The 150th Open at St Andrews

Recommended Posts

Since this category falls into "travel", I'm posting to get the local help.

I just got the tickets for the Open and have no idea where to stay and how to get around.

I assume staying in St Andrews will be nearly impossible because of the price.

So maybe a daytrip from Edinburgh or Dundee?

We'll be on the road before or after Ireland trip, so most likely just attend one day.

Thank you for your help in advance!

We played up at St Andrews in August, drove up there (400 miles from my house) and stayed at a pub/ hotel in Dundee. It was a comfortable 25/30 minute drive to St Andrews every day. Obviously I don’t know what it’ll be like during Open week, but hope that helps a little.

Book early would be the only real advice

You prob still have a couple options. Check on Airbnb or look into some b&b. I also have a contact for apt rentals if needed.

Have you checked AirBnb? St Andrews is also a University city/town, which means many students have rooms on AirBnb to make extra money. When I went there I stayed in one of those (although I only used it for 4 hours, the rest of the time I was on the golf course/pubs/town, but that's another story 🙂 ).

Are you looking to take the train to St andrews the day you will attend the tournament? If so you should look for An airbnb in one of the towns along the Edinboro to st A route…

we took the train from Elie to the Open at Muirfield and it was very well organized…

I like this idea since car ride will be a terrible idea.

Thank you!

I was working and staying in Dundee in October 2012 during the time that the Dunhill tournament was being played at St. Andrews, Kingsbarn, and Carnoustie.

The drive from Dundee to St. Andrews was easy.   The parking lot (car park) for vehicles at St. Andrews was on the Dundee side of the entire St. Andrews facility, making it especially easy to get to the tournament and get back to my hotel in Dundee.

Yes, the crowds for the Open will be much larger than those at the Dunhill.   But, Dundee is an excellent choice to stay, with plenty of pubs and restaurants.

I'm following this topic because I got tickets in the ballot too and am trying to figure out travel plans.

Already very helpful.

So you got tickets thru the One Club ballot? My application said it wouldn't be announced until late October/early Nov - so you had already heard by Oct 20?

I've heard nothing...so they don't even both to follow-up if you didn't get tickets? I rec'd no "we're sorry" email (like I do from Augusta every year!)

I heard November 8.  Seems odd as well, lol.  Maybe I got tickets because someone didn't pony up, hahaha.

The whole "One Club" thing leaves a bit of a sour taste in the mouth for me.  It was promoted originally as a means of getting tickets to The Open, there was no selection process anticipated for the 150th and this selection process wasn't a lottery in any sense, there was intentional selection with whatever guidelines they were using, some they described vaguely and no comment on that.  I only signed up a few years ago with the idea of getting tickets to the 150th and of course that went out the window with the postponement and still uncertainty IMO over next year.  Still, I got some practice round tickets, doubtful if I'll use them - really haven't felt comfortable planning any kind of a trip for 2022 to Scotland.

Agree, I wasn't 100% that I would go.

Currently on my 1st Intl trip in 18 months - to Dubai & Abu Dhabi and it is going reasonably well.

Have hopes that next summer can be "relatively" normal, with some limitations.

Will see...

Log onto your account and look at the top right corner in your shopping basket. If you did get chosen, they will be there even if they aren't in an email to you yet. Let me know if you happen to need some. Ended up with some extras.

I think our group is staying west and playing quite a few rounds before attending the practice rounds a couple of days. Looking like Prestwick, Turnberry, Gailes, Western Gailes and Dundolald so far.

I meant to reply to this earlier but haven't been on the forums in a few weeks.

Yes, I got tickets through the One Club ballot.  I received notification in October for practice round and Thursday/Friday tournament rounds. I then got another notification in November for Saturday/Sunday tournament rounds. So I'm guessing they had multiple draws.

I think I read somewhere that they prioritized applications that included kids, and I had requested a youth ticket for each day. So maybe that helped my chances.

They also mentioned there would be a platform to resell tickets in January, but they weren't allowing resale above face value. I'm guessing there will be more options there for anybody who didn't get tickets in the lottery.

Our foursome didn’t get tickets in the lottery, so are still looking to buy tickets for Thursday-Sunday..  contact me if you have some to sell.  We never had a problem getting tickets for the Open in SA in 2010 and 2015.  [email protected]

We'll be attending Saturday, Sunday and promised our travel agent for Wednesday-Friday tickets.
Sorry I don't have any extra and hope you found tickets else where.
