i'm probably more likely to be "that guy" myself. My course is a 9 hole course and the 9th hole is 240 yds, if there is another group on the green I will wait for them to clear. I have reached the green only 3 times in my life and i'm reasonably certain never in the air, so not much of a player safety issue. I just try and think how I would feel if I'm putting on that green and somebody's ball comes rolling on, like you couldn't wait a few more minutes?

Bill has a 100mph clubhead speed with driver, it could have been a 20mph tailwind and he has no chance of getting there but that’s just Bill. Good guy, we all have our quirks about us.

I love building these types of players up. Then we put a wager on the back nine and your lunch is paid for. Really easy to spot a player like this. It’s usually the loud one who swings for the fences and can’t figure out why his ball just won’t touch the shorter grass.

That is an issue though, when you “could” get there. It’s not likely but possible. Do you wait or just go ahead and hit. Especially when you’re with strangers. Wait for the green to clear and then chunk it, man do you feel like an idiot.

Well, I really liked your story . . . and it made me think of a related non-golf incident that I now can't get out of my head, and which by writing this I now attempt to rid myself:

I'm the same way. I'm in my late 40's but still carry the driver 250 on average and 265-270 if I hit it perfect. If the course is packed I'll lay up with an iron just to keep things moving. But if no one is pushing us, I'll wait if there is a chance I can drive the green. On regular holes I'll wait until they are moving toward the green and definitely out of range. If a ball rolls up on me in the fairway (or on the green for that matter) it always ticks me off a little.
