For me it's not about age. It's about the time when I started making "moving" noises when I was sitting still.

I'm 53 and feel like a senior - definitely look the part, might as well embrace the Grey

Edit : about all the medical issues that comes with aging......yup, got that covered as well

Since this thread isn't just talking clubs now, may I bring in a ball comment here?

I have been playing QStar Tour balls for maybe 4-5 years that are 72 compression.  I have some Srixon Soft Feel (60 compression) around from a recent failed experiment (though I did play them for a season or so years ago before the QST).

Gave a Soft Feel from my stash recently to a friend  and he keeps raving it has given him more distance. So I decided yesterday a warm day, to give the Soft Feel a go again since I seem to be coming up a few yards shorter this year on irons anyway (age 72, matching QST compression, lol). I really liked the SF. Good and straight tee distance for me and I think a bit more with the ground clubs.  Felt I was able to swing more smoothly, a challenge for me sometimes.

Was even getting some decent greenside spin, even a few drop and stops once I adjusted for the softer feel. These were the last season model. 72 compression on the QST vs 60 on the SF was noticeable, but not as much as the more muted sound. ( I might mention have tried the softer Callaway Supersoft a few times... marshmallows for me and I never knew f I hit the ball properly or not on full shots or chips.)  I was surprised how fast I adapted to putting with the SF today; it reminded me of the pure feel of PV1 putts when I used to play them, maybe half a dozen years ago. Or at least I think that's how PV's felt to me..(lol).

Bought a couple of dozen of the 2023 SF version today. Since I think greenside feel is crucial with a ball, and what to expect from it, I've generally just been a one type of ball in the bag guy. So I'm going with the SF for at least the next few rounds, and parking the 4 doz of the current QST Tour on hand. I also have a couple of doz new prior season QST and put those in my shag bag. I realize short practice with them won't mirror the SFT, but probably a lot better than using old scuffed balls of just any type or range balls.

Segue: My wife does not golf much, though is planning to play more. She likes yellow balls, and the yellow Soft Feel seems to be about the only good option now to find for her. Recently we played (her first round in 2023) and she pulled out a near new TP5 yellow ball hat someone must have found and given to her. I believe the ball is 87 compression. That ball with her modest speed should not have worked in theory. She was getting a solid "thwack" sound, hitting it maybe 20 yards further than usual off the tee, and often with a nice little baby draw. Similar confidence off the fairway. So much for ball-fitting science!!

The extra soft balls will fly farther off of irons. Usually higher with less spin.  I don't really find anything more off the driver.  I don't like them myself but if you want to buy some iron distance, it's there.

Maybe I just needed a switch up.  Agreed that the time or two I tried a SF again the.

last year  or two it seemed too soft and especially for the driver. I did switch back to a QST about half way yesterday and it didn’t feel as good.

Yesterday was probably a different feel mentally anyway and may the softer ball just helped as i  was tired…but pumped on meds. I was on day 4 of a day 5 short term Prednisone 50mg prescription  with poor sleep. My first and hopefully last prescription of that.  On Day5 it’s more intense - I think I can hear Timothy Leary (lol).

I played an exec course with my wife on the weekend. Had a chance without holding up anyone to hit both the QStar Tour and SoftFeel on some holes. I chipped in for bird on the first hole with the QST, that had me thinking. However...the SF does seem to go about a good 1/2 club longer with irons and certainly feels and goes better on mishits. And that was a warm day.

So, with some some hand arthritis and recovering shoulder pain I'm going with the Soft Feel as my new gamer. I'm a serial monogomist when it comes to golf balls, especially to feel consistent greenside.  I put my 5 dozen stash of QST on Craigslist to hopefully be gone and avoid vacillation.

I read a review  quite recently that the QST divide had less greeenside spin than the standard white urethane cover. Whether that is true or not, I did try a couple doz of the QST Divide (blue/yellow). They did feel softer to me than the standard white around the green and more muted. On course they also were hard to see, especially in the rough if the blue side was exposed. Plus the matte finish got dirty much quicker than white.  So I would not play a SF Divide.

My wife likes yellow balls, partly so she can tell hers easily, and since she is mostly playing Soft Feel yellow, guess I'll be sticking to the white!

Just coming off of a long odyssey trying to find an iron set, hybrids, and driver that work for me consistently on the course. Here goes:

Driver - Cobra LTDx LS works great after I found the proper shaft Fujikura F3; I like the movable weights near the driver face.

Hybrids - XXIO Eleven 3 & 5, fun to hit and long

Irons - 2021 Titleist T200 with Tensei Blue graphite shafts - wow, great feel and less offset is good

Wedges - Titleist they just work

Putter -  Odyssey Milled Collection 2 - flexible putter that works with different hand grips, stances, look at the ball or hole which inspires confidence.

Ball - been playing the Vice Pro Plus lately

ATTENTION:  Views expressed are my opinions based on my experiences playing golf.  I reserve the right to change my opinions - without notice.

I'd like to also stick up for Tour Edge here. I see a lot of Champions Tour Players, sport Tour Edge and I think it'll make a great case for a senior player. I'm 28 years old and I rock the Tour Edge line and it works for me as well! I feel like Tour Edge can go neck and neck with Callaway, Titleist, Taylormade, etc.

I went back to the Callaway Rogue ST Max OS irons and hitting them well. I guess I found the sweet spot, felt great. I went ahead and ordered the AW, GW, and SW, to fill out the set. I am using the Tensei 65 R shaft in them. I am trying out some older equipment that fell out of favor "horrible swing, nahh," how could that happen! So, Cally irons and Taylor woods and hybrids for now.

Bag is in overhaul mode

For the senior/low swing speed golfer the problem is achieving enough distance with a favorable trajectory to hit and hold greens with longer clubs (usually 5 iron and above).

The attached chart compares LPGA Trackman numbers to my launch monitor numbers.  For equivalent distances and ball speeds they are using about 2 clubs less. Those shorter clubs have more spin, higher trajectories, and steeper descent angles.   Their higher swing speed also allows them to hit longer clubs more effectively.

I have often heard seniors complain that all of their longer clubs go about the same distance.  I have noted that also because for me 3W and 5W are virtually the same club and both often go too low to hold greens.  I have also tried various hybrids to cover that distance range with about the same results, plus they are far too easy to hook.

I am interested in how other golfers deal with this situation.  In my case I use Launcher XL Halo clubs which are designed for high launch.  I also try to avoid playing too many longer holes where approach shots with 5I or over would be required.
