Ping g20 Hybrid... keeps coming back. Anyone else

Hi All

Well as the title states, these pesky hybrids keep coming back into my bag.
A little back story I first got these in 2011 when my county team was affiliated with ping shall we say. I have tried the latest and greatest, this season has been a ping G410 19* paired with a Fujikura pro 2.0 8x. It has been hit or miss (mostly miss)Went for a fitting for the new G425 but I took my g20s along aswell ( still have them.) Well I just could not beat the numbers with my 20* and 23* G20 hybrids so much so that I have put them back in the bag and dropped my 4 iron. I can flight them super High. Hit low bullets (play in scotland so need them) Fade, Draw. You name it . It was definitely swinging an old friend that I think will be there to stay.

I play to a reasonable standard these days. 2 HI. But I reckon I can get back to the glory days with these back in the bag.

Anyone else have this experience with G20 hybrids. Or have a club that finds itself back into the bag.

Thanks

I don’t have the G20s but I still have the G20’s brother, the i20. Like the G20, they are amazingly versatile.
I think the i and G were essentially the same club with the i just being a tad smaller and a degree weaker? Both i and G are great clubs!

The g20 was more iron like, alot of offset which seemed to put alot of people off. But I love the look.

I am still playing mine. I have had them since release and nothing else plays the same. They are flat faced like an iron but launch high and land soft like a wood. I do not have any problems with them going left on me and work well from any lie. What more could one want besides not looking like a big toe...

Yeh. I played them from 2011 until 2017. Then wanted to try the latest and greatest. But the shape, the flat lie angle and iron like face as you have said. There are just such a solid hybrid. I might pick up some backups as mine are getting a wee bit worn out.

I have the 3 (20), 4 (23), and 5 (27). I custom built them with the best hybrid shaft of all time IMO (Matrix OZIK Altus). I do not always have the 5 in the bag as I can still hit my 5 iron pretty good, but there are times (winter) when I like more carry and it is so much fun to hit.  I have even considered finding a 6 (31) and shafting it up with an Altus for later when I loose more swing speed, but they are hard to find in good condition.

I too have been tempted over the years by the latest and greatest only to come back to my trusted G20s. The others may be longer and stronger, but that is not what I need in a hybrid. I need it to go the distance I need and I can trust these to do just that, time after time. I have hit so many great shots with them, they are like best friends that I will keep as long as possible.

You can bend them for loft and lie like an iron and the cambered sole makes them so versatile in a variety of lies. You can even custom swing weight them by opening the screw on the heal and adding some hot melt. With a GI Iron like look and the weight plug way out on the toe, they are truly a one of a kind design that will never be duplicated.

Yeh this was my thinking exactly. Basically how you have put it. Going back to these just make sense. I really think that there will not be another hybrid made like at all.

I am contemplating picking up some decent condition heads (20* and 23*) and sticking tour AD DI utility iron shafts in them as they are the same hotel bore.

For someone who has always played small headed irons. Currently iblades, these just seem to suit my swing and I really feel confident over the ball.

My friend has one in his backup bag. I used to make fun of him because I thought it was so ugly. That changed when I finally hit the thing. The club is stupid easy to hit and feels great from what I remember. You literally cannot miss with this club and that could be very useful on long par 3s. I don't really need it but I'm sill trying to work out a trade so I can acquire his.

I think alot of people ruled them out because its not what you call "traditional" but the thing just flat out performs.

Alot of my golf buddies always laugh when I pull out the 23* then smoke it 210 down the middle 🤣🤣, they also then want to try it.

For some strange reason I hook hybrids. ANY hybrid. I think every one I have hit just have too much offset for me. I am packing 7 & 9 M6 fairway woods these days, a lot more user friendly for me.

I used to think that about offset, but offset doesn't cause hooking. It's there to promote a higher launch. That's why alot of game improvement irons have high offset.

I hook nearly every hybrid I've played. Except these. Which have the most offset ever in a hybrid.

The G20 is an acquired taste, but those who love them, swear by them.  I've played PING hybrids forever.  IMO, there is no linear improvement by line. Some are good, some are meh.  The G25 and I15 were a couple of my favorite. I couldn't get down with the looks of the G20. The Rapture was a classic.  The G410 was solid. I just got the G425. KInda wish I'd kept the G25.

Yeh I think you have knocked the nail on the head with that comment. Ping do just make solid hybrids. I just find for my game. I will just take the consistency of the g20s.

I did like the anser hybrids. But could get some knuckleballs with them.

I have similar thoughts about the g15! I have 17,20 and 23 degrees. Though the 17 has to fight a g400 5 wood and a Rapture 2 iron for a place in the bag. I just prefer the aesthetic compared to a ‘wood’ shaped hybrid

Yeh I think this is my take on it aswell. With the wood shaped ones I think I get too sweepey, which causes me to turn it over to much. I used to play the rapture 2 iron aswell. Think it was pings best utility iron compared to the crossover.

I loved my G15's, but after I went away from them, I tried to come back and the offset was a killer for me. Also tried the Tour Edge iron-woods, but no luck there either. Went even further back to the G10's, and settled in on the G30 which has been very solidly in my bag for the last year.

Lots of fond memories with the G15's. If I could get past the offset I'd probably give them another shot at making the bag.

I agree, newer is not always better and I wasn't a big fan of the turbulators. I enjoyed the g20's but the 25's just suit my eye better.

If  the 20's work stick with them.
