Why would they be intent then to continue the Bobby Jones position regarding half par holes, especially the par fives?

Half par holes may be the most exciting in pro golf.  Here are some great examples;

  • #17 at TPC Scottsdale.
  • #15 at TPC River Highlands
  • #10 at Riviera
  • #13 at Austin CC

#13 at ANGC is right up there on the excitement scale.

You realize, don't you, that the course is closed after the Masters for several months?

Explain why those who went for green on 15 on their 3rd shot had a lower scoring average of 5.0 vs 5.2 for those going for it in two last year? There is more variance with the risk reward of a 3. Now everyone just plays for par and hope to make a 15 footer for a 4. You can try and explain it anyway you want but 3 shot par 5 are boring holes.

A 3 shot par 5 might be boring to you but how is the hole supposed to be played? What was the intent behind the architecture?

What does this discussion come from, further back in the thread? Will the lengthening of the 13 make it a 3-shotter and not a risk/reward?

So from what I’m understanding the debate is over how the hole plays currently vs how it was designed to play.

So what persuades you to lay up on No. 13 is not just the length of the carry; it’s the awkward fit between the right-to-left canted fairway and the left-to-right angled green. This is why the second shot sometimes entails a “momentous decision,” to use Bobby Jones’s famous phrase.

That is a quote from someone who might know something about the hole.

Perhaps it balances the risk/reward part of it for their target golfer.  You are asking the golfer to make two decisions here (ideally at the tee and again when he sizes up his approach).

  1. If I go for it in two, do I stand a better chance at getting a 3 or 4 or something else?
  2. Is the uncertainty of my chance at getting a 3 or 4 still outweighed by the relative certainty of not getting worse than a 5 (and certainly not more than a 6)?

If the risk/reward is not balanced, there is really no need to worry too much about question 2.  And it doesn't matter which way the risk/reward proportion is slanted, the effect is the same.

Personally, if I wanted to make any changes to this hole, I would still keep the defense at the green and keep with the overall "theme" of the course being realtively easy driving and hard greens and surrounds.  I would find a way to get those back and left bunkers more into play, particularly when the green is being played to with a wood or long iron.  Now the player who has went for it in two shots and not properly executed is faced with a bunker shot to speedy green with a creek beyond.  As I understand it the green cants back to front an left to right, just the angle that would accept and hold a longer draw played to it.

I can’t believe that guys who said “i would love to post my pictures” never did. I bet his phone that had them on it fell into the ocean when he was playing at Cypress. Shucks!

Yeah, after my round at Cypress, I was leaning out the window of my private helicopter taking a picture of the course, and, wouldn't you know it?

Dropped my phone!

I'm not sure how any of it works.  I don't even know how many people were there.  They stayed in the cabins on property.   I don't really ask specifics, as these clubs, particularly Augusta, don't really want any of this information out there.  He was invited by another well known CEO who is a member.  He has had a good golfing year, as he also played in a member-guest event at Cypress Point this year.

What I have learned is that there is a group of top level Fortune 100 CEO's who love golf and collect memberships like baseball cards.  They all get each other into these clubs, so they all belong to anywhere from 2-10 of the top 20 clubs in the country.  A very different world.

its a super small golf world

It appears to be fencing rather than a wall. If you zoom in, you can see the trees and bushes through it.

Is the road Yorkshire Drive? Because this shot from Google Maps suggests it might be difficult to drive to that particular part of the course. Not sure when the aerial photo was taken, though.

Behind the new tee is Augusta Country Club, from which ANGC bought the land.  Pretty hard to get back there without knowing security at ACC.

I think that ANGC will get the 13th hole playing the way they desire, after the pros have played there a bit.  They may not play it from all the way back, especially if it is cold and windy.  We'll see how they set it up.

Finau actually played it and under soft conditions and said 2nd shot was 3i

and 4i the two times he played it at 545. Normally a 7, and he expects no more than 2 clubs more under faster conditions than normal. So he’s likely hitting 5 or 6, big deal. More element of risk, and agree it shouldn’t be an “expected” birdie. They’re pros, challenge them a little!
