Callaway Jaws MD5 - who has one?

DMartini

Recommended Posts

who has thrown one (maybe more) in the bag recently?

looking to get a c grind 58* to replace a 1.0 PM grind 58* that i just struggle to use consistently around the greens.

what shafts have most of you guys gone with in the Jaws? the stocker S200 TI or ditched that and changed it out for something else?

52s and 58x... coming from the md4s. Much softer.. dent and scratch way easier. Tour grey way less durable. They do look fantastic and feel great. They do definetly launch lower. They say one degree... feels like 5. Im sure its just 1 degree though. I had 52s and 56w md4s... the launch and trajectory is so different i switched to a 58 because 56 was just too low it seemed.. this is all from just hitting about 20yrd pitches in my back yard because the weathers bad now in the NE. Im ok with the 52s its my go to prettt much all around the green and coming into the green from 80yrds. Very versatile degree for me.

The 58x im tossed up on the grind and degree maybe mostly grind. I have to say the x does seem very versatile. I wont know until i just play next spring. Hopefully works great in the sand and other situations i need it in. Want to use it from 40 yrds coming in. Getting over or out of bunkers. Flops. Short sided shots etc. May just go with 58s if it dont work out... worse case back to 56s? Gonna be a long winter.

Same here with S400 8-iron shafts.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

> @st_pedro - how do you find the wedges performance? - especially the one with the DG shaft as thats the shaft im going for only not S400 but S300 120.

As any fresh new grooves, it bites and spins tremendously well. Just need to see after a few months of aggressive usage. Apart from the new shape and “jaws” grooves, what I appreciate most is the grind set up. Much better in comparison to some of the previous offerings.

The S400 is very precise, I did try the AMT white and launches slightly higher. The modus3 125X is very smooth but need to load properly for low trajectory shots. Just got the cTaper 120S+ wedge shaft, gotta try it out. It’s gonna be different since cTaper is counterbalanced shafts, might need to recalibrate the swing weight

I went to the store to possibly replace my 54 PM Grind 19 with the MD5. It was a very solid feeling wedge, but for me it just did not make the cut. The Ping Glide3.0 and Mizuno T20 were the top 2 performers.

But comparing it to my PM 19 the Jaws MD5 was spinning about 200 more rpm on my 60 yard shots and close to 500 more on full shots. And it definitely seemed more consistent on short chips, which was my main issue with the PM 19 and the reason I wanted to change.

I just got mine - 50S - 54W>(55)- 60X with CTaper130x but I am not hitting them until next season. I’m going to do all my range work this winter with my old Vokeys and then transition into the MD5 so I can save the grooves as long as possible

this is making for some great reading fellas, general consensus is positive which i'm liking the sound of.

@st_pedro - that is good news about the DG as what you described is also what im looking for in the Jaws (fingers crossed i can achieve this with a 120 S300!)

@Mordrid - you are not feeling the new PM grind? i have the 1.0 in 56* & 58*, the Jaws will replace the 58* but my sand iron is the PM in 56* also thinking about looking into the 2.0 for an upgrade for that as well soon.

I have seen pictures of the X-grind wedge heads and soles. Sole reminds me of the Calla XForged 56°/15 with C-grind, which had more heel and toe relief than current C-grind. XForged came out circa 2008 right before the groove rule change.

Someone who had tried the MD4 X-grind warned it was too severe a grind. But, it looks to me look the X-grind is the old C-grind. How did you find it? I got good strikes from the XForged (I quit using it because it didn't mix well yardagewise with other wedges I got).

Early experience is easy to hit off tight lies and from the fairway. Still getting used to in bunkers.

I have 58 x grind. I will be returning it for a 58 s. The leading edge doesnt seem to sit low enough for tight lies. I understand its 12 bounce(actualy quiet more then 12 i heard roger cleveland say in a video because of its unique shape) i just think its a tricky grind and possibly unnecessary. I can open a s grind just fine and make flops if not better. I think i will be ok with a s grind out the bunker which is my only concern. Half swings and fuller swings seem to be bladed every other shot attempt for me with it and i cant havr that. Pushing the handle a little forward then causes getting a little stuck sometimes or another kind of blade. I just think the s grind is right for me. These things do spin like crazy though. If you hit it right stops quickly.

After a quick courtship with the x grind, I am doing the same. Moving to 54 and 58 with a grind. Got a more true fitting today and his feedback was that x grind has a lot of bounce but further back on sole. Add in my poor chipping technique and it wasn’t a good fit for me

The senior pro at our club has test-hit the Jaws, but we don't have any demos as yet.
He says the bite/backspin is excellent, especially on partial shots.@J LO
You said above that you were moving away from the X-grind: "Got a more true fitting today and his feedback was that x grind has a lot of bounce but further back on sole."
What effect does the trailing bounce have on turf impact? I never have understood what trailing bounce does.

haha i'm sure they do and i'm hearing the new Sm8 is $200 a pop? No thanks. MD5's IMO have the best shape out of anything on the market. Straighter lines and tons of grind and bounce options. Spin wise I doubt theres any discernible difference between any of the top wedges on the market.

I just got out and played my Jaws5 56S today. I have the DG200 shaft in it. Initial impressions are very positive. Nice turf interaction, good spin, and good control. It also has a really nice soft but solid thud at impact, which I like. It was as good or better than I was hoping it would be. I am headed to Florida around Christmas, so I will play 2 rounds with it while down there.
