It looks like they were dunked or maybe wiped down with something corrosive/acidic? Like an attempt to strip them raw gone wrong/incomplete.

Maybe sanded down with some fine sandpaper before the corrosive dunk, since the SM9 logo and the chrome strip seems untouched by this process.

His dip in form had nothing to do with a club change. He's been very open about his struggles with alcohol and leaving it behind.

Thats what I love about Kirk. He is open about his addiction and what he had to go through. If you aren’t the face for the Tour and always in the tope 20 in the world you are a nobody. Hope Kirk wins and enjoys tinkering as much as we do. 
I had hoped those Protos would have stayed in the bag.
