Working on path my dispersion & spin improved, big jump in ball speed and much cleaner through the turf.  Pro liked me better in the Srixon but said it’s worth revisiting as my path improves.  

 

Still like the i230 but not making any changes at the moment.  I do slightly prefer the shape of the Srixon’s. 
 

I did hit my Pro’s 24 Apex CB. It’s a nice one too.

were you hitting off turf or mats?  Zx7 sole is love or hate.  I loved it off a mat and it gave me indoor numbers that no other club could beat (high ball speed and optimal spin).  I never could figure it out off grass.

Can anyone comment on how noticeable the offset changes visually from address when going to power spec in the i230?  I've played a set 5-U all season and loved them.  However, now that it's offseason tinkering time, I'm considering power spec to get some more pop out of the mid irons so I can gap a little better from 7 iron down into my fairway metals.  I love the look from address in standard spec, and my concern with power spec is the added offset might be off-putting and stoke some fears of the left miss.

Im pretty sensitive to offset and in general don’t like it.

 

that being said I didn’t really notice a difference between power spec and standard spec offset in my I210s.

I don't like offset and I have the 7-PW in Power Spec. I don't have any complaints with the offset on them. I did previously have the 5 & 6 iron in power spec though and I didn't care for them. I don't know why Ping goes so aggressive with the offset progression in the longer irons.

Played i230 for the first time today (105 S300) and found ball flight to be too high, which caused at least 10 yards loss in distance. Also, R105 stiff shaft felt just like regular shaft. 
 

I am thinking about going power spec to gain a bit more distance.

I am thinking about giving the i230 a go. My main concern is the high CG. As a picker, my miss is a bit thin and I'm working on getting a bit steeper. My club is fully paspalum which tends to give you more "spongy"  fairway lies so a club with a higher CG might be better when struck well. 

 

How do these perform on thin strikes?

I would say while they measure with a high cog, they perform much more like a low cog, high moi iron.  They launch and spin the ball high for the category of iron it is.

I made it to Golf Galaxy yesterday and hit the i230 with X100 and thought they were nice! Once I got warmed up, the ball speed was great (passive brag 130 mph) and the spin was in the mid-high 6k's. I don't see them being any better or worse than my current T100 irons which is a good thing! 

 

I didn't have my club or the time to do a proper head to head but thought they were great! I may do a proper iron fitting in the near future and will definitely consider these.

I ordered a set of 5 - U wedge with Recoil Dart 75's in F2 flex (+ 1/2") four weeks ago yesterday and was told two weeks which did not happen.

 

Called the shop on Monday and they were told by Ping that the all the clubs were built except for the seven iron as they were out of seven iron shafts.  

 

They said they could ship what was built but all the seven iron shafts got used up in fitting carts which seems a little bizarre.

 

I mean every manufacturer on earth has been using seven irons in their fitting carts since the beginning of fitting systems so why wouldn't that have factored that into their initial ordering of shafts?

 

At any rate I told them to ship what they had but have yet to receive a shipping notification.

First time I've ever heard of a Superintendent running the course as a head pro. Guess if he can manage then why not, until someone is found.

 Yeah it's saving them a chunk of money and with winter on the doorstep I guess why not?

 

Of course this is a facility that since covid still has never even reopened its food and beverage operation on weekends for cryin' out loud.

 

You can get a can of beer, soda or a bottle of water out of the little refrigerator behind the pro shop counter and that's it.

 

Burgers and stuff is available Monday thru Friday from 11:00 - 1:30.

 

Pretty nice little eighteen hole golf course too.

 

Patrons don't seem to mind since they pretty much all just bring their own coolers and nobody seems to care.

It's a big reason why these irons are staying in my bag. Thin strikes are slightly punished but playable.

I ordered mine from Discount Dan’s on October 16th.  They got them from PING in 2 weeks and then they shipped them on to me.

I find my i230’s to be more draw biased than my i200’s.  Thinking of flattening lie by a degree.  Anyone else notice this?

I found quite the opposite. The extra toe weight made them more fade bias for me. You could always add a heavier toe weight.

I hit these at the range today after an injury layoff (knee is still really sore) and they are amazingly forgiving for their size.

 

I was getting a bit annoyed at my inability to strike it anywhere near the middle and all the funky ball flights I was producing, but then I realised that the dispersion was good considering the mess of a swing I was putting on it.

Yes - these are my new irons for the next 10+ years (until the grooves wear out). So I feel like this is likely the graph that'll win the most fans (new irons first round was September 1). The below turned into a bit of an essay!

