*Graphite Design Lovers Anonymous* Tour AD UB vs IZ vs XC and NOW vs TP! ...and HD....and VR

I can't name how many shafts I've gone through only to end up right back with the AD DI in my "green finder" wood

It's genuinely incredible how smooth the impact feels

I love it in my driver too, but I would say that I like the HD just a little bit better

I prefer the HD over the DI as someone who's played the DI for many years.  HD is smoother, more linear, doesn't kick like a mule and more stable for me.  I had it for a minute but ultimately ended up with the VF.

I played the VF for a while and really liked it when I'm feeling fresh, but I could definitely feel the drop-off in performance if I wasn't feeling my driver 100%

Also worth nothing that I hit down on my driver (or at absolute best get close to 0), so a low spinning, low launch shaft ends up producing these low bullets for me that tend to be very accurate but a bit short in wetter conditions or longer grass

The HD to me is that perfect middle ground, but definitely feels closer to the DI than the VF

Just got my AD XC 6 stiff! The waggle feel is really good and lighter than my previous hzrdus setup, we shall see what on course results we can card!

I’ve found it to be better than the VF for me, but sneaky long.  The softer handle is what gives the XC that feeling.

It's not often I say that a shaft is epic.  VF is epic.  Finally a low/low shaft from GD that's stable, has a firm enough handle and ultra smooth.  Can I get credit for making you a convert?  Lol.

Yes you get 1000% credit, thank you. I like it so much I am tempted to try to play a 3wood again... The dispersion for me is just off the charts. I have a quick pull in transition (not good) and the VF handles it perfectly. It stays with me and has the perfect slow release, the ventus TR Blue was close but dispersion was poor at times. The Ventus Black or other low/low shafts always seemed like the tip never caught up to me and the VF does time after time.

I'm glad the VF is a great match for you.  I want to pick one up for 3 metal as well.  I'm still trying to source an 8TX though as it's tour only atm.  Also, check your PM box.

Well oddly enough I am all AD UB right now. I feel like one of those guys with AD DI all over the bag.

I didnt like it in driver after testing the CQ but i went through another swing change this month and the AD UB has come alive for me. First it was in fairways and then back in for driver. IMO the UB works better if you are NOT a 'pull the handle' person and you lead with your lower body which is exactly what I've been working on.

And, in the odd category, I'm going 6-6-8 in weights in 1-3-5 woods. I'm playing my 3/5 short and I dont mind the weight gap at all. Working really well so far.

Are you playing UB tipped in driver, or straight in?  I should leave well enough alone, and just shave 1/2" off the handle to tighten up face contact.

Straight in, and already butt trimmed @ 45" play length.

I'm actually testing out a 440cc driver @ 43.75" soon as well which is where the .5" tipped CQ shaft went.

Thank you!  Yeah, I do better with 44.5-44.75, and the UB is currently over 45".

Ok

Great thread here

need some advice

have a 7 w with a DI-7s untipped in it.   Love the feel and release

4 wood I have struggled with getting similar feeling

how would you rank

1). DI-6s

2) UB-6s

3) VR-6s

assume cs around 100mph / miss to manage is over-draw

much appreciated

UB feels more linear compared to the DI.  You won't feel it kick much at all unlike the DI which kicks like a mule.  It launches lower and spins just just a touch less for me.  VR and DI are similar in terms of launch/spin but they differ in that VR has slightly less kick.

and I assume something like a VF-6sr would kick even less than VR-6s
compared to the DI?

I've noticed that with GD shafts the stiffer the flex the less kick is has in general, although it's very slight.  You may or may not even notice it.

And don't forget the IZ, and TP, and HD, which can also be considered...can make your head spin and wallet hurt. I was able to get some good prices off ebay and the like on an IZ, HD, VR and UB (all 6S) to try for my Ping G430 driver.

Did not like the UB (two-way miss) and sent that back. The IZ, VR and HD are all similar and great shafts. I the HD more difficult to turn over than the VR and IZ. All seem to spin and launch somewhat similar. IZ and VR are both terrific shafts, and I seem to be favoring the VR for the moment. YMMV.

Have had the XC 6x for 2 days now, coming from 6x DI. I was spinning the DI too much. XC lowered spin, lowered flight slightly and feels stable yet smooth. Very pleased so far.

Is the handle softness/stiffness to your liking?

Yes handle is perfect and it’s much better in the wind as well. Only a very short period of time with it so far so unsure but I hit some bombs with the di when there was no wind. Interested to see if I can get that much out of the xc

Do I have this thinking correct...

Outside of CQ, the highest, on balance, launch and spinning shaft is the DI, followed by the IQ...then maybe the UB?.....then VR?.......do I have that about right?

appreciated huge

thank you

Not sure if this will work, but I had compiled many of the GD charts that are circulating. It is really worth a look to see where their different shafts fall in the launch/spin/bias, etc. windows. The chart with the different stiffness of the butt/mid/tip is particularly relevant for what might work for you.

I typically play a bit of a fade. No major slices, no major hooks. With the IZ and HD 6S, my fade is accentuated. The VR just seems to mesh with my swing, and has been wonderful in both my driver and 3 wood.

The results match up with that chart I posted that the VR is easier to turn over. YMMV.

The profile of the VR and IZ seem very similar(firm/medium/firm). What would make the VR easier to turn over or more draw biased than the IZ?

I suppose the tip stiffness, perhaps? If you look at the chart I posted above, the VR tip is Firm, and the IZ tip is Firm+ (as is the HD).

Again, all of these profiles are quite similar, but GD makes subtle changes in each shaft to differentiate them. I find the HD, IZ and VR to be similar in launch and spin, and could play any of them. But the VR is the best for me.

The VR and IZ seem like a traditional blue profile with firmer/softer/firmer like a Ventus Blue.
