Need to cut Rickie some slack here - he just finished T5 at LACC and heading to Hoylake where he was T2 in 2014 (to Rory). Seems like he is headed out of the wilderness to greater things with his game - so a bit of positivity please!

He is playing much better now and probably will win soon.  But he remains the most overrated pro on tour today.

overrated in what sense?  relative to publicity?   it's not his fault he's actually got charisma, in fact more power to him.

I'm also going to post this again because those calling him overrated don't seem to understand how consistently good he was (except for the noted lack of winning):

After the weekend display at The Los Angeles Country Club, the divide between Jay Don Blake and Fowler is now completely evident.

Knowing Jay Don's game, in the same position as Rickie, he would have followed the 62 with 68,67,67.

At this point he needs to stop trying to be the next Jay Don Blake ...there will only ever be one Sir JDB. He needs to accept this and focus on being the best version of himself. jmho

Old men were wearing orange outfits....  he's been a good player, yes, but the publicity was not due to performance.  He's had a better career than Anna Kournikova, but the situations are similar.  A lot more endorsement money/notoriety/publicity than the record would suggest is in order.

not even in the same universe as her.   I guess I'll repeat this.  He was in the top 50 for 11 straight years.  In the middle of that, he was in the top 10 for essentially five straight years.  He's 14th on all time PGA money list.  Yes, that skews to recent players due to purses obviously but he's 14th while doing little in the last three years or so until now:

From 1996 to 2003 Kournikova had a worst high ranking of 56 during the individual years, including 4 where she was in the top 10.  Tennis being more grueling than golf, injuries caught up with her(although she was a very strong doubles player).  Tennis rankings are also much more "direct".  You have to match your performance in the previous year's tournament to keep the points(ie you won last year, you better win again or you will drop in the rankings just by virtue of losing those points.)  But sure, not the same universe.

Women's tennis doesn't have nearly the depth of PGA golf.  It's a poor comparison just to take one ranking against the other.   Either way, I didn't mean to turn this into an Anna vs. Rickie battle.  Rickie's numbers speak for itself.  And if his endorsements outpace his performance, which I don't necessarily disagree with, it's because the dude isn't bland like 75% of the tour.

Nobody said it was his fault, but the fact is his exposure far exceeds his accomplishments.

  1. He has five PGAT wins after 14 years on tour.
  2. His win rate is about 1.7%
  3. He is zero for 48 in majors.
  4. Other players with five wins and no majors are Scott Verplank, Tom Purtzer, Billy Mayfair, Dan Forsman, Jerry Heard, Mark Wilson, and many others.

So, IMHO, he is the most overrated pro on tour.

What is Fowler?  34?  I think he’ll end up matching in the 2nd half of his career what he did in the first half.  Might even back door his way into a major.  The dude was humbled pretty hard and I suspect he learned alot.

Prior to the slump Fowler had a similar success level to Kuchar; roughly win every other year and usually on the national teams.  Obviously Kuch had his shot at a major and had it ripped away from him by a special player.  Fowler may end up with the same opportunity.

I do think it's telling that despite one of his best most consistent seasons he really hasn't had a chance to win anything on the back 9 on Sunday since Zozo.

Jay Don Blake is a pro golfer on the PGA Tour that calls St. George, Utah home. His new BobCat XL is powered by a JetCat P-120 and was finished by Ken Fiala. The custom paint was done by Brian VanHouton, a local painter who specializes in cars and motorcycles.
