birdie, 34 on the back with three birdies. Four birdies total for a 73. First time I've ever broken par on the back, was more than happy to have to buy the beers for the group after.

That was a 7.25 lb boneless Boston butt. I much prefer to cook 8 lb or so bone in. The bone seems to help cook the meat in the center a little better. Also, boneless doesn't maintain it's shape very well (I did sort of half a** tie it up) and the fat cap is a lot more uniform on the bone in. I will save the boneless for the crock pot. It was pretty good but I usually do much better.

Hive Tall Team Hype (As AltSean points out, there is no sound. Stupid copyright laws, its almost like they don't want them used for goofing off on the Internet. For full effect, please use the soundtrack from the original:
or simply play Quiet Riot's "Bang Your Head" on your sound system as loud as it will allow.)

I'm getting a kick out of these rounds since courses opened- there are holes where I feel like I'm in total control and 10 minutes later I don't know what a proper chip or pitch feels like, much less a full swing. Played 6-6-6 in the group, we had a 12-man skins game going, combined with me having to post a single round stroke play score for a club event.

Although I pumped two balls OB on the front nine, the shakiness wore off a bit and I managed to get a halfway decent back put together. Two birdies and one on the longest par 5 which ended up being a net eagle and worth almost the entire skins pot. Of course I finished the last three holes in +5 and bungled an OK round.

Nice round DC.

I only got out Saturday. I played last thursday and was horrible. 3 greens and 3 fairways.

Saturday morning, the range was open so I hit balls for about 45 minutes before my round. That was just what the doctor ordered. 7 greens on the front. 5 on the back. Only 1 birdie and no up and downs, but at least it felt like golf again. Course is PREEMO right now.

So our ringer sounds similar to how the solstice is, you put your base round down in round one and then in subsequent rounds you are just trying to improve on your first two. But at the same time we are also playing our weekend game so you cant just totally pack it in. Thing is, I dont really know how to play a real round and something like this at the same time. If I was playing a hole I had birdied, I almost didnt want to waste the swings with a bad back, so I had much less concentration in round 2 or 3. Managed to finish the ringer at gross 67, net 59 for the weekend and took 2nd net. Rookie move I only signed up for the 3 day and not the 2 day as well - would have won the 2 day gross and taken 2nd in the 2 day net. I never play in these though since we are usually out doing other stuff or traveling on long weekends.

Finished with 5 birdies on the card but had to leave two bogies on there. One was a bad bogey to leave on there but I figured it washes out the one lucky birdie that I made. Really pleased with how the game is looking overall and picked up a good amount of shop credit to use. Index dropped to a 6.5 but went back up to a 6.8 yesterday.

Friday night I picked up the Garmin S62 at Golf Galaxy too. My S6 still works great but I wanted something where the battery would consistently last 36 holes. Played two rounds yesterday, left it on overnight and its still at 62% battery.

Overall it was a great weekend, got four rounds in over 4 days. Taking today off and then 36 on Wednesday.

I know this is hyperbole, but I do not agree with that at all.

I think I've only played with you 3 or so times but you strike me as a very aware and thoughtful golfer when it comes to strategy and course management. Maybe you aren't including the Hive event rounds when making this statement.

@AltSean- tough with the play in brackets not decided, but if you want any action...

I gots:

$10 Hive MarshallMarshallMarshall over SeatWarmer Andy

$10 HighBoomingDraws over Rose

$10 CJBass over BandonDunes54

$10 Eagle1997 over DaveChen

Feel Free to take the other side of any of those. Venmo?

(Also feel like I took all Talls except the Marshall- SeatWarmer Match, which is probably Tall vs Tall. Solidarity.)

undecided as of yet. i'm angling for a neutral site, so not falls road or blue mash. maybe norbeck, if i can get us on. guessing dave would play the whites there, he'd be an 18. i'd go blues and be a 7. i really need to read up on the new rules, i don't think there are additional strokes given for playing a different tee anymore, but i know there used to be.

lil chen and reynolds are planning to play against each other in the same foursome if possible, so we'll knock out a couple matches from the MidMD division on the same day.

Round reports are full of selection bias, so I will give a bad one. Oh man, I was off the rails today. In pocket too much and the only pride is in duct taping the home stretch together to compete a little better.

more doubles than I could count, numerous 3 putts, and a short game that my 30 handicap dad would not be happy with. A lone birdie to show, and two other par 5s with birdie/eagle chances with only pars to show. Toppled drives, pulled wedges, flubbed chips. I filled the train wreck bingo card on the front nine alone.

We were stuck behind a group but slow play wasn’t at fault. I should have taken Advil and iced my knee but that was also a dumb mistake. The only physical complaint I’ll give myself is for not managing my hands, which got weirdly swollen up and made gripping hurt. I could have switched to a rain glove to solve that.

Waverly was in good shape, the Fabb/PQ/Coty trio played some really competitive golf and we had a decent set of matches going today.

TL;DR: you will sometimes completely suck and that’s okay in the long run.

i really need to read up on the new rules, i don't think there are additional strokes given for playing a different tee anymore, but i know there used to be.

The new system automatically adjusts for slope AND course rating no matter what set of tees you play.

In the old system if the white tees were rating 70, slope 120 and the blue tees were rating 72, slope 120 (this would be odd that the slope was the same but just go with it), your course handicap would be the same regardless of which tees you played. You would adjust handicaps accordingly if you were playing someone from a different set of tees.

In the new system, your course handicap will automatically adjust based on tees.

I'm having issues with the grint right now, but my MSGA app does this automatically. My CH from blues at my course is 7. My CH from the whites is 5.

As long as both players agree to it, you could play any set of tees and just give the appropriate amount of strokes. Shoot, you could play from the blues, let DaveChen play from the reds and get a stroke from him (in theory).

Waverly was solid yesterday except for being an absolute slog. The group in front of us seemed to have 4 guys who had no idea what they were doing out there. Marshall came out twice I think. But, like every other 1 trillion times in recorded history, this had no effect on pace of play. They took so long on the tee. We waited on our second shots on the par 5 11th. So, we all hit down to the green, hit approaches, start walking up to the green and they're all still on the tee. WHAT IS GOING ON WHEN THAT HAPPENS? I never know. It should not take that long to roll up onto the tee with an open fairway and hit 4 tee shots.

Fabb started right off with a birdie, Goosehook birdied 2 and Q and I were 2 down just like that. We did a 6-6-6 match. Changed partners every 6 holes. There were a lot of putts to swing holes and that's all you can ask for.

Fabb was 2-0-1. Goosehook and I were 1-1-1 and Q was 0-2-1. Fabb played best so that made sense. When his short game is good, it's game over because you know he's not missing a single full shot all day long. He had some crud from the sand, but also had a couple meaningful up and downs.

Not a ton of money shots. Fabb and Goosehook were both on 8 in 2. Fabb stuffed one on 1. Goose got there in 2 on 2. I bounced a pretty long sand shot off the stick on 14 and it sat a foot from the hole.

we had 4 pars on 7, which was playing 197 into a firm green, front pin. Tough shot.

Unfortunately @aiyyer is struggling with a midlife crisis and it has impacted our relationship. He says I cannot rock Linksoul gear yet he thinks he can pull off Sugar Skull headcovers and even trying to push their headcovers to the Hive via group text:
