Callaway Epic Forged irons discontinued?

Recommended Posts

Not surprising. Over priced, niche market for those.

I picked up a 34* "6" iron to play a alternative to my 5 hybrid on some courses. On sale at CPO.

Callaway always has a "Hey, look at me, I'm rich!" line of irons that retails for over $2K and is out of the line-up in a year.

Callaway instagram shows something coming tomorrow...

All signs point to new Big Berthas which are at the very opposite end of the price spectrum from the Epic Forged irons. Would be weird to pitch their cheapest set of irons as a replacement to their most expensive.

I agree.  Maybe Cally is going to abandon the Ultra high price iron line moving forward?

I don't know, Mickelson put both the last two generations in his bag. Have to imagine if he's a fan they'll keep making it.

I've defended Cally to the moon and back and am a customer but they've got to start making since with their releases...  I'm a customer and I can't even keep up with it.

Iron Lineups last 24 months:

Rogue, Rogue Pro and Rogue X (regular GI and mass appeal sets)

Big Bertha (premium GI),

Apex & Apex Pro (premium players)

Apex MB (premium tour)

X Forged (premium tour)

Epic Forged (super premium GI)

Mavrik, Mavrik Pro, Mavrik Max (regular GI to mass appeal re-worked configured Rogue)

Big Bertha B21 (cheap/regular GI)

*So if Big Bertha B21 irons replaces Mavrik/Max then essentially the Mavrik line lasted  less than 7 months (yes I know they come out in the fall) but I'd say more people buy clubs in the spring.

*If Big Bertha B21 replaces the Big Bertha irons then they just decided they're no longer a premium priced product?

*If Big Bertha B21 replaces nothing and is yet another completely new line then??

To me it looks like a Dicks Sporting Goods product that is a combination factors.

I’d be interested to know release timing on the Apex, as well. I currently have the pros from 2016 and am demoing the 770s on Friday, but I’d give the 21 pros a chance if I don’t have to wait forever.

Same here.  I'm looking to replace my 5, 6 and 7i from wear and the fact I'm just not in love with the '16 Apex Pros in the longer irons.  To me they're as if not more demanding than the '18 MB.  I'm very happy with the MBs in the lower end but need some new longer irons.

I may have to just buy the '19 Apex Pro individually off CPO and reshaft them if I go that route but I'd like to see what the new stuff looks like.   Or bite the bullet and end up in a Taylor Made PSeries combo set.  Or T100/200

B21 isn't replacing Mavrik or Max. Mavrik is their GI iron, Mavrik MAX is their SGI iron, but leans more towards regular GI and B21 is all out SGI. Bigger in every dimension and even more forgiving.

Yes, they've decided that the BB line is no longer going to be an ultra premium line, but it also isn't cheap. B21 costs more than Mavrik. The idea of ultra premium GI irons kind of flopped, if you need that much help from your irons then you're probably better off with lessons than spending an extra $500 on irons.  No matter how much tech they put in the irons, they can't swing the club for you. I bet the $900 price point is going to work out well for them.

It also isn't a completely new line, it is replacing the current BB irons in the line-up.

@cmatthews77 if you are wanting to upgrade your '16 Pro long irons, id def look at the '19 Pro, i have a set of 16s in my backup bag & while i absolutely love them and they are going nowhere ever i certainly know what you mean about them being a demanding club to use especially the 4,5 & 6 irons, the 19 Pro long irons are easier to use that is for sure.

so you should at least have a look at the 19 Pro as it is a great iron, and the long irons are great to hit.

to the topic of the Epic series, maybe it has run its course, the Epic was the iron in which Cally could throw all its tech & know how at and make a no holds barred (no cost also) iron line.

now with the Rogue line, Mav line and the new BB21 line maybe the idea for the Epic series has run its course?

dont know for sure just spitballin'.

did get to hit the Epic Pro 7 iron with PX LZ 6.0 at the range one day when they were first released, was a great club, felt nice, sounded good, great distance, but good gosh what a price tag lol.
