2023 cobra irons in hand

Was able to test the CB and MB extensively yesterday. Felt great and the $-taper that was in them also fitted me well. I'm pondering a flow set combo of these or the Taylormade MC... and when I laid them down next to each other (MC vs CB/MB) the blade size and shape looked very similar but from the topline however the Cobras looked so much more non-forgiving. Talked to the fitter and he pointed out to me that the Cobras has more grooves that sit tighter and the lowest groove is closer to the ground while the TM MC has more space between grooves. For me the MC look noticeably more forgiving from behind the ball because of this... Numbers showed however that I could play either. Now a bit torn on the looks. Might need a couple more goes with the Cobras to get used to the slimmer look.

I really really love the look, they feel better than my 223’s I recently sold which is all subjective, but they are very soft but still feel very fast. Only mistake I made was hitting my buddies i230s (never ever been a ping guy) in his simulator and drooling over how insanely consistent they were and plan on selling the tours to fund those i230s. Nothing against the Tours but I just feel I could put my newborns baby blanket over a batch of shots.

Hit these all today, was planning on CB throughout the set. Was surprised to see minimal difference between all 3 in the line so they truly would combo well.

 

CB/MB no discernible difference in forgiveness, offset negligible difference and feel great.

 

Tour maybe a touch more forgiving but honestly just visually larger footprint more than anything. Carry was around 5 yards more due to lofts and rough more offset. 
 

All 3 irons feel amazing, wouldn’t rank one ahead of any of the others in feel. If you like a more compact head heel to toe and less offset I would go CB/MB. I would also say the tour cavity looks the least pleasing to my eye but to each their own. 
 

After hitting my order would be CB/MB combo as there is very little difference between the 2.

I tested the Tour vs the ZX7 mkii and the Tour won in ball speed and performance and forgiveness for me. 

Tours with the ZX7s, but they were very close. The difference is the ZX7s are not only cheaper for the stock option but also the modus isn’t an upcharge.

Testing my new Tours today. It’s gonna be 45-48 degrees today so it’s not gonna be a true comfortable test but excited to give them a go for the first time on real grass.

I found the MBs to be a bit less forgiving but that might also been attributed to not being a player who has hit blades before. They felt fantastic when I hit that middle but not worth it for a player of my ability.

I hit the CB 5 iron and MB 7 iron yesterday. I loved the MB look and feel and flight. The 5 iron topline kind of reminded me of a smaller version of the old Cleveland 500 CBs. I want to see the 4-6 of the MB.

Played a round with my new King Tours (5-GW). Really impressed so far. Definitely a bit more forgiving on the course as well vs my 2021 Titleist T100S set. Good turf interaction and great performance. Really happy with them and looking forward to gaming them for the rest of the season. They by no means feel any "chunkier" by the ball even though I know they are slightly bigger than the T100S (which look like blades at address). Even the Gap Wedge provides that extra confidence that I will hit a good shot. Overall a very pleased and happy customer. I am playing PX 6.0 rifle shafts in them and it's a great combination.

Looking forward to trying these out.  The Rosie story is pretty interesting if anyone had a chance to read it today.  Pretty neat how he's been tinkering back and forth and how these clubs ended up in his bag.  Good win.  Great looking club for sure.

2 weeks to the day from when I ordered them.  $ Taper, +1/2", and upright.  Pretty quick turnaround for a custom order!  Also, I can't believe I haven't tried these crossline cords before.  They feel amazing.  Will likely be changing out my MCC+4 on the rest of my clubs with these.  

 

These irons look so compact and clean.  Hardly any offset.  They're just exactly what I have been waiting for!

i230 were ultimately just not what I was looking for.  I know a lot of people have found them to be very consistent.  But, not for me.  At least off a mat.  I was seeing shots a groove or two too high (not off the forehead) lose some significant yardage.  And when buttoned, they were just longer than I want.  

 

When I hit the King CB, I found them to be much more traditional as far as distance goes.  And, more consistent if I did catch it a little high.  I could have kept the i230 and probably done well with them.  But, when I was finding these just as easy to hit and a little more consistent for my swing, it was an easy choice.  Plus it helps that the Cobra kind of have the aesthetics I love.  Compact blade and very minimal offset.

Dude Ping is killing it, I was shocked to see how good the i230 looks in person, it’s not big at all, not too much offset or anything and Ping is really winning with the spin consistency technology.

I almost went with the combo.  But, I don't know what the MB would afford me over the CB honestly.  The CB seem about as traditional as you can get.  Another thing was the sole width.  The MB seem to be significantly thinner than the CB and I didn't want them to play completely different.  I figured I can swap out the 8, 9, and PW for MB down the road if I feel like they're lacking.

Holy crap!! You ordered basically the exact set make up I would. I have loaded cobra irons into a cart 3 or 4 times now..

hahah.. I am probably going to end up with my own set by then.. The crossline cords are awesome. I prefer the Zcord but the crossline is a solid second choice if you are a cord guy.

These won't touch grass for another 2 months at least.  So, you're probably right haha.  Crossline seem to have a more aggressive texture which I like a lot.  The zcord seem to have plenty of cord in them, but the texture doesn't seem to be there.

I am glad you mentioned the sole, that's probably the thing the makes me most interested in the MB. I always get on better with irons with the thinner sole

Yeah, I think these are firmer. I have used them a fair bit. If they ever start feeling slick. Hit them with some 150 grit sand paper then wash with hot water. Instant life.

The Tours look amazing in person.  Old AP2 vibes…
 

Shorter blade length than the 921 Forged, but with a slightly wider sole that sits somewhere between the Zx5 and Zx7.  There’s some bounce there, but not quite V soles.  
 

An extremely good looking iron.
