Any of you guys using a TP Mills Putter?

Tp Mills Sycamore Halfback with GSS Insert

That’s cool! Your Sycamore and mine are the only ones I’ve ever seen with a GSS insert, and the inserts with the crosshairs out on the toe are identical.

I got this guy via the lefty swap shop awhile back. I absolutely love although I know nothing about it (style name, origin, even weight lol). If anyone has info I would love to hear it, although I mostly posted this to say that as a lefty who prefers flownecks, Mills is the only higher end putter I can find of this style, at least in stainless. To replicate this exact putter via Scotty or Betti would be nearly impossible (scotty), or cost $2k+ (betti) so I have to give Mills the utmost credit for satisfying my extreme pickiness!

TP Mills was affiliated with Spalding for a while before Spalding left the golf business.

I have one of those putters in my putter bag. It's a good club but I use face balanced putters now..

I now have two TP Mills putters and the one thing I’ve noticed about his putters is the “feel”. When you hit the sweet spot on a Mills, it’s so addicting and feels so pure. I scored a very reasonably-priced used pyramid-milled Burns from someone on eBay a while back when I was experimenting with lower-priced putters. The Burns felt really good compared to the other lower-priced putters I had tried and I wondered why the guy sold it so I messaged him and asked. He said he was rolling a TP Mills Soft Tail and it “felt oh so good when you hit the sweet spot”. At the time I wasn’t willing to spend the money to try one out, but now that I’ve started buying higher-priced putters, including TP Mills, I know what he means.

Awesome putter. How does that notch in the bottom affect the feel and sound of the putter? I’ve also seen this on some Giannini’s, but I’ve never tried a putter out that has that type of notch.

I just have a hard time understanding why off-the-rack Scotty's and the like are so popular when you can grab something like this. Unique, crazy cool to look at, and putts like a dream!

I spoke with David About the bullet sole a couple years back when having a custom Ming made. He said the bullet or notch cut out does several things. It allows for a thicker face resulting in more feel or feedback, lowers the center of gravity for amateurs like me who often come up early and hit on bottom of sweet spot. It also increases the MOI a little because you have taken weight out of the middle and have more on outsides.

While still being a demanding blade style putter it is easier to putt with than many others this style.

Hey guys! I just got back into golf about a year ago. I found a Spalding TPM I at a thrift store and did my best version of a restore. I love these putters and the Spalding line are a great way for me to get a mills. Recently I found a TPM IX, it looks like someone ground down the putter face, bakc, and drilled a hole through the center and filled it, along with two more in the flange. I'll include some before and after pics of it.

Any ideas on what has been done to it?

It's a ruff restore but I'm happy with my second go at it.

These originally came with a fake piece of wood on the backside of it. It may have looked good at the time, but the plastic piece has been taken off of yours. The piece was originally held on with a little bit of glue and three nails...one through each of the holes that you noted. I don't know that the face has been altered on yours, all of the ones I have seen look the same- no mill lines and the TPM IX stamping.

 

I have the heel-shafted version (an VIII) that I sanded down a piece of walnut and re-installed on the flange. It's one of my favorite putters!
