Ping G425 irons

Ok so I have now played over 50 rounds with the entire G425 lineup. I still have moments where the sound/feel don't match the performance! Perfectly centered hits still clank. But these clubs are high and straight. I am in no hurry to replace them. The hybrids feel fine. High, straight but spinny. That is ok for me as they are very consistent in direction and distance. I carry the 9,7,5 fairways. Same result as the hybrids. I have since replaced the 7 and 9 with the Srixon ZX based on the last years reviews on MGS. They are long and easy to hit but sound like 90s first generation woods. Pingy. Driver is G425 with Autoflex. Amazing.

I am in no hurry to replace these clubs. They have made the game more fun for me. However, I probably will someday if Ping or someone else comes up with something genuinely better {feeling or not}.

Has anyone hit these or play these with the Power Spec loft? If so how was the spin and launch? With the G430 coming out and the lofts being considerably different from the 425 but close to these with power spec I was thinking of just going that direction. Thoughts??

I have them with the Power Spec lofts.  The launch is still super high, especially with the short irons.  The spin is pretty low but given the high descent angle, you don't really notice unless the greens are very hard.

I know this is an old thread. I was a Golf Galaxy yesterday I tried to 430, they also had a new set of 425s on sale.  I hit them both on trackman and actually like the 425s better.
I’m coming from Callaway apex 21s.

I took them for nine holes yesterday I noticed my eight iron was about 15 to 20 yards shorter. I’m thinking it could just be new clubs and learning them. I really like the feel of them.

Check the lofts.  Especially your 8 iron.  I am always amazed how often the lofts are off on a new set of clubs.  For used clubs it is almost a given how often the lies and lofts are off.

Resurrecting an old thread.  I've had the G425s for 2 summers now.  Last night, I played a quick nine that started at about 55 degrees and dropped to upper 40s by the time we finished.  I didn't have 1 shot that felt "flushed" or sounded clean, but they were all solid with normal ball flight and dispersion.  Even my playing partner made a comment about the sound off the face.  Majority of the iron shots even gave me a little "stinger" on the hands.  I shot 38, which is tied for the low round of my life.

I still left the course thinking, I need to look at new irons because I can't stand the feel and sound of these irons.  Am I crazy?  Someone talk me off the ledge...

I guess the G430's are better sounding but I made the switch to PXG Gen 6 XP's and have no regrets at all. I didn't have the G425's before but I've owned almost every G series since the G2's and although I like the looks of the G425's when I tried them I did not like the sound.

Unfortunately I am not the one to talk you off that ledge........played the G425's all year and never quite got used to that crack off the face. Hit plenty of good shots, but never got that good shot feeling, even when hit dead center. No complaints about the forgiveness and performance. Maybe it has to do with the 'fairway wood' construction faces? I don't know.

Also, I came from the 2016 Ping G's,  played since release. Biggest complaint against those was the sound / feel, and that was attributed to the new COR-eye tech that first thinned the faces at the time. I think all the rubber in the next gen G400 cavity backs was meant to rectify that. But, I thought the G's felt fine and could feel where the ball hit the face.

The G430 badging was created to offset the harshness of the G425's. But the new loft gaps are too off putting, so no go for me. Glad I hung on to the G's, the G425's are gonna get a head to head in the near future. Glad that most Ping G irons seem to be made to stand the test of time.

Otherwise may give Srixon ZX4 mkII or Mizuno Hot Medal a spin. Been a G-man for so long (G5 and G15 prior) that it would feel weird to change at this point.

No doubt, while Ping have always made great irons, they have abandoned sound and feel. Every club after the G30 irons have got progressively worse when it comes to sound and feel. It’s a shame because the irons flat out perform. I’m hoping the upcoming I530 will have the performance of the i525 but with good sound and feel.

what ball did you play ?  I game g425’s and during rounds where I hit multiple balls to practice there is a very different sound and feel with a soft ball like a Supersoft, soft feel, B RXS vs say a V1x.

That’s a good point about the ball. I typically have a handful of premium balls in the bag, but I’m not particular about which one I grab during a round. I think I was using a previous gen V1, but typically grab a V1x, looking for more spin.

I think I’m playing again tomorrow with temps in the high 40s. I will do a little comparison to a softer ball.

@erock9174 has a valid point. The season I played the G410's I noticed a vastly improved feel(sound) using a softer ball like a Wilson Duo or Vice Drive.

I have been playing the G410 irons since they came out. I think they are really good feeling irons, with good feedback and they flat out perform. I've heard the complaints about the harsh feel of the recent G offerings. I heard the same thing about the G410's before I bought them too. I do believe a lot has to do with the ball you play.

When I was fitted for my irons the fitter let me hit the current ball I was playing. I was playing the Maxfli Softfli. While demoing the irons I mentioned to the fitter I wasn't experiencing that harsh feel mentioned in a fair amounts of reviews I had read. Even he said a lot had to do with the ball and that I was hitting a softer ball.

The balls I play. Maxfli Softfli, Callaway Chrome Soft, Callaway Supersoft, Srixon Softfeel, Wilson Duo and Elite Fifty. I play these balls because I like how they feel and how they perform for me. I have never thought that I play these type of balls because my irons are harsh feeling. These are the balls I was playing before I bought my G410 irons. I am 63. I understand these type of balls are not for everyone. The Chrome Soft might be a good fit for the younger better golfers looking for a ProV type of ball.

I will try out balls I find on the course from time to time. When I hit a ball that feels hard, harsh off my irons I have always contributed the  result to the ball not my irons. I guess I should blame my irons. Back in the day did you blame the feel of your irons when you hit a Top Flite "rock"or the ball. I know... I am exaggerating things. You should be able to play a ProV and like how it feels off of your G irons. That may not be the case.

As far as playing in colder temps I have always switched to a softer ball because some balls do feel and play different in colder temps. My favorite ball the Chrome Soft is the first to go in colder temps. I feel it feels clicky and doesn't go as far.  I found the Wilson Elite Fifty to be a  good ball when it is colder. It also plays well in the leaves. It doesn't hurt as bad when you can't find your ball in the fairway do to the leaves.

Nothing against Ping...been playing their woods and hybrids for years.

But...Hmm..for the short time I had the G425's (with Recoil graphite shafts) I had absolutely no feel with them but a lot of that I'm sure was the light swingweight.  That is not harsh,  really just no feel or feedback of the ball on club.  And that is coming from (and playing again) Miura PP9003's with steelfiber i70A shafts which give me feel and aren't anything like harsh. Higher swingweight than the G425's with graphite I had.

Had the same issue with the swingweight with Glide 3.0 wedges I got at the same time and they went bye bye also quickly.

My game ball for several years then, and until partway  through this season was the Srixon QStar Tour which as I recall is  a moderate 72 compression.  Switched to the Srixon Soft Feel this year. Still have (I think) better feel with that ball what the club is doing on impact than I had with the G425's.
