Helping partners look for ball

Recommended Posts

Amazing how poor bias driven "reading comprehension" is by some people.

Let me repeat for those that funked out or skipped HS the days reading comprehension was taught.  I said: No, they were not responsible for helping youIf they do help, consider yourself fortunate.  That mean's NOTHING MORE than what the words say.  It does NOT mean I don't or haven't helped people find their ball.  Fact is, my eye sight is better than most so my ability to track a ball in flight helps others.

I can only speak for myself. College graduate here from University of Utah.  But, I get what you are saying. But how you come off. It’s kinda douchy. It makes others see words that translate into something else. That’s probably why you have to explain yourself over and over again. In this case “choose your words wisely”.

Thanks for the input.  How I come off is driven by the attitude / bias in the head of the reader as he/she reads words, same is true with novels.  If you think I come off as douchey that's your bias talking, you've created an image of me, based an very little 2D data.

I am not on here looking to join some weird social media frat of predisposed people.  I speak truth, whether people like it or not, is up the them.  My business and publishing career, along with civic work has been successful beyond my expectations.  However, my self-esteem and self-image, or mental health is not driven by the need for acceptance by a bunch of social media people that I don't know.  You have a good one.

I cannot help myself...

This is the first chapter of your first post in this thread:

'We may be playing with 3 others, but each of us is responsible for knowing where our ball ends up, sun glasses or not.  No, they were not responsible for helping you.  If they do help, consider yourself fortunate.  Bad taste?  Nope, expectations, yep.'

Now, you fluently dismiss from your post what I already pointed out earlier: 'If they do help, consider yourself fortunate.  Bad taste?  Nope, expectations, yep.'

So talk about bias...

Nah your posts definitely come off as very douchey in this thread. You claim that it's reader bias then immediately launch into a bunch of self platitudes about how successful and wonderful you are.

D-bag move. D-bag post.

Since I'm sure you're going to go off again about reading comprehension and blah blah blah (masters degree over here), please note that I said YOUR POSTS. Not you. Your posts. Nor am I the only one to notice that and point it out. Just take the L and move on.

To the thread at hand - I've always helped strangers I've been partnered with help find their ball. Never have I had someone say "oh no, I'm good, please don't be courteous and polite, it's not needed here, I'll spend some time on my own attempting to find my ball". And I mostly play munis and semis with casual golfers. Quite friendly, those folks. For the most part, anyways.

I have told people not to bother a few times, basically if I *know* I am out and have a provisional in play. I will breeze by the area to see if got lucky or can recover my ball, but don't want to trouble anyone else.

If it's directly into the sun, you should ask them to keep an eye on it before you hit, and then do the same for them. Even people who would otherwise keep an eye on it might be distracted on the tee for that shot.

If I'm on the same side of the hole, I'll help look as long as it wasn't hit off the planet and they want to find it in the forest. I'm not going into any hazards or forest to look. And I'm not going to the other side of the hole to look. My patience to help also fizzles by the time I'm on the final few holes.

If they said they saw your ball, and they were in the same side of the hole, it would have been nice to at least humor you by looking for 30 seconds. But if they were playing from a completely different position, and you asked them again in the fairway and they said they didn't see it, it kinda is what it is. Especially on the 18th hole.

Totally understood, and that's to me a bit of a different scenario than the one posed by the OP whereas you know that your ball is most likely oscar bravo.

  • 2 weeks later...

If there's a lost ball, the playing partners should play their shots first while you're looking and then it would be nice if they could come help (although not obligated I suppose).  Generally tho by that time the "3 minutes" are pretty much up and it's time to move on.  Part of what backs things up is when everybody has to go ball hunting before playing their own shots....

Must be tough being you, but you too could be better.  You'd have to work at it though..  I live and talk by example, NOT internet links or ideals or baloney.  It's good you have moved on.

And perhaps maybe the attitude/bias of the author? I agree that it isn't our responsibility to help others find their golf balls, however, it IS the kind thing to do.

LOL kind... This is a 2-D world that may help define you and others but doesn't define me or what constitutes doing the right thing and good for people.  Golf ball hunting.., joke.

I've actually helped hundreds of people and families, in far more important ways, beyond what the adolescents here hyperbolize over.  But if that's all ya got, have at it.

Wait I have to ask, do you or don't you believe in simple acts of kindness? Example holding a door for someone or waiving someone out to merge into heavy traffic or helping a guy look for his ball for example.

A little bit of attitude/bias on your part, lol. The thread is about helping people find their golf balls, not other activities the members here engage in to help their fellow man. And, I don't see anything wrong with a bit of kindness...how that is 2-D world that defines me (huge assumption/bias on your part), escapes me.

Did you even read my original post?  People act as if I said I NEVER help anyone find their damn ball.  Do I have to reiterate what I said? Maybe it's good that it escapes you.

"Let me repeat for those that funked out or skipped HS the days reading comprehension was taught.  I said: No, they were not responsible for helping youIf they do help, consider yourself fortunate.  That mean's NOTHING MORE than what the words say.  It does NOT mean I don't or haven't helped people find their ball.  Fact is, my eye sight is better than most so my ability to track a ball in flight helps others."

Like I stated before in my earlier post. Choose your words wisely. And honestly, you are just on repeat over and over again trying to explain yourself. And at the same time continue to sound douchy. And it shows cause of all the response you have gotten.
