If the PGA Tour for some reason went to war with the PGA and really wanted to torpedo the PGA Championship and replace it as a major with the Players, it could engineer that fairly easily.

Do you know how stale that would get? Augusta National is (about) the only course that is/should be a constant venue for the majors because it's about the only time most folks will be able to see the property. You're telling me that a public resort course is going to be able to sustain a decade or longer of excitement/keep ticket sales up/viewership constant by having Sawgrass become a permanent venue for the PGA Championship? Who said the Tour would have to play it at Sawgrass every year? If the PGA Tour really wanted to, it could make moves that would replace the PGA Championship as a major with the Players Championship. It doesn't make sense to do that now, but they could. I'm still not seeing a good reason why the PGA Championship is still a major other than historical legacy.

Why is The Masters still a Major? It has the weakest field of the 4, it has been going on for the least amount of time, it's played on the same course every year with no rough at that. Maybe replace it with TPC. It has a stronger field, can still be played on the same course, and the winner gets more money.

The Masters is just a whack invitational. Well, I mean except for the historical legacy and all.

I'm not going off of importance but i can certainly give you courses that i would much rather watch than TPC Sawgrass.... Plantation Course (Sentry), Waialae CC (Sony), Torrey (Farmers), Pebble Beach (AT&T), Riviera (Genesis), Trinity Forest (AT&T). Take away the extra $$$ that's inflating this event and you really don't have anything other another tour stop

I wanted to include the venue's for the BMW Championship but they move it around so i wont count it. but they too have better courses than TPC Sawgrass

Sawgrass is incomparably a better course than Torrey Pines. And just going by watching the players play the course on TV, it's as good or better than any that you named except Pebble.

The Players is the PGA Tour Championship. Take away the money and just that it is called a "major" and the PGA Championship isn't anything more than a glorified tour stop.

I couldn't disagree more. Between being bombarded with ads every 10 minutes making claims The Players is the 5th major the course really doesn't view well from TV. Did you watch any of the Sentry this past week? That's not better to view on TV than Sawgrass?

We're at a impasse, I think TPC is snooze and what they're shoving down everyone's throat presenting it as a 5th major is a huge turn off

If the most important thing to you is seeing a cliffside ocean view, than Kapalua is better than Augusta, Winged Foot, Shinnecock, etc. But to see a course that requires shotmaking and strategic decisions, Sawgrass is great.

the tournament has also been hosted at Aronimink, Olympia and Cherry Hills. All 3 of those are better sites than Sawgrass

I'm sorry i guess watching these guys having to flight their ball down isn't shotmaking? Using contours and slope to to have the best angles in for approach shots probably doesn't make for much "strategy" either.

well that settles it then. Because the publications have it that way. Do you even know how Golf Digest ranks courses? They have a category or did that was "resistance to scoring" otherwise known as difficulty. Is Sawgrass tough? Sure. That doesn't make it a great course. Do you take those lists seriously? You can't find one fault in the lists? Totally fine with every course ranking 1-100 no changes needed in your eyes?

Even though it doesn't jump out at me personally, IMO a couple of things that Sawgrass has going for it: It's built literally for theatre. Many of the pros don't like it, that tells me it challenges them, And you don't have to be a specific type of players to win there. You just need to plan and manage your game.

Golfweek also gives Sawgrass a higher rating than those courses you mentioned. And Tom Doak gave it an 8 on his Doak scale, which is a very high rating.
