Does anyone’s “soft” putter not feel “soft” all the time?

I have been through a ton of putters that I have either tried or read about on here that we’re “so soft” feeling and they were, however not all the time. I know the ball matters and strike matters but has anyone had a putter that feels soft most of the time but every now and then feels clicky or “hard”. Or maybe a putter that always feels soft no matter we’re you hit it on the face. 

 
Basically I’m asking if your “soft” putter is always “soft” for you or only when you hit it just right.

Mine feels hard all the time because I'm a terrible putter and somehow manage to miss the sweet spot more than I hit it.  I don't even know how that's possible but I do it... A lot.

You must hit sweet spot to feel soft and pure roll on any really good putter, at least 90% of dead center

I use a Scotty Cameron Special Select Newport and it feels great when hit on or near the center.  If I hit it high, low, or wide on the face its not as nice a feel. Just like puring an iron shot vs missing the sweet spot.

I'd have to put my 2021 Bettinardi Studio Stocks as one of the softest putters available anywhere. Thing is like a trampoline. But, it's also a very small headed stick.

 

As a result, if you catch the ball a grove or two low, or outside of the center of the face, and you are going to feel it.

 

That, ultimately is what I like about it. It lets you know, every time, exactly how you messed up that stroke. Real confidence builder. 🙂

I don't think my putter feels as soft when it's cold out. I don't know if that's bc my hands are cold, the ball is cold, the putter is cold, or some combo of the 3.

 

Same with rounds on slow greens, but that's probably bc I'm actually just hitting it harder than normal.

Ball matters... most putters feel ok. If you miss strike it though u will allways feel that more harsh feeling. Not a big deal. Im use to it because i personally never try to strike dead center all the time. Im more focused on speed and line. I cant do that and stike center face on perpous lol it seems to work for me though. I think as long as your putter has good forgiveness your putt will stay on-line and enough speed. Softest feeling putter ive ever hit without feeling dead is odyssey o works.

If you are using an insert putter and hit near the edge of the insert it's going to feel firmer. Your only going to get soft around the sweet spot, any where besides that no telling how it could feel.

The ball and the grip matters, but I also don’t think “soft” is necessarily good.

I don’t care for “nonmetal” insert type putters (white hot, etc…) because they feel too soft all over the face to me. My putter (solid 303 stainless #9 style) feels like butter when middled and still pretty good on my typical toe miss but definitely enough feedback to know I missed.

my Scotty NP2 insert feels extremely smooth/soft when struck out of the middle- there is no doubt when you hit it pure. When I miss heel or toe, it gets louder and feels more firm. Love the insert line he made in 2018, tons of feedback and the best feeling putter I've hit when struck perfectly.

For most putters it's all about hitting the sweet spot.  If you don't, it's going to feel firmer, but that's good because your putter is giving you feedback on how you are striking the ball anbd you can make adjustments.
The ball also has everything to do with how "soft" a putter will feel.  Go to the range / practice green and strike some putts with cheap range balls (if that's what they have), or hit some putts with something like a Bridgestone Tour B X, a Callaway Chrome Soft X (they should have named these the Chrome HARD),  or even a Titleist ProV1x.  Then hit some balls with something like a Callaway Chrome Soft or a Bridgestone Tour B RX and see how different it feels coming off the putter.

However, as far as putters themselves actually changing the way they feel, even when hitting the same golf ball................I do have some that do change and they all have a insert and it has to do with the weather.  One of my favorite gamers is my Scotty Buttonback (I also have several original TeI3 putters as well as T22's).  "Feel" is different for everybody, but to me, my Buttonback (or any of my putters with an insert) starts to feel firmer during the winters versus how soft they feel when it's hot outside during the summer.  I'm sure it's a combination of the "metal" TeI3 insert being cold as well as the ball being cold, but the "feel" that I get off the face is quite different during the winter than it is during the summer months and my distance control suffers because of it.  So, during the winter I rarely game anything with an insert and will go to a solid SS or Carbon putter instead.  Those putter heads get cold too, but for some reason I don't feel as big a difference with them during the winter as I do with a putter that has an insert.
Probably just all in my head, but it is what it is.
