-100 to start a PGA tour event for an amateur, could they win

This thread suffers from the same thing the TV announcers do when discussing playing certain shots, which is improper "labeling."  They always say "a lot of amateurs don't give enough..." when discussing a shot, but a lot of amateurs actually do.  What they should be saying is high handicappers, not amateurs.  But the pro/amateur thing has been so ingrained it's a hard habit to break.

It really depends on how bad the Am craps his pants.  If he plays to his handicap maybe, but I say they wouldn’t shoot close to their handicap.

the pressure

the course, back tees, fast greens, tall rough

TV cameras, good luck

galleries, choke city.

I’d say the average 18 would shoot closer to 36 over per round. That’s 144 over par assuming they’d make the cut.

now if it’s a pro Am format, front tees, course set up for resort play, you might get a few guy ps close to their handicap.  Keep in mind most people only shoot their Handicap about 20% of the time anyway

Why is an amateur an 18 handicap? A lot, I mean A LOT of ams are terrific players. Every player in the US Am, Mid am and Senior Am would win. Just about every college golfer and a lot of high school players. The top 50 from every state am in the country. 80% of the AJGA tour.  Just a number out of my @$$ here, but I would guess there are 10,000 ams that could convert on the -100 start at all but a few events on tour. There are at least 200 guys in every state that could get around most pga tour stops in 89 or better, and we haven’t even left the US yet.......

Oh h*ll yea!!!

I agree ? with ya on this‼️‼️

I was speaking above to the mid/high caps that have absolutely ZERO clue as to one, just how difficult a Tour track in Tour condition is, secondly, just how thin that air is during a tournament with thousands of fans lining the fairways(pre-covid, lol), and finally, just how good the guys that Play those Tour tracks on a weekly basis are,

I'm also speakin about the Ams that believe that everyone hits the ball ONLY 250yds??

I can walk into our Men's Card Room on Saturday or Sunday morning and find 12 guys that could, with me bein #13 before I had my stroke and got sick, and 4 of em are former Tour Boys who got their status back. Oakmont probably had 16-20, with 7 bein former Tour Boys. Granted, we're the top-2 Players' Clubs in town, however as you said, there are AT LEAST 200 guys in the state, and I'd bet more if I had to lay money.

I hope all's well Brotha  and that you're having a nice season?

Cheers?

did you read the original post?  It’s not about high level college Am’s etc.

sure, if you are a plus capper it’s a different conversation, especially if you have played in high level competition

I did read the original post, it asks if a bogey golfer or scratch could get it done. The discussion continued further and the post I responded to lumped all amateurs into the 18 handicap category. You don’t need to be a plus to get this done. A 5 could do it. There are tens of thousands of golfers in the US capable of what the original post asked. The OP didn’t exclude anyone except professionals. A plus is still an amateur.
