I used to play in a leauge at royal scott in lansing and i swear they never moved the pins at all. Every week the same damn place at lease there trying there

Our course moves the pins once or twice a week and they think I'm nuts when I talk about why they should be moved more.

I've worked maintenance at a golf course before.  We knew if one of our guys had a bad day or wanted to be a clown he would do that.  It's a maintenance "thing".  Don't be too harsh Pepper.  Even superintendents and guys working maintenance have bad days.

Yep, every one has bad days, sh** happens. 🙂But when someone's bad day affects a lot of people or all members, it has to stop...no excuses.

It's been awhile, but yep, there are 7 days in a week.  lol  We had it explained to us in kinda of a unusual way, using 6 days, with one day always being the same, and the other 6 days when the pin is moved to a new section each day.

At my last club I was on the committee to decide if we install GPS in carts.  For GPS with pin positioning and yardage, greens are divided into sections.  So when a GPS shows a pin position, it's really showing the pin in a certain section.  If GPS says its 120 yds to a pin, it's to the center of that days section.  So all the GPS unit is showing is the pin in that days section, and section size varies depending on green size.

I have been told by a couple courses that the cart GPS was to the actual pin location. I asked this because my range finder was always different, sometimes 5 yards or more (1 or 2 might be expected), so I knew something was up. What you say about the GPS yardage to the center of the sections makes a lot of sense as to why there is a difference between a laser and GPS. Thank you for the information.

Yep.  I know some courses say yardage is to the pin as well.  Staff is told that, but I suspect it's not the accurate truth.  It's hard to imagine the cost of GPS satellites being dynamic enough to, each day, find and accurately measure a pin that's been moved 3' on a 5000 sq ft surface.   I play one upscale course that says GPS is to the pin, but it never matches my Garmin Z82 Laser measurement, and doesn't accurately tract each of the golf carts in front of us.

I have Garmin's latest updated Laser/GPS Approach Z82 which says it's accurate to under a 1yd, and Fenix 5x GPS watch makes a similar claim.  GPS is seldom the same as the Laser, but neither is ever outside the size of a green divided into sections.   Then there's the cost of daisy-chaining multiple satellites with GPS systems similar to those used by military to guide Reaper fired Hellfire missiles into targets.

Pvt club members learn that early on.  Also, members rotated taking care of fairway divots on the hole they live on.

THEY WHAT? I think my old members would blow up the maintenance barn if anyone ever suggested such an unwealthy idea lmao (they took away ball washers and yardage stakes because they were for "poor people")

Also, filling fairway divots was the absolute best afternoon job when I worked course maintenance. Take the shoes off, roll the sleeves a bit, throw the headphones in and just dump some mix

I like what our course does with divots.  Every day one of the fairway holes has a rack with bottles of mix.  As you go down the fairway, you fill in divots, put the bottle in the rack at the end.  Par 5s are usually front half one day and back half the next.  This season we've added another rack so each nine has one.  Seems to work out fairly well.

At many courses in Japan, the caddies, kitchen and restaurant staff, office staff, etc., go out in the afternoon with buckets and do something like a "FOD walk" down several fairways each day. A FOD walk is where people walk a runway to check for Foreign Object Debris that could get sucked into engines:

And teenagers playing golf are not allowed to ride in a cart. They have to walk and also carry a big canvas bag of fill.
