It's just SO disappointing to see Yuka Saso and Megha Ganne drop out. With all the sports psychologists in the world, can't players learn to survive pressure?? Don't these girls work on their mental game?

Surely it's not as simple as 'You've got it or you don't...."

As I mentioned in the past, this has been Yuka's bane -- the weekend -- granted, she was leaking oil already yesterday - and not hitting the fairways on the 2nd day eventually caught up to her yesterday... Yuka's only 19 and Ganne 17, so yes, I think I'll give both of them a pass this tournament...

You can employ sport psychologists at any age. I'm running out of sympathy for all these final round crash-outs. There are steps you can take to handle pressure that have been well tested by now.

Nobody saw Arnie's collapse in 1966 after he shot 32 on the front nine and increased his lead from 3 at the start of the round to 7 with only 9 holes to play.

Way too early to call it but I'm pulling like heck for Lexi.

If this week showed any kind of weakness in Lexi, like Saso missing greens but having a short game clinic yesterday, then ok.  But on this course with her length, and her putting pace pretty dialed in, it's not that early of a call.

I didn't know about the Palmer collapse so looked it up.  If what I read was true that he was playing aggressive chasing Hogan's record and firing at pins... Well, I don't know what to say, other than not very smart.  I can't even call that a choke.

More disappointed in USGA / NBC.  Just my opinion, but it seems pretty disrespectful to the women to go from pairings on round 3 and leaders teeing off late to final round threesomes and teeing off  on 1 and 9.  It's like they are lucky to get network TV coverage and use of the course on a Sunday.  "Hurry up and get off the course"

The only difference between today's round (so far) vs. the first three rounds, is that the rough caught up to Yuka.   The previous three days she was not striking the ball very well off of the tee or with her shots into the green.  She managed to escape most of them without any real damage (i.e.: bogeys) and even a couple of birdies.  But the law of averages will catch up and it has so far today.   I don't see any mental collapse per se, perhaps some disheartened play with the putter, but that's about it.

yup fairways were being missed consistently, started to show yesterday, today's just a continuation of the leak... either way, it's been a good tournament for Yuka.  Yuka's weakness has been her putting and her strength, iron play...  which is the complete opposite for Bianca... (I'd rate them even in driving truth be told)..  anyway, it's Shanshan's game to chase Lexi now in my opinion...  and i think this is over (even with 9 holes or so to play)

The course rating was 79.2, but the tournament average has been around 75.00.

It's a tough course and USGA has cut the roughs and shorten the length to make it more playable.

The course rating is 79.2 for the average woman golfer. Little to do with lpga pros. I take it you got that from Ganne posting her round for handicap?

These youngsters are facing the final round pressure at us open for the first time.  You can employ the psychologist all you want but you cannot expect it to work the first time out.

Agreed. This isn't the San Francisco City Championship or the California State Open.

Week in and week out we watch seasoned veterans collapse under the pressure, let alone these youngsters as you mentioned.

Yeah, maybe. But these kind of mental collapses are all too frequent in final rounds. You can't avoid nerves completely or all the time, but you can certainly work on improving things with a good sport psychologist. Specialist psychologists are common right across sport now.

I also wonder whether nerves are actually visible. Actors manage to hide them very well.

Of course.  I most definitely think both Yuka and Megha woke up with nerves.  Even Lexi woke up with nerves ... and nerves standing over the first tee box.

Good point. Psychologists work best when you use them regularly and build up your coping skills from one tournament to the next. You go over what works and what doesn't and steadily build up and refine a routine that works for you in practice. I admit that the US open is much higher on the threat list than your average tournament, but the strategies are largely the same.

US Open might just strike some different nerves for Ganne than her last high school match.

Yesterday was her best day driving the ball ... she actually hit more fairways yesterday than she did on Thursday or Friday.

And unless it's a live performance, actors get mulligans.
