Newport vs Newport 2

Model finishes aside, what are the differences? Seems the 2 is motor popular than the other.

The Newport is generally shorter toe to heel and has a rounder look to it. I tend to play Newport as I’m very much a feel player and like the smoothed off look. The Newport two is more angular and, according to my coach, tends to perform better for more mechanical people.

 

The fact is the two is hugely popular thanks to tiger. He won his first major with a Newport however.

Always been a NP2 fan, just prefer the look. The feel never changes, they just drain putts.

I thought the 97 Masters was a teryllium Newport 2?

A lot is going to be looks based. The Anser is going to be shorter heel to toe, softer edges, and typically slightly higher bumpers. The Anser 2 is longer heel to toe, sharper lines(the drop off behind the hosel is much more aggresive), and shallower bumpers. All of which Philly stated. Even though it is not proven there is some talk in the fitting community that people with more face rotation tend to favor the Anser 2. You could also argue that since the Anser has softer edges that people with a lot of rotation are drawn to it because rounded edges "flow" better. You can look at it from an aiming perspective as well. Do you aim the face or do you aim lines. Since the Anser 2 has sharper lines then it might be slightly easier to aim the face with that. It really boils down to which look you prefer as they both should have 40-43* of toe hang. 

 

The Newports should have a similar shape. 😉

I have both Newport and Newport 2 putters.  I prefer the standard Newport.  Probably just mental but I seem to putt better using it. The feel of both is similar so I guess it's simply the look that suits my eye. Plus the heel and toe back weights seem to resemble those on my Ping Scottsdale Anser Nickel putter that I love also.

I have both and although I prefer the look of the newport 2 better I tend to putt better with the newport. Might not be a fair comparison though as the newport is heavier. Kind of fun to switch off between the two.

I think the first Pat. No. D207277 - 1960's Ping Anser Dale Heads and the 1970's Ping Anser 2's as well as the 1990's Cameron Newports and Newport 2's are all outstanding designs, all well known and all accepted as great performing putters. 

 

I prefer the look and performance of the Anser Dale Head / Newport (009) heads.

 

I really like the addition of the sight line on the Anser / Newport style in the 1999 circa Cleveland TA Milled 1 putter as well as the feel of the 8620 soft carbon steel and the slightly heavier head of the SC Newport.

 

Love the sound of slotted Manganese Bronze Anser's..

Nothing upsets people like a Scotty. Despite the fact Toulon’s and ping PLD are just ansers (or anser copies in the case of Toulon) and more expensive than Scotty Cameron’s, they still love to hate. None of the other brands get the same hate.
 

I personally agree with you. I’ve owned multiple ansers and anser twos and they never feel as good.

I love the thicker topline of a newport and buy way too many, including 009s, but the Newport 2 works better for my mechanics. It is a hard pill to swallow. 2 has flatter elongated bumpers and looks a little more boxy.

I do like the shape of the Cameron blades the best.  Would have bought one this year if there were no bombs and had a dark finish.  Didn’t like the jet set bombs and had a jonesing for a dark finish from Cam Smith.  Ha!  Anyway I don’t know how to buy a black Cameron Newport 2 with a Titleist logo in the cavity.  Maybe there is a special way I don’t know.  Ended up buying what I wanted in an Anser 2 PLD.  Beautiful dark finish with clean styling, tri-sole and I love the feel of the graphite shaft.  Would love to buy a Titleist blade again if they clean up their styling.

Pretty much comes down to personal preference of round bumpers or square bumpers on the putter head.

 

I've always been more of a fan of round bumpers. I've rolled both the Newport and Newport 2 but couldn't get used to the square profile of the Newport 2.

The Newport 2 that I play currently suits the eye better in my opinion and gives you a little more confidence. The Newport is more round and has a shorter blade heel to toe. I would lay them both down and see what fancies your eyeballs.

Well if lead tape is not an option for you, I would say mil spec 34”/340g and sending into strip nickel coating with black oxide!

All three of my Scotties (newest about 2 years old - oldest about 10 years old) have the screw-in sole weights. Why not fiddle with them?

The newer Scotty’s definitely have that ease of adjustment.

Newport 2 is more popular because 1) Tiger, and 2) The 009M is basically the tour’s version of the newport 1, so you’ll rarely see a regular newport 1 on tv, but 009 is very popular and similar to the newport

It’s his Tour Only Newport. Pretty sure they can vary slightly in many aspects, but they all resemble a newport

I very much like the look of the Newport and that’s what I’m playing now.  But I played the Newport 2 for years.  It feels a little heavier and for me encourages a smoother stroke.  
 

re 009 I have been squinting at pictures of them and there are very subtle differences.  Size of the bumpers etc.  But you really need to look hard to see that.  They don’t drill the cherry bombs leaving the back flat for stamps.  The fact that people are willing to pay many times more than a stock Newport for these very subtle design difference certainly tells us something about the human condition.  People want something unique.  Even if only slightly.