 

So it's worth noting I was coming back from a LONG layoff from golf at the beginning of this graph (the 110 was my first time ever playing a championship course and it was a bit of an OB party at times...). This week I shot my lowest ever round of 79 and didn't feel like I even played that well on the day - but i did score very well.

 

I'll try to summarize a few thoughts:

 

Things I love:

• Trajectory and spin - I was going from literally 20yr old irons in regular shaft flex, and so upgrading to stiff KBS tour shafts and modern technology was literally like flipping on a light switch. These rocket up into the sky, and land extremely softly. With anything shorter than 7i it is not uncommon for them to stop within 1-2ft of the pitch mark. 5i and 6i are usually anywhere from 5-15ft depending on the green conditions and my quality of strike.
• True to distance - Unless I goof on wind or elevation change, these things fly true to their distance within 5-7 yards every single time. Thin shots will lose directional control a bit, but I'm almost always pin high and either just off the green or on the fringe. Fat shots still manage to get up there, and I'm often putting or chipping from just short of the green.
• Contact out of the wet/rough - They feel like absolute scalpels out of bad lies and the rough. Even if the rough and ball are soaking wet, I am yet to catch anything resembling a flyer, and the only times I go long are if I think the grass will grab the hosel more than it does, and I end up getting a clean strike and have overclubbed. It does feel like these shed water very similar to the Glide wedges.
• Face feedback - Coming from cavity backs, these clubs tell me everything I need to know on strike location without feeling painful in ~30º weather.

 

Things that took/still take work:

• Caveat that much of this is perhaps a "me thing" or coming from old irons, vs these clubs and just things I am generally working on.
• Bedding in period - as a couple of others in this thread can attest (through my complaining), I definitely had an initial period where I was really worried the investment wasn't paying off. I felt all over the map on direction (questioned the lie angle choice by my fitter), and distance would be 20-30yd ranges. For me the key was trusting the process and playing lots of rounds to understand turf interaction. I think at the beginning I was trying to slam them like a distance competition, vs letting the club do the work. I do feel I get better results when I put an assertive, aggressive swing on them.
• Chipping - My old 7i was my standard chip and run club and it had been for a very long time. It took a good amount of time to figure out the equivalent i230 club, and I think some of that is down to them being a bit more sensitive to lie on touch shots. I tend to find my 8i is now my go to for shots that run out, but depending on the lie I'll also take 9i or PW to get the same effect. This could be a product of better golfing IQ, but I say this more as a "mess around and find out" if you're having a hard time chipping.
• Wedge touch - I do find the UW to be a full shot only club for me. I have tried 3/4 shots but feel right now I'm way too inconsistent on quality of contact. That may be the stiffer shaft, bounce - I don't know - but when things get "touch-y" I always reach for the Cleveland RTXs.
• Long irons - I went 4-UW and for me the 4i is just too penal on mis-strikes. I have gotten very solid with the 5i and it's rare I can't get it 175-185yds with a nice trajectory, but a couple of months ago I went to a G425 4-hybrid and it has become my stock 200yd club, with the 4i chilling in my closet.
• Ball flight/distance loss - For me there was an early period where I felt like I went from crispy shots to high floaty ones and lost maybe 10-15yds off of what I was getting initially with the irons. I think a lot of this was not trusting my distance selection, and either backing off shots or just not committing through the strike. But I would say for me the miss is short if I don't commit.
• Low point/turf interaction - I have seen massive gains in even just my last 2-3 rounds with working consistently on low-point control with the DivotBoard. Oddly enough I have found I don't really take divots with the i230s and as a result will often sweep the turf on my practice swing, but then chunk my real swing. The sole feels wide to me (again, 2001 technology vs 2022), and so before I was concretely focusing on trapping the ball, I would get a bit of variability on turf/ball interaction. Now with the divot board I'm getting way more consistency in making sure low point is right after the ball, which has tightened up both left/right and front/back dispersion even more.

 

I can't say the i230s were responsible for breaking 80, but they definitely played a significant part. I have zero regrets and couldn't be happier!

PING i230 sure seem to bring in the buzz as I have always wondered why they are so popular. It's easy I'm sure its because they are that good. This is as close as I came to getting them. I order some i525's 6-PW from PING and once they arrived I wanted the 5 iron. PING mistakenly sent me an i230 5 iron as OK it was an error nobody is perfect but would I really like how it  looked and felt but never hit it. PING took care of the problem and had me an i525 5 iron in 3 days. Pretty darn quick. 

The when I read these thread about how nice the feel better than the i525's and they are not even forged made me wondering more but I never pulled the trigger as there was just something about that tiny gap in the back of the badge that turned me off. Oh well glad they are as popular as they are as PING does make some fantastic equipment and so does just about everyone else too.
