Back to broadcasters.... are people sure Iona Stephen is Scottish?  I always got the sense she was Irish. 

 

Can someone please tell Whitaker that it's Shi-BU-no, Not SHI-buno?  Even the other announcers are pronouncing it properly yet she carries on with it.

Are you sure? I checked out the pronunciation on an Asian golf commentary and they pronounced it SHI-buno Hinako

Hmmm, interesting.  Shi-BU-no seems to roll off the tongue better, but, being from the other side of the world, I guess it's different.

 

So I would be curious how they pronounce Ohtani....

She grew on me when she became more of a host rather than an analyst.  But have to agree with whomever said about female Aussie accents.  Maybe it's the announcers having a bit deeper voices but they all seem to sound like they are 55 years old.

I stand corrected.  As I said, to my ear it sounds better the other way, but if that is how it's pronounced....  I would owe Whitaker an apology, and the rest of the media is lazy.

It was me that said that.

 

Some accents naturally sound more masculine (think German) and feminine (think French).

 

Australian (especially the 'Strine' exaggerated Aussie accent) is a little better spoken by men, at least how it sounds to me.

 

No-one wants to hear a female Crocodile Dundee.

She played the part with an American accent, I think a New York one (from memory).

 

All Aussie actors take to US/UK accents due to family backgrounds and watching US/UK entertainment.

Japanese syllables are two letter sounds that end in a vowel sound, except for an "n" sound at the end of some words. Each syllable is pronounced distinctly and are flat. They are not sing-song, like other languages - going up on the second syllable, then down. And two are not blended together into a fast, single sound.

 

So her given name is "shi bu no" and flat, with no emphasis.

 

And Aussies have a unique ability to butcher the Japanese language like no other nationality on the planet. 🙂

 

Good morning is "ohayou gozaimus" and pronounced "oh ha yo-(long oh sound) go za i (pronounced ee) ma su. All together and with no emphasis on any syllable. There is no pause between the words, either. When written in Japanese, the words are not spaced.

 

You can tell an Aussie trying to speak Japanese, because they will pronounce it: oh high yo u go zoi ma su, (mate...)

 

And the city of Tokyo is pronounced toh- kyoh- (long o and the kyo is long and not "key oh" it's a single sound. It's not pronounced with three separate sounds like everyone in the world does - "to key oh. It's two sounds that are long on each one.

 

(Bonus tip: when written in roman letters (romaji) i is pronounced like ee and e is pronounced like eh. So, Ikea is a perfect example. In the US and other English speaking countries people will say eye key ya. In the original Swedish and Japanese, it's pronounced ee ke ya.)
