Ping putters - Sept 2019

Recommended Posts

OK...we heard back from PING.

They treat the PLDs like the Cameron shop, however, you have to make a request through an account to get on the list to go to Scottsdale for a custom fitting session, not just a tour. If you're approved, you will have access to virtually everything they do, but you better bring a platinum card because it's not cheap. They said a custom PLD is pretty expensive. The entire experience is expensive to be honest. But if you can swing it, they'll do virtually anything you want to it once you're fit at the headquarters. Just like Cameron, there are Tour only things, and they will probably only limited release things like the Bruzer if the outcry is loud and long. But overall, if you've got the cash and the time, they'd be happy to make you your patina Tyne with a long plumber's neck.

I love Ping but I'm far too lazy to go through all that crap for a putter.

Sorry, I'm not going to seek approval to buy a putter and then spend thousands just to get it. The PLD's are awesome but not THAT awesome.

Cameron's are basically the same way. You can't roll into Carlsbad and demand to be fit on the spot.

If I remember correctly, having a milled one-off made runs around $1500 +/-, depending on options.

Won eBay auction/arguably paid too much for it (though not much more than the above figure referenced that it would cost for just the putter if you go through the PING fitting process). I was bidding against what I presume to be some businesses and/or business owners, as one had around 20,000 feedback and the other over 36,000. Such ran up the price a bit.

Brand new right-handed PING Prime Tyne (black finish), 33.75” length, standard lie angle, swing weight unknown (will find out), loft unknown (will find out), face balanced, black double bend shaft, SuperStroke Mid Slim 2.0 grip.

Head is milled from a solid block of pure unobtainium.

It’s one-quarter to one-eighth of an inch shorter in length than I would normally prefer (though maybe I’ll like better), otherwise, exactly as I would want/need (though might swap out the grip to a Pingman PP58, which will also [favorably for me] nominally increase the swing weight).

Via about one minute of google-ing based upon the sender’s name, I was able to deduce the “provenance” of this putter. That said, such will stay with me.

Further, while PING said that they could theoretically work on it (e.g. re-shaft/re-grip; via the WRX Department) - notwithstanding if they would or if they would try to confiscate it (doubt they legally could do so), disclosing the serial number could cause some trouble for the seller (so I didn’t disclose it), and I will instead use it as-is.

So far, so good, but if it doesn’t work for me on-course (will find out tomorrow and in some future tests), I’ll sell it. Great putter - unfortunate not available to the masses.

Also especially gratifying after PING presumably intervened and halted my purchase of the last one of these on eBay (where the serial number was evident).

PING has a winner here - just ask C. Champ - and probably enjoys this “guerrilla marketing” and feedback, even if they’d never say so.

Hope these become more accessible one day.

I politely advised the seller that I cannot oblige.

Ping has perhaps figured out who sold it, so the damage is done in that respect (honestly though, it’s just a putter).

Further, Ping messed up a bunch of my custom orders for which I paid full retail, accidentally deleted nearly all of my registered golf clubs from their registry, broke some of my irons that I sent in for work that I paid for, halted my last attempt at purchasing a PLD, and now wants this PLD putter back?

Good luck.

You just started a manhunt for some poor sap that set up the sale of the putter. Ping has sent out their henchmen with black bags..

Funny thing is, if the PING Sigma G/Sigma 2 Tynes didn’t have the too-soft inserts and were just metal faced, outside of cosmetics, there’d hardly be many differences. Really reminds me of CT vs. OTR Camerons. I didn’t use the Prime Tyne yesterday and kept the PLD3 in the bag, which may have been a mistake, as the greens were quite slow given course conditions.

Slightly less it feels like.

Perhaps I will knock .25” off the G Tyne length, get the same grips/tape wraps installed on both (same shaft between them minus the coating), and then weigh them both to determine the head weight difference. No desire to pull the shaft.

Cut the Sigma G Tyne down .25” to the exact same length as the PLD Prime Tyne and re-gripped with the exact same SuperStroke Mid Slim 2.0 grip with one wrap of tape. 10g difference across multiple measurements. Safe to say that the PLD Prime Tyne has a 360g head weight, assuming that the Sigma G Tyne is indeed at 370g.

While the PLD Prime Tyne aesthetically appears more than 10g diminutive, I believe that the PLD Prime Tyne all steel construction accounts for this in comparison to the insert/plastic components found within the Sigma G Tyne.

I will soon compare it to the Sigma 2 Tyne as well.
