Anyone not experience TM irons with face slots caving in??

As title suggests, I’m considering some new irons and after having read about TM irons with face slots caving in, I’m wondering whether these are isolated caes? Not sure if it’s swing apeed dependent? I swing my driver around 90, so definitely a slower swinger thus I’m looking at clubs with hotter ball speeds and the TM irons ticked aome of these boxes for me. Thanks in advance for your input!

Try any of the Callaway cupped face models. Hot faces without the problem you speak of.

There have been a HUGE number of posts on the TM face slots collapsing.

Personally speaking, every used set I’ve ever looked at in golf shops has at least a couple of heads where this has clearly happened.

It’s an interesting idea on paper, but a HIDEOUS design in practice.

I've played a set of RSi TPs for the last 2 seasons right until about 2 weeks ago when they were replaced by a set of P770s, and a set of RBladze Tours right before those. I swing driver between 105-108 last I checked, and none of mine are showing any issues of this. I play 60-75 rounds/season.

To Jag:

I would suggest that complaints on this site represent an extremely small sample size of all the sets sold, and as we all know, people rarely post about good "non-failures", but almost anyone who did have a failure will post to complain or ask for help with how to resolve.

I can't explain how for you "every used set I’ve ever looked at in golf shops has at least a couple of heads where this has clearly happened." Would seem that if it was this rampant, the shops taking these in on trade would be on the lookout for it and either 1. refuse to take them or 2. help the customer deal directly with TM?

Not doubting you or trying to start anything, but I can just as easily say "I've played 2 sets of TM face slot irons over the last 4-5 years and have personally never experienced this, and I have never seen a single used set for sale in shop that do either". I do think there were obviously some issues with face slots, but possibly bad batches out of certain foundries? Not sure how most of these would've ended up in used shops in COL?

I'm loving my P770s right now, but have to admit I actually miss the face slots a little - to me they helped frame the ball a little better and aid in alignment, plus helped some with forgiveness on shots slightly towards the heel or toe.

I'm gonna have to refute you halliedog. For me it was mainly an issue with the long irons. I had 5 different iron heads cave in on the 4, 5, and 6, irons. The turning point for me was I sent in a 5 iron to be replaced, and about 2 weeks later that face caved in. So, according to that logic is was not a bad batch but a design issue. My dad's buddy has a set of RSi1's and has had no problems so maybe I'm just a strong guy ;)

My miss is on the toe so not surprising that the toe side caved in, but not reassuring either. They did change the technology with the face slots and boy did I love the face slots for off centered hits.

You gotta try it for yourself to see how it fits your game, TM does have a good customer service department so if something does happen they will fix it.

I posted this in the club tech area but thought I might get more responses in this section of the forum...

I couldn't help you. I don't make enough clubhead speed to cave in an eggshell.

Seriously, I can't believe a major OEM like TM would have a prevelent defect like that without it being discussed a lot in a forum like this. I'd guess and hope these cases are isolated and hopefully only in players with very high speed.

At driver speeds under 100mph, there is essentially zero chance you'll cave in an iron head.

TM is also extremely good about replacing product that breaks in this manner.

Never had any issues with either the rsi 1's or 2's. Had each set for a couple season's. I had a few little chip's in the face slots but that's to be expected I guess. Didn't effect the feel or performance so no complaints here.

Not TM, but I had an issue with Adams XTD Forged heads caving. And it's not caving in the normal sense in that it's a clear mark or the face blows up, they just slowly became concave. In fact I'm sure I used them for quite a while without knowing. It wasn't until I was preparing to sell them that I noticed a few looked less than flat, and sure enough the credit card test proved it. My guess is many more out there have it than realize. I understand the appeal of face slots, sole slots, etc. but after this I'll only be buying solid heads in the future, especially for long term usage.
