Removing Multicompound grips, worth trying?

I bought a set of irons that I need to cut down. They came with Midsize Golf Pride MCC grips in great shape. Are these grips harder to remove than non-cord grips? Just wondering if I should invest in a tool or just cut them off. I don't need the grips for myself as I prefer Tour Velvet and standard size. But, thinking I could recoup some of the $ spent on a tool, and then have a tool on hand for future use as well.

They are pretty easy to remove. I use a grip removal tool and some solvent. You insert the tool into the grip collar, drip some solvent in, and start working the tool further down. The grip slides off. Thing is, I don't know who would buy used grips. I wouldn't.

I haven't found them any different to remove than other rubber grips. The tool helps.

They feel like new, was thinking someone might pay $30 or so, no? New set would be over $80.

I find that they can be easily removed but the cord will break slightly and make the grip feel rough for lack of a better description.

I have had a grip-shooter tool for years that has paid off many times over. It has a hypodermic style needle that you stick in the grip at the butt end and squeeze several times injecting solvent in the grip. Twist the grip a couple times and it comes right off. I use it when I'm re-shafting and the grips are almost new and don't want to toss them. As others have said I don't think there is a market for used grips but if you're a tinkerer the tool could be useful.

This tool is the ticket. I've been using one for over 10 years and it works like a charm. Well worth the investment, especially if you like to tinker with different shafts.

Get the tool. I've used both kinds but trust me, the syringe is dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.... even if you DO know what you are doing. But you'll be glad if you get the other tool. It pays for itself real quick. And why wouldn't someone buy the grips? I see people buying and selling shaft pulls every day. I also like a midsize grip and would be building them up and stretching them anyway...so who cares if they are stretched a little already? But if you use the syringe, you are poking a hole in them which would be worse in my opinion.

I have both the syringe and the T-handle tool that you slide up under the grip. There is no comparison is the ease of use and the results. The syringe is hands down a better tool. The t-handle grip remover will more often than not leave pieces of tape inside the grip, which you can definitely feel if you reuse the grips. This is in my experience, anyway. That is the entire reason I bought the syringe tool. It has paid for itself many times over. It can be messy, but if you are careful it's definitely not dangerous. And the hole in the grip is a non-issue. The hole is tiny and doesn't hurt a thing.

I'm an old school guy and felt the same way that you do. Until I saw a friend of mine who had been using the needle for 20+ years with no problem, accidentally poke himself in the hand. Not a pretty sight. Spent over a week in the hospital with infection and has a nice scar on the back of his hand for the rest of his life. I bought the other tool immediately along with a grip brush to clean them out and have never looked back. Be careful and stay safe my friend.

I hear ya. A pair of leather gloves is never a bad idea when doing most tasks in the club shop. Heck, I was cutting off a grip the other day and went to pick up my hook-bladed utility knife. I started to drop it and instinctively tried to catch it, cutting my fingertip in the process. It wasn't a bad cut at all, but I work in a hospital and any little open wound could be a source of MRSA infection, or something even worse. I do believe I'll be wearing my gloves a little more often in the future.

T-Handle v-groove tool is $20, spray bottle with needle is $75.

 

I’ve used the T handle tool for years. It takes a few repetitions to figure out how to be efficient with it, but once you get the hang of it, it’s super easy. (Except Superstroke putter grips.) Also, every needle/spray bottle I’ve seen has ultimately broken - won’t keep pressure, line breaks, hole develops, etc. T handle still going strong.

I second the comment about the tape leftovers inside the grip, it is annoying. @Bigarch while I can see why you advise against the syringe, that’s like saying a knife is dangerous. Yes, it is. But a lot of tools are.

The syringe is pretty safe if used with a little common sense. I always have my clubs in a vise and the base of my vise can be adjusted. I setup to have my shaft parallel to my work bench. With the bottle sitting on the bench I simply jab the grip and give a few squirts. I understand lack of caution can create an accident. I always laugh at the videos posted on Youtube of how to change grips and often you will see the "instructor" doing the entire procedure hand-held. Not to say you can't but you lose some precision and increase the chance of accident. Using a hook knife can be nasty too if not careful.

In my experience those multicompound grips are more difficult to salvage than the typical grip. I'm not sure if it's the cord or what have you but the tape tends to stick inside.

Not necessarily. Sure for the people who hang out in this forum, who are measuring out swingweight to the gram with $50 iron shafts, that kind of person is going to order their grips from wherever new and that'll be the end of it.

But to the guy bagging Callaway big bertha oversized with the hardened plastic remnants of a grip on them, whose buddy pulled him aside after his last round and said "you need new grips" that guy may just turn to Craigslist!

(I'm not promising anything, but there are guys out there, myself included, who would buy that kind of thing, because cheapness)

I have wasted too much time trying to salvage grips with injecting solvent, or running a tool up them, and trying to work them free . And even if that works, and there are too many F'ugly tape left-overs for my liking, I toss them anyway.

I use a compressor and I have piece of plumbing pipe I slip over the grip to prevent grips from exploding. If they don't come off that easily with a compressor, then out comes the knife. I buy my grips only when on-sale, so no point investing too much time into saving them.

The T handle will work. It is kind of a pain, and can leave tape leftovers inside the grip, but it works.

So I have a question.....I messed up with an order I placed for clubs. Irons came in with MMC +4 logo down and wedges logo up. I like logo up so would it be easy enough to pull the grips and re-grip or should I buy 7 new grips for the irons.

You may be OCD about your clubs, but that sounds like too much hassle and expense to mess with. I mean, to replace them it's like $10 a grip, and to remove and reinstall is going to be somewhat of a PITA. I would just play them and not worry about it. I can see where you're coming from since I like my grips logo up as well, but the logo orientation isn't going to change the feel or performance of the grips, so just go with it until you wear them out and it's time for something new. My $.02.

If you use a heat gun and warm the grips prior to taking off them off, the tape tends to come out a little easier.

 

Ive also had good luck selling lightly used grips.
