Rory still with Cameron putter @ 2021 WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational

Recommended Posts

I'll never understand the narrative that Rory putts better with a blade and it comes up every time he puts one in the bag for a stretch.

Positive strokes gained putting seasons for Rory since 2009:

2012: .058

2014: .274 (12/14 his dominant years)

2018: .060 (First full season with TM)

2019: .425 (Best SG:P season of career and whole year with Spider X)

2021:  .136

His best strokes gained season ever is with the Spider X and contrary to popular belief is actually positive strokes gained putting this season and 3 of 4 full years with TaylorMade putter.

It could be just me.

I see this Scotty switch as a temporary "switch things up". Rory could very well switch back to Spider X after the honeymoon period is over.

There's also no reason TM couldn't build him a one-off like they did when they cloned Tiger's NP2. To date, Rory has basically stayed in milled versions of the stock shapes of TM blades. So rather than him playing a retail like Soto, they could clone the 009-M if he really wanted that.

Taylormade could. Like Nike engineers immediately did after Rory joined Nike.

On the other hand, Rory has been with Taylormade for a few years and still haven't used a carbon copy of Anser. Maybe (I'm purely speculating here) Taylormade said "if you want to use an Anser, just use your Scotty. But we think our putter lineup is superior."

I looked at the data as well....2019 is such a big outlier compared to almost every other season with his putting. It would be interesting to look at all the details for that year....

Strokes gained doesn’t consider “ clutch “ or when it counts putts.  Also. Stokes gained will be better putting wise the worse  you hit it.  If you hit it really close and miss some , the putting stats can/will be terrible.    If you hit it to 30 -40 ft every time and never 3 putt.  Your stats will look about even.  Or barely positive.

it’s impossible to draw a conclusion from  just one strokes gained stat.

really have to include proximity, and strokes gained approach for each.  I’d bet it just shows a wash.  He’s not better or worse with either.  I just feel like his potential to grow confidence in a putting stroke is better with the smaller head. No matter the brand.

TM can build whatever they want, it doesn't mean they are going to use it. Tiger still uses his SC NP2.
