It was a major because it was the championship tournament of the organization of the best players in the country. It hasn’t been that since 1968. The Players Championship is now that tournament.

no it really isnt. Ask any player which one they want on their mantle. Ricky fowler or matt kuchar wouldnt be talking about breaking through if the players considered it a major. Henrik stenson literally said hed trade it for a major in the 2009 off season but luckily won one 4- years later. The wanamaker trophy has tremendous history and you denigrate it by dismissing it. it literally formed the pga of america. you may wish it not to be a major but its going nowhere. The players will continue to be a marquis event like others on tour. nothing more nothing less.

The players prefer it because it is a major. If it wasn’t deemed a major by the media and the Players was, they would prefer to win the Players. Othet tournaments had major-like status and history that no longer do. The Western Open for example. The US and British Amateurs. Once the PGA Tour broke off from the PGA in 1968, the only thing keeping the PGA Championship a major is its legacy.

the western open is the greatest example of what youre stating. it was like the players considered by many an "alternate" major and very important tournament but was never a major. you cant rewrite history to suit your preferences. it is what it is. The Masters isn’t a major just because of history. It is a major because it is by a large margin the most watched and most popular golf event in the world.

Note that you have no good explanation why the PGA Championship is still a major while the Players is not.

I don't understand how Reed can't be one of the favorites at the Open? He loves chaos, the fans will be riding him, he clearly feeds off of this. The course is 7200 max, Reed isn't all that long. I think he has a great chance of winning the British Open. His short game and putting is pretty ridiculous. Can make a lot of the shots required to win.

Am I missing something that makes this pick terrible?

Hawkeye irons are the epitome of SGI irons. Massive offset, huge shovel design, super wide sole, etc. Just because you do not have the talent to pull off a 4.9 index using similar equipment does not give you reason to berate his abilities. Take some lessons dude.

I'm not making any predictions, but to me, the five majors are the R&A Amateur, the R&A Open, the USGA Amateur, the USGA Open, and the PGA.

These are the events that Bobby Jones and Walther Hagen won.

The Masters is a pretentious invitational that's the championship of nothing but itself.

The Players is on a Pete Dye course that lacks only windmills to putt through.

I don't expect lots of agreement, but that's my opinion.

I'm not in any way suggesting retroactively changing major status. I'm questioning why currently the PGA Championship is a major while the Players is not.
